Dragons claim first win of 2025 as Pulse and Thunder bounce back

LexisNexis Cardiff Dragons picked up their first win of the season after powering past Birmingham Panthers 61-57 in Round 9.
Panthers held a 34-32 lead by the interval at Coventry Skydome and narrowly led the contest by a single point entering the final 15 minutes.
But Dragons kept pace with the hosts and with the scores tied at 57-57, seized control of the game through Phillipa Yarranton before Georgia Rowe put the finishing touches with the final basket of the match.
Elle McDonald stole the show with her tireless work rate across both ends of the court and was duly awarded Kissimmee Player of the Match.
Lightning make it five in a row
Loughborough Lightning took pole position in the Netball Super League with their fifth successive victory after downing NIC Leeds Rhinos 71-59.
Both teams were evenly matched up until five minutes before the break, when hosts Lightning began to pull away.
They eventually ended the third quarter with a comfortable 54-39 lead at the Sir David Wallace Arena before clinching the contest off the back of a hot shooting performance from the court, with Berri Neil and Samantha Joseph-Wallace starring throughout.
Goal attack Neil was named Kissimmee Player of the Match after tallying 12 goals and three Soft & Gentle Super Shots to help her side temporarily climb above London Pulse in the league table.
Pulse do the double over Mavericks
London Pulse returned to winning ways, and the top of the Netball Super League table, with a 63-53 win over cross-city rivals London Mavericks at OVO Wembley Arena.
The first quarter started fast and saw both teams keep pace with one another until a final-minute flurry from Pulse gave them a 17-11 lead.
The visitors extended their advantage during the second quarter, Olivia Tchine and Nichole Breedt were again deadly in front of goal and making the most of the final five minutes to claim five more Super Shots between them.
Razia Quashie did her best to keep Pulse's front two quiet and, despite their deadly finishing, the Maverick's goal keeper pulled off several good interceptions.
Kira Rothwell's introduction to proceedings helped her side keep within reach of the away side, and a series of Super Shots in the third quarter saw Mavericks only trail by six after 45 minutes of action.
Mavericks gave it their all in the final quarter but could never get closer than four goals from Pulse, who, thanks to clinical finishing from Tchine, saw out the game to win.
Thunder bounce back against Forest
Manchester Thunder's impressive performance meant they left the East Midlands with the victory as they beat Nottingham Forest Netball 72-58 at the Motorpoint Arena.
Thunder's Taylor McKevitt was one of the standout performers for the visitors as the Manchester-based side helped their chances of a play-off berth by counting back from their 65-53 loss to Loughborough Lightning last time out.
The opening 15 minutes saw both teams go after one another but Thunder went into the first interval with a slender 17-13 advantage.
The intensity of the first quarter continued in the second as both teams upped the ante going forward as 40 points were shared between the two sides, Thunder edging further in front by the end the half with the score 38-32.
Indya Masser impressed as she controlled the mid-court, providing a useful link up with Elmeré van der Berg whose proficiency with the Super Shot pushed her side out of sight.

Manchester City on brink of completing £27m move, with transfer set to break a British record
Burnley 's James Trafford is completing a move back to Manchester City for an initial £27million. The 22-year-old had been courted by Newcastle United for well over a year but has opted for a return to the Etihad Stadium, where he came through the club's academy. City sold Trafford to Burnley for an initial £14m two years ago and inserted matching rights into the deal. Arsenal star 'refusing to sign new contract' as Mikel Arteta given new transfer dilemma
Arsenal have strengthened their squad in the summer transfer window and the knock-on effects are now being felt by Mikel Arteta, with one of his squad players unsettled Leandro Trossard is stalling over signing the new contract that is being offered by Arsenal because he wants to keep his options open. Trossard has been continually linked with a move away from north London in the summer transfer window and the situation could come to a head soon. The Belgian has been with Arsenal since a move from Brighton in January 2023 and has proven to be a useful utility player for Mikel Arteta. He has contributed 28 goals and 23 assists in 124 appearances across all competitions, but his future is currently up in the air. Arsenal have been chasing new signings all summer and have brought in Viktor Gyokeres, Cristhian Mosquera, Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Christian Norgaard. But they could still sign another wide forward wanted by Arteta – and that is partly why Trossard is reluctant to show his hand yet. The Gunners are keen on a £60million deal for Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze, leaving Trossard's status in the squad unclear, with competition already there in the form of new arrival Madueke, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Ethan Nwaneri – and now potentially Max Dowman. There had been a feeling that Arsenal would entertain offers for Trossard this summer, having previously received a bid from Al-Ittihad at the end of the 2024 summer transfer window. And The Athletic says the 30-year-old won't put pen to paper on a contract that would improve his wages at Arsenal, but not extend his stay beyond 2027. Trossard's current contract is due to expire in June 2026, but Arsenal hold the option to extend it by a further 12 months. There has been interest from Turkey and Italy this summer, although nothing concrete has emerged yet. He changed agents earlier this year, leaving Josy Comhair for German-based DH Sports and Entertainment Agency. However, as Mirror Football reported, that is not understood to be over the desire to leave, but due largely to Comhair's health issues. Al-Ittihad's offer last summer was to take Trossard on an initial loan deal, with the option to make it permanent for £25m. It was only rejected because it came too late in the window, allowing Arsenal no time to find a replacement. It was suggested earlier this summer that Arsenal valued Trossard at around £17m, but he isn't in the same position as fringe players like Oleksandr Zinchenko, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Fabio Vieira and Karl Hein, who are all on the transfer list. Talks over a new contract for the forward were first raised in October, when Edu was still in charge as sporting director. But it is now Andrea Berta in charge at Arsenal and it remains to be seen how flexible he will be in the market.

Mason Mount's chances of England return given boost, as Man United star reveals phone call out of the blue from old boss Thomas Tuchel
Mason Mount 's hopes of a return to the England squad have been boosted by a call out of the blue from his old boss Thomas Tuchel. Mount played some of the best football of his career under Tuchel at Chelsea, and set up the winning goal for Kai Havertz when they won the Champions League together in 2021 with victory over Manchester City in Porto. While Tuchel told Mount in a recent video call that there are no guarantees their past success will win him an England recall after more than two-and-a-half years off the international scene, the 26-year-old Manchester United star was delighted that the Three Lions coach is keeping him in mind with next year's World Cup on the horizon and qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia coming up in early September. 'He called me and he said that he's calling a lot of players and just wanted to catch up,' Mount revealed. 'I don't know how many players he probably called, 40 or 50 maybe. But it was good to see his face, good to catch up with him and good to speak to him. 'I played quite a bit under him. We won the Champions League, so that's a positive. But I think with England it's totally different now; the competition for places, the amount of people he can pick, it's a bit different than club football. So I don't think it goes hand in hand. 'He said to me, 'there's no guarantees, even though you played for me'. But it gives you more. You want to push even more to be able to be back in the squad. So it was really good to speak to him and see what he's preparing. 'He looked very excited and had loads of energy, like I remember, and was bang up for the new role.' Mount hasn't played for England since winning the last of his 36 caps in the World Cup quarter-final defeat to France in Qatar in December 2022 when he won a late penalty that was missed by captain Harry Kane, largely due to a succession of injuries that have led to a stop-start career at United. 'Of course, as a player, you always want to play for your country and that's such a big honour,' he added. 'Any opportunity that you get to put that shirt on is amazing. I have 36 appearances for England, so I know what it means to be able to play for your country. 'I'd love to have that opportunity again but I'm focusing on club football first. So I'm looking at that first for sure and see what happens at the end of the season.'
