Manchester City on brink of completing £27m move, with transfer set to break a British record
The 22-year-old had been courted by Newcastle United for well over a year but has opted for a return to the Etihad Stadium, where he came through the club's academy.
City sold Trafford to Burnley for an initial £14m two years ago and inserted matching rights into the deal.
Once Newcastle bid for the England Under-21 international last week, City had to quickly decide whether to make their move – despite neither Ederson nor Stefan Ortega leaving so far this summer.
Trafford's switch should be finalised imminently and he is expected to provide competition for Ederson during the last year of the Brazilian's contract.
Trafford conceded only 16 goals as Burnley secured promotion back to the Premier League last term, keeping an astonishing 30 Championship clean sheets.
That equalled a 71-year EFL record, set by Port Vale, and Thomas Tuchel subsequently called him up to England's senior squad.
If add-ons are triggered then Trafford's transfer will end up north of £30m.
It will eclipse the British record for a goalkeeper set when Jordan Pickford joined Everton.

Dermot went on to ask: 'Chloe, you went through a period where you almost quit the game. Did you have enough?' In an emotional moment, Chloe admitted: 'Mentally I was in a really dark place in January and I needed to find happiness again on and off the pitch.' She continued: 'I think that it's really important to look after your mental health and football felt so far away at the time. I went on loan to Arsenal and I found such happiness coming back to London. 'It's my city where I grew up, being closer to my family and everyday stepping onto the pitch with Arsenal I felt like my smile was coming back.' Dermot, who is a proud Arsenal fan jumped in: 'I can't tell you how much that makes me feel so proud to hear that by the way and to hear the words Arsenal.' Chloe replied: 'Thank you. As the months went by I could feel myself smiling again and it's really important as human beings. 'We are footballers but we are also human beings and I think happiness is important and it allows me to be at my best on the pitch.' The star added: 'The Euros felt so far away from me in January because I just wanted to be happy so now to be a European champion is incredible so I'm really proud.'

The Hatters were relegated on goal difference from the Championship last season and were starting to show signs of progress under Matt Bloomfield at the end of the campaign. Last term's top scorer Carlton Morris has departed for Derby County, but they have recruited smartly, with highly rated goalkeeper Josh Keeley and the experienced pair of Kal Naismith and George Saville among those to arrive, along with veteran striker Nahki Wells. The 3/1 on offer for Luton to win the title looks about right but it is Stockport County who are the value picks to finish top at 9/1 and to be promoted at 11/4. Wells turned 35 in June and is probably past his best but he scored 10 goals in 39 league games in the Championship last season, so there is a chance he could excel now he drops down a division. He has reached double figures in three of the past five Championship campaigns and should spearhead the attack of a Luton team expected to score plenty of goals. At 25/1, Mothersille is another player who appeals, having joined Stockport after an impressive season at London Road. Winger Mothersille is a key creator but he also scored 12 times in League One last term for a Peterborough team who finished 18th. He should have even more attacking opportunities at Stockport and, at the age of 21, he is only going to get better.
