UK viewers can finally watch season 2 of 'compelling' Australian thriller

Metro30-06-2025
Following it's 'satisfyingly explosive' first season finale, the second season of Scrublands is now streaming in the UK.
The Australian series was based on the debut novel of the same name by journalist Chris Hammer.
The first season, which was released in 2023, follows journalist Martin Scarsden (Luke Arnold) as he investigates what he initially thinks is a straightforward story about a small town a year on from a tragedy.
But as he digs deeper to discover the details of what actually happened after a priest shot dead five parishioners, Martin faces local residents who do their best to block him from finding out about their secrets.
Running across four episodes, the series was praised by critics and viewers.
The Guardian called it a 'rock-solid addition to the rural noir genre, engaging from the start, all the way to a satisfyingly explosive finale.'
Earlier this year the four new episodes dropped in Australia. This week they were released on BBC iPlayer, with both seasons now available to binge for free.
Scrublands: Silver, which is based on Hammer's second novel of the same name, follows Martin as he tries to uncover the truth behind a crime that 'shatters his own world' when his childhood friend, Jasper, is found brutally murdered.
However, things get incredibly complicated when Martin's partner Mandy Bond (played by Bella Heathcote), then becomes the prime suspect.
It's been teased: 'As Martin races to uncover the truth and clear Mandy's name, he's forced to confront the darker side of his hometown Port Silver and the secrets lurking within his own past. Can he trust Mandy? And can he trust himself?'
The second season also stars Luke Carroll (The Artful Dodger), Debra Lawrance (Please Like Me), David Roberts (Please Like Me), Tasma Walton (The Twelve) and Luke Pegler (Hacksaw Ridge).
Speaking ahead of the release of the first season, Luke spoke about bringing the popular novel to life.
'It is about motive, history and what people are going through. There's tragedy, romance, action, it's got everything and deeper layers than your usual mystery,' he told the Daily Mail Australia.
Before the most recent season he spoke about his character being personally connected to the grisly murder.
'In the first season, Martin was the outsider; he was not too personally connected to this mystery at hand,' he told 9Entertainment. More Trending
'But in Season 2, it's Martin's past coming back to bite him. It's deeply personal.
'He wants to get to the truth because he wants the truth, not because he's gonna write in a story.'
For fans of Scrublands there's also a chance it will return for a third season – with Hammer's third novel in the trilogy, titled Trust, following Mandy's disappearance.

Coldplay's Chris Martin breaks silence after kiss cam CEO saga as he issues warning to fans

Coldplay 's Chris Martin issued fans a warning at his first concert since a kiss cam at his band's previous gig exposed a CEO and his subordinate getting cozy. The frontman, 48, gave the crowd at the Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin a heads up that they might end up featured on screens at the show. 'We'd like to say hello to some of you in the crowd,' Martin said. 'How we're going to do that is we're going to use our cameras and put some of you on the big screen.' The warning came after former Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and HR chief Kristin Cabot were caught in an embrace when a Jumbotron camera panned to them mid-song. The colleagues abruptly covered their faces, with Byron diving out of view and Cabot turning her back to the camera. But despite their efforts to avoid the limelight, their apparent awkwardness caught Martin's attention. 'Oh look at these two!' the singer said mischievously as they spun around. 'Oh what? Either they're having an affair, or they're just very shy.' The camera stayed trained on the pair, while an astonished woman stood next to them appeared to laugh uncontrollably at the uncomfortable situation. The moment at Boston's Gillette Stadium quickly went viral and prompted an internet frenzy. Public records suggest both Byron, 50, and Cabot, 56, are married - but that they live at different addresses to each of their spouses registered abodes. The controversy grew so large that Byron even stepped down from his role after Astronomer launched an investigation. The company provides generative AI software to a number of major companies including Uber, Ford and LinkedIn. In a statement announcing Byron's departure, Astronomer addressed the controversy. 'As stated previously, Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding,' it read. 'Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met. 'While awareness of our company may have changed overnight, our product and our work for our customers have not. 'We're continuing to do what we do best: helping our customers with their toughest data and AI problems.' Byron heaped praise on Cabot in a November 2024 post about her appointment to the firm. 'Kristin's exceptional leadership and deep expertise in talent management, employee engagement, and scaling people strategies will be critical as we continue our rapid trajectory,' he said. 'She is a proven leader at multiple growth-stage companies and her passion for fostering diverse, collaborative workplaces makes her a perfect fit for Astronomer.' Byron became CEO in 2023, and the startup rapidly grew under his tenure including a reported 292 per cent growth in revenue for its 'Astro' platform that year. The startup has been valued at over $1 billion, and last week Byron appeared on New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) TV to celebrate the company. He has been replaced by Peter DeJoy as interim CEO.

The Narrow Road to the Deep North on BBC One review: give this show all the awards

Present-day Dorrigo is a venerated Australian surgeon who harbours a deep resentment of the Japanese and overlooks his long-suffering wife Ella (Olivia DeJonge, played later by Heather Mitchell) in favour of sleeping with his colleagues' wives. He spends much of the series attempting to reckon with the destruction the war wrought on his psyche – as well as the destruction he's wreaking on the people around him in turn. 'I waited for you,' Ella tells him in one of the show's most crushingly poignant moments. She did; she's still paying for it.

'We're gonna use our cameras': Coldplay gives 'kiss cam' warning to concertgoers in first show since viral moment

Coldplay's Chris Martin made sure to give concertgoers a cheeky heads-up about their "kiss cam" during the band's first performance on Saturday following the viral moment that took the internet by storm last week. The concert at Wisconsin's Camp Randall Stadium was the band's first since their Boston, Massachusetts concert on Wednesday, where an embrace between Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and a blonde-haired woman was captured. Byron and the woman quickly hid when the "kiss cam" panned to them, and the moment went viral, with users claiming that he is a married man. However, NBC News has not independently confirmed this or identified the woman. In video posted to social media from Saturday's concert, Martin appears to try and steer clear of controversy by introducing the "kiss cam." "We'd like to say hello to some of you in the crowd," Martin said to cheers from the crowd. "How we're gonna do that is we're gonna use our cameras and put some of you on the big screen." Martin continued: "So please, if you haven't done your makeup, do your makeup now." He did not expressly mention Wednesday's incident. During Wednesday's performance at Gillette Stadium, a "kiss cam" was displaying couples in attendance on the screens. When it panned to one man and woman who were in an embrace, she turned around to hide her face, while the man quickly ducked out of the frame. "Oh, look at these two. You're all right," Martin said at the time, according to video footage from the concert that circulated widely online. 'You're OK. Oh, what? Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy.' The footage circulated like wildfire on the internet, and Byron was identified as the man embracing the woman. On Saturday, Byron stepped down from his role as the CEO of data company, Astronomer. Before his resignation, Byron was placed on leave from Astronomer. The New York-based company, which has under 500 employees according to its LinkedIn profile, appeared to address how the fanfare around the 'kiss cam' incident has affected its reputation in its Saturday statement. 'While awareness of our company may have changed overnight, our product and our work for our customers have not,' the company said.
