Jurassic World Rebirth review: 3/5 stars- Johansson and Ali elevate a familiar franchise

The story: Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion (2022), dinosaurs are extinct everywhere except for a narrow band around the tropics, because the zone most closely resembles the prehistoric Earth in which they once flourished. Mercenary Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) leads a team that includes fellow ex-soldier Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) and palaeontologist Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey). They have been hired to raid an island to collect biological samples from three of the largest dinosaurs. Their mission is interrupted by a distress call from a family, whose sailboat has strayed too close to the danger zone.
If the synopsis sounds familiar, that is because it was meant to be – the seventh movie in the franchise is a deliberate return to roots. And this is a welcome return, not because Jurassic World Rebirth itself is good – as nostalgia trips go, it is merely okay. But it was time for the series to shed its bloat.
In the fourth to sixth films (Jurassic World, 2015; Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, 2018; Jurassic World Dominion), dinosaurs were normalised as theme-park attractions before becoming widespread all over the world.
The creatures were sometimes the danger, but other times, an evil corporation was the baddie. The stories became a sprawling, loosely-connected set of adventures fronted by an action hero, Chris Pratt's velociraptor trainer Owen Grady, a character written to be generically likeable and therefore instantly forgettable.
Rebirth reins it all in. The reptilians are now confined to one place because of 'science'.
This set-up allows director Gareth Edwards to set up a heist movie - get in, get the goods, get out alive - with a focus on a single group. This he does extremely well, as he showed in previous character-driven action pieces that include the rebooted Godzilla (2014) and space fantasy Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016).

Where it all falls apart lies in the film's role as a corporate product that must have sequel potential.
This means that main characters wear plot armour that protects them from death or serious injury – this reduces the emotional stakes considerably.
Supporting characters with an instantly recognisable feature – an accent, or exaggerated machismo or a distinct headband - are marked for a gruesome death, a fact that becomes as clear as a face tattoo the moment they appear.
The monster attack scenes are tension-filled, but weakened considerably by questionable computer graphics and character choices that make no sense, with exhibit No. 1 being the fact that someone would take a tiny sailboat anywhere within a thousand kilometres of a dinosaur island.
As the covert operative who is the perfect yin-yang combination of toughness and empathy, Zora is made believable only by Johansson's abilities as an actress. Double Oscar winner Ali is also outstanding as her equally capable teammate; only an actor of his calibre can believably deliver dialogue about grief and heartbreak in one scene, then fight plane-sized raptors in the next.
If Rebirth does well at the box office – and there is no reason to think that it would not – viewers are set for at least two more films featuring Johansson and Ali, with Edwards directing. It would be hard to think of three people more capable of carrying the franchise.
Hot take: A competently crafted but predictably safe return to form that succeeds mainly through stellar performances, rather than genuine storytelling innovation.

Jurassic World: Rebirth was filmed at locations across three southern provinces in the country: Krabi, Phang Nga and Trang. Filming took place from Jun 13 to Jul 16, 2024, with a budget exceeding 650 million Thai baht (US$20 million), reported local newspaper The Nation. The making of the movie also involved over 500 Thai crew members and created jobs and income streams for 2,245 Thai individuals. Here are the key places you can visit to be transported right into the heart of the film: 1. HUAI TO WATERFALL AT KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK, KRABI The Khao Phanom Bencha National Park is a popular destination for its waterfalls, caves and trails through montane forests, according to the Thai National Parks website. Located in the park is Huai To Waterfall, a multi-tiered waterfall amidst the dense jungle. It is also one of the smallest parks in the country, covering around 50 sq km of area between Maung, Ao Luek and Khao Phanom districts of Krabi Province. 2. KO KRADAN, TRANG PROVINCE An island surrounded by white sandy beaches and crystal-clear water, Ko Kradan is situated to the west of Ko Muk and is the location of the Hat Chao Mai National Park Protection Unit, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand. It is also a must visit for snorkelling to see the coral reefs around its coast and a popular venue for wedding ceremonies. 3. PHANG-NGA BAY (AO PHANG NGA NATIONAL PARK), PHANG NGA Ao Phang Nga National Park is a 400 sq km marine national park that features long beaches and houses the biggest native mangrove forests in Thailand along the mainland and many islands. Its compound frames about 40 islands on the east of Phuket Island, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand. It is best known for the popular attraction, Khao Tapu, otherwise known as the James Bond Island, whose name stems from when it was used as a filming location for the 1974 Bond film The Man With the Golden Gun. There are also other limestone karst islands, a number of white sandy beaches and a few caves at the park, according to the Thai National Parks website. The turquoise waters surrounding the islands are also consistently calm, which makes it ideal for canoeing, especially to spots that are sea level caves, leading to inland lagoons. The nearest popular towns and tourist destinations are Phuket, Phi Phi Islands, Krabi, Khao Lak and Ko Lanta. 4. THAM MORAKOT (EMERALD CAVE), TRANG PROVINCE Located in the Hat Chao Mai National Park, Emerald Cave is a must visit in Thailand. From the cave mouth, tourists must float in groups passing through an 80m-long narrow tunnel. The name Emerald Cave is derived from when the sunlight reflects on the water of the cave, causing the water and the cave walls to appear emerald green. This can only be seen between 10am and 2pm. Jurassic World: Rebirth is out in cinemas from Thursday (Jul 3). To convict Combs of racketeering conspiracy, prosecutors would need to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he was part of a criminal enterprise consisting of his employees and other associates whose aim was in part to facilitate his sexual abuse and keep evidence of wrongdoing under wraps. Jurors heard testimony from Combs' former personal assistants who said their jobs included setting up hotel rooms for "Freak Offs" and buying their boss drugs. An InterContinental security guard testified that Combs, in the presence of his chief of staff, paid him $100,000 to hand over what he thought was the only copy of the surveillance tape of his attack on Ventura. And Scott Mescudi, the rapper known as Kid Cudi, told jurors Combs was likely involved in an arson on his car after Combs found out he was romantically involved with Ventura. The defense argued Combs was a successful entrepreneur who used drugs recreationally, but kept his professional and personal lives separate.
