MLB All-Star Game rosters get several replacements as Zack Wheeler and other aces bow out

New York Times9 hours ago
There were several changes to Major League Baseball's All-Star Game rosters Friday, as some prominent players decided not to participate and left spots open for others, including some first-time participants.
• Philadelphia Phillies ace Zack Wheeler, who would've been a candidate to start for the National League, will not participate Tuesday after getting named to the team for the third time. His spot went to San Diego Padres reliever Adrian Morejon, who has a 1.71 ERA in 45 appearances with two saves. The Padres are the first team to have three relievers named to an All-Star team in the same season, according to Elias Sports Bureau.
Zack Wheeler has been dropped from the NL All-Star roster. He's decided to prioritize rest and prepare for the second half, the Phillies said.

• Detroit Tigers starter Casey Mize will replace Boston Red Sox lefty Garrett Crochet, who leads the majors in strikeouts with 151. Mize has a 9-2 record with a 2.63 ERA for the team with the best record in baseball. He'll start Saturday afternoon against the Seattle Mariners, and Crochet (9-4, 2.39 ERA) is scheduled to pitch against the Tampa Bay Rays a few hours later.

• New York Yankees starter Carlos Rodón will replace his teammate Max Fried on the American League's All-Star roster. This is Rodón's third time as an All-Star, as he made the AL roster in 2021 and the NL team in 2022 during his season with the San Francisco Giants. Fried was named an All-Star in three of the past four seasons. Fried, who signed with the Yankees in December after eight seasons with the Braves, could get a chance to face his former team, as the Yankees play in Atlanta next weekend in their first series after the All-Star break.
• Mariners outfielder Randy Arozarena will also replace a teammate, as he was named to the AL roster in place of Julio Rodríguez, who will use the break to rest and prepare for the rest of the season. Arozarena started slow this season but has picked up his production in recent weeks. He went into Friday with 15 homers, 15 steals and a 133 OPS+.
• The Los Angeles Angels' only All-Star, Yusei Kikuchi, will not participate. His spot was filled by Rays starter Drew Rasmussen, who went into Friday's start in Boston with a 2.82 ERA over 89 1/3 innings.
• The Kansas City Royals had two players named as All-Stars on Friday, with Maikel Garcia replacing Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe, and AL saves co-leader Carlos Estévez getting Texas Rangers starter Jacob deGrom's spot.

Aaron Judge nominated, facing stiff ESPY competition

The post Aaron Judge nominated, facing stiff ESPY competition appeared first on ClutchPoints. Aaron Judge made MLB history with an unreal start to the 2025 season that displayed an unparalleled mix of power and batting average. The New York Yankees' All-Star right fielder is following up last year's MVP Award-winning season with another remarkable campaign. And Judge could soon add an ESPY Award to his growing list of accolades. Advertisement The 2025 ESPY nominations were announced Thursday and Judge is in the running for Best MLB Player, per He'll be competing against Los Angeles Dodgers stars Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman as well as Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. Judge is one of the most decorated players in baseball, boasting two MVP Awards, four Silver Sluggers, two Hank Aaron Awards, the Roberto Clemente Award, 2022 Player of the Year and 2017 Rookie of the Year honors. But despite all his accomplishments, he's yet to take home an ESPY Award. Will Aaron Judge finally win the ESPY for Best MLB Player? Katie Stratman-Imagn Images The Yankees captain has been nominated for the Best MLB Player ESPY three times, losing to Mike Trout in 2018 and to Ohtani in 2022 and 2023. Ohtani has dominated the ESPYs, winning Best MLB Player four years in a row. The reigning NL MVP is tied with Barry Bonds and Albert Pujols for the most wins in the category, which was first awarded in 1993. Advertisement Ohtani is following up his magical 50/50 season with another incredible year, as he returns to his two-way dominance for the Dodgers. Shohei has an MLB-best 79 runs scored and leads the National League in home runs (28), OPS (1.018), OPS+ (183) and total bases (196). Meanwhile, Judge has continued the blistering pace he established in 2024. This season he leads the majors in bWAR (5.8), hits (108), batting average (.361), on-base percentage (.461), slugging percentage (.719), OPS (1.180), OPS+ (226) and total bases (215). The Yankees veteran is tops in the American League with 70 runs scored but he's now second with 28 home runs, as Cal Raleigh continues his incredible power surge. After his historic start to the season, Judge hit a bit of a slump in June. He began the month hitting just under .400 but his average has dropped nearly 40 points over the last 23 games. Despite the lull, Judge still has a .950 OPS with 7 home runs and 13 RBI so far this month. The Yankees have also tailed off in June. The team started the month in command of the division with a 5.5 game lead. But New York has lost nine of the last 13 games, including a six-game losing streak. The Yankees are now clinging to a half-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East. A Sun Valley veteran gives a glimpse into the business world's most exclusive conference

The annual Allen & Co. Sun Valley conference took place this week. The summit brought together executives from all corners of the business world. We caught up with Flowcode CEO Tim Armstrong to discuss. For 16 summers in a row, Tim Armstrong has flown to Sun Valley, Idaho, following the July 4th holiday to attend the annual Allen & Co. Conference. The event brings together some of the most powerful and wealthiest leaders in media, technology, and finance. The longtime tech and advertising executive brokered one of the most famous deals to come out of the summit — the $4.4 billion sale of AOL to Verizon, which began over a casual lunch in 2014. Armstrong is now the CEO of Flowcode, a platform he founded that uses QR codes to fuel customer engagement. Business Insider caught up with Armstrong to discuss some of the hot topics of this year's conference, which kicked off on Tuesday. Artificial intelligence, unsurprisingly, was top of mind for attendees. It was the "1,000-pound gorilla" in "every conversation, every meeting," Armstrong said. "It used to be about media and technology, media and the internet," he said. "There's a third leg of the stool now: media, the internet, and AI." AI is being adopted at a much faster pace than the internet was, he said, and executives and investors swapped ideas about how to best implement the technology. Armstrong, for example, has enforced "TuesdAIs" at Flowcode. On Tuesdays, each department must focus on the technology by implementing new tools and updating processes to incorporate AI. It's "time to paddle out to the next wave," he said. "Paddle hard." Among the media set, sports dominated conversation. It's the "place that can still collect humans together in big audiences for live events," Armstrong said, adding that a similar takeaway had emerged from Cannes earlier this summer. The conference drew attendees from all over the sports world, including the NBA, NFL, and MLB commissioners, team owners like Robert Kraft and Jimmy Haslam, and entrepreneurs like Jeb Terry of venue operator Cosm. Armstrong ended the conference with a somewhat extreme sport of his own: bridge jumping in one of Idaho's many swimming holes. How to watch Dodgers at Giants: Shohei Ohtani set to pitch vs. NL West rival

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed that Shohei Ohtani will start Saturday's game against the Giants, with right-hander Emmet Sheehan slated to follow in bulk. Game 2 of the three-game series marks Shohei Ohtani's fifth and likely final pitching appearance before the All-Star break, and his first-ever start against the Giants as a Dodger. Righty Landen Roupp (6-5, 3.39 ERA) will take the mound for San Francisco. Advertisement Ohtani returned to the mound June 16 after missing the 2024 season following surgery to repair a UCL tear. The Dodgers have eased him in carefully, with one-inning outings to start, followed by two-inning appearances in his last two. In his most recent start, Ohtani held the Astros scoreless over two innings, surrendering one hit and fanning three. As a hitter, he went 1-for-4 and drew a walk. Through four starts, he's allowed just one run on four hits over six innings (1.50 ERA), with six strikeouts and one walk. Ohtani, who was named the starting DH for the National League in the All-Star Game, enters Saturday leading the NL with 32 home runs, breaking Cody Bellinger's previous franchise record for pre-break power. He ranks third in MLB with a .998 OPS and has swiped 12 bases. The dual-threat act hasn't skipped a beat — so much for the idea that pitching cools his bat. He's 6-for-10 across his four starts with two home runs, two triples, a double, three walks and nine RBIs, including a five-RBI outburst against Washington and multi-hit games in three of those four outings. The series opened Friday, with San Francisco handing Los Angeles its seventh straight loss. But all eyes will be on Ohtani on Saturday when he tries to get the Dodgers back to their winning ways. The series will conclude Sunday afternoon. Ticketing and streaming links in this article are provided by partners of The Athletic. Restrictions may apply.
