Labuan steps up promotion ahead of Borneo Flora Festival
Labuan Corporation (LC) chief executive officer Mohd Sukuran Taib said preparations are progressing smoothly, with promotional activities rolled out through various platforms, including face-to-face engagements, social media, printed materials, and billboards.
"For the past two months, we have stepped up promotion by distributing leaflets, putting up posters, and hanging banners.
"You can now see these materials displayed in almost every corner of the island, particularly in the town centre," he told Bernama today.
Mohd Sukuran said the Borneo Flora Festival 2025, organised by LC in collaboration with Putrajaya Corporation and the Department of Federal Territories, is expected to attract around 50,000 visitors over its five-day run from July 26 to 30 at the Labuan International Sea Sports Complex.
"We are targeting not only domestic visitors but also tourists from the Borneo region, including Kalimantan and Brunei.
This is our flagship tourism event of the year, and we are optimistic about a strong turnout," he said.
Mohd Sukuran said the festival will showcase a wide variety of flower and plant species from across the country.
"Labuan Corporation is also taking the initiative to enhance the overall beauty and ambience of the Borneo Flora Festival by planting a total of 250,000 polybags of flowering plants, as part of its broader environmental and tourism enhancement strategy," he said.
He said the Borneo Flora Festival 2025 aims to position Labuan as a key tourism hub while creating economic opportunities for local entrepreneurs and plant growers.
"This is not just about beautifying Labuan, it's about boosting the local economy, promoting sustainability, and making Labuan a must-visit eco-tourism destination," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — The Selangor government today confirmed that new water tariffs for users in the peninsula and Labuan will take effect from September 1, following Cabinet's approval of a review aimed at improving treated water services for both consumers and industry. In a statement tonight, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the revision — led by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) — includes a newly introduced tariff category for data centres, which will now be charged RM5.31 per cubic metre due to their high water usage for cooling systems. For domestic households, there will be no change in tariffs for those consuming up to 20 cubic metres (m³), with the rate remaining at RM0.65/m³ and a minimum charge of RM6.50. However, rates will increase progressively for higher usage brackets. Households using between 20m³ and 35m³ will see an increase of RM0.30/m³ to RM1.62/m³, while those exceeding 35m³ will pay RM3.51/m³ — up RM0.88/m³ — for each additional cubic metre. 'For residents of low-cost homes, the increase will be minimal — just RM0.10/m³, bringing the new rate to RM1.18/m³, to minimise the cost of living impact, ' Amirudin said. Tariffs for condominiums and government quarters will also be revised, with the minimum charge for flats remaining at RM173/month, while estates and government quarters will pay RM20.90/month. For commercial and non-domestic users, the new rate will match the highest domestic tier at RM3.51/m³, with those consuming above 35m³ facing a further increase to RM3.83/m³. Places of worship and welfare institutions will continue to enjoy the lowest rate, with a marginal increase to RM0.76/m³. Amirudin also announced that the Selangor government would absorb the annual RM100,000 cost increase for places of worship and welfare institutions and expand its free water scheme to cover more lower-income households. 'More than 1.3 million Selangorians will continue receiving 20m³ of water for free monthly through the Darul Ehsan Water Scheme (SADE). The qualifying monthly household income threshold will be raised from RM5,000 to RM6,000 to reach more people, ' he said. To apply for the scheme, eligible residents can visit Air Selangor's official site beginning August 8. The state government will allocate RM52.7 million annually to support this initiative, Amirudin added, saying it reflects Selangor's commitment to balancing affordability with sustainable infrastructure investment. Among key improvements cited were the replacement of over 730km of old pipes since 2018, a reduction in non-revenue water losses from 27.7 per cent to 27.3 per cent, and a rise in reserve margins to 16.74 per cent as of June 2025. Selangor also plans to accelerate its pipe replacement rate to 300km per year and build two new water treatment plants — Rasau and Labohan Dagang 2 — at a combined cost of over RM8 billion, which will add 2,730 million litres per day to supply. 'These steps are crucial as the state targets a 20 per cent water reserve margin by 2030, ' said Amirudin.

(Reuters pic) PETALING JAYA : Electricity supply in Sabah and Labuan will be rationed from Aug 1 to 7 for scheduled maintenance at Petronas's Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal. About 200,000 account holders will experience rotational outages lasting one to two hours, reported The Borneo Post. Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd's (SESB) CEO, Yaakob Jaafar, said Petronas had informed SESB and the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS ) in advance about the maintenance, and preparations had been made to avoid rationing. However, two major power plants which are key contributors to Sabah's power generation – the Kimanis IPP power plant and the SPRE power plant – will not be able to operate using diesel during the shutdown. 'As a result, Sabah will lose 195MW from its power grid,' said Yaakob at a press conference in Kota Kinabalu. He said SESB is coordinating with the independent power producers, ECoS and other stakeholders to monitor the situation and reduce disruption as much as possible. Updates on affected areas and outage schedules will be available on SESB's Facebook page and mobile app.

Borneo Flora Festival 2025 draws 104,543 visitors, boosts eco-tourism
LABUAN: The Borneo Flora Festival (BFF) 2025 surpassed all expectations by attracting 104,543 visitors, more than double its initial target of 50,000. The five-day event drew plant enthusiasts and tourists from across Malaysia, Brunei, Kalimantan, and even Timor Leste. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, said the overwhelming response underscores Labuan's rising profile as a hub for eco-tourism and cultural events. 'The response was beyond our expectations. This shows how the Borneo Flora Festival has grown into a regional event of international interest,' she said during the closing ceremony. The festival celebrated Borneo's rich biodiversity, featuring rare orchids, giant pitcher plants, and exotic rainforest blooms. Over 100 exhibitors, including local growers, NGOs, and hoteliers, participated. Activities ranged from floral workshops to conservation-themed competitions, engaging visitors of all ages. Dr Zaliha highlighted the festival's economic benefits, noting a surge in business for hotels, restaurants, and homestays. 'This festival has not only beautified Labuan with nature's finest but also stimulated our economy,' she said. Many homeowners even offered temporary homestays to meet accommodation demand. Adding royal prestige, Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofia, the Queen of Malaysia, visited the event.
