Appointment of Labuan Corporation chairman in final stages, says Dr Zaliha

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is not deliberately delaying the appointment of the new Labuan Corporation chairman, as thorough scrutiny is needed to ensure the best candidate is selected. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, said the matter is in its final stages and will be announced soon. "We are reviewing qualified candidates and, most importantly, ensuring the next chairman truly understands Labuan's current needs and is capable of driving sustainable economic growth. "We are not deliberately delaying the appointment, and there's no need to rush to make a decision, as it is not just about simply filling the post — we must look at the merit of the (future) chairman. "Just a little more patience, as it is already in the final stage. We will make an official announcement on the matter," she said during the Minister's Question Time (MQT) session in the Dewan Rakyat today. She was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Siti Aminah Aching (BN–Beaufort), who asked about the reasons behind the delay in appointing the Labuan Corporation chairman. Previously, Dr Zaliha dismissed rumours that Tuaran Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau, had been appointed as the new chairman of Labuan Corporation. She said the federal government, through the Department of Federal Territories, is still in the process of evaluating several qualified candidates for the leadership role. The post of Labuan Corporation chairman became vacant following former Kimanis MP Tan Sri Anifah Aman concluding his term last month. Meanwhile, regarding the proposal to make the Labuan International Sea Sports Complex the permanent venue for the Borneo Flora Festival, Dr Zaliha said: "The government is of the view that further assessment is still needed to evaluate its long-term suitability in terms of logistics, accessibility and infrastructure sustainability. "For example, the Royal Floria Putrajaya only designated Precinct 4 as its permanent location after seven years of organisation, having taken into account various success factors and challenges. "Given that the Borneo Flora Festival is proposed as a biennial event, the decision on a permanent venue should be made after several editions to ensure it truly meets the requirements for hosting large-scale events on a continuous basis."

A wide variety of vibrant plants is being meticulously arranged at strategic locations, including the main venue at the Labuan International Sea Sports Complex, the Financial Park Complex, major roundabouts, public parks, and key gateways, such as Labuan Airport and ferry terminals. Labuan Corporation chief executive officer, Mohd Sukuran Taib, said that the initiative aims to transform Labuan into a 'living garden', reflecting this year's festival theme of celebrating biodiversity, conservation and community creativity. The Borneo Flora Festival 2025, organised by Putrajaya Corporation in collaboration with Labuan Corporation, the Federal Territories Department, and Kuala Lumpur City Hall, will officially kick off on July 26. Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, is scheduled to grace the opening ceremony at the Labuan International Sea Sports Complex. This year's festival will feature more than 29 themed gardens, showcasing exotic and endangered flora native to Borneo, alongside contemporary landscape designs presented by local councils, private sector players, and community groups. 'The five-day event will include plant exhibitions, soft and hard landscape gardens, eco-talks, art installations, live performances by Malaysian artists, and family-friendly activities designed to raise environmental awareness and promote sustainable living,' Mohd Sukuran said. He added that the polybag planting strategy was adopted not only to enhance aesthetics, but also to allow for flexible, controlled growth and easier relocation, as the final designs take shape. 'Each phase of planting has been meticulously planned to ensure that the flowers are in full bloom when the festival begins. The strategic placement of 250,000 flowering plants across the island is part of our broader effort to infuse Labuan with the vibrant spirit of the festival,' he said. He said that the massive undertaking involves close coordination between municipal landscape teams, horticulturists, and local volunteers. The Borneo Flora Festival is expected to draw thousands of visitors, both domestic and international, including tourists from neighbouring Kalimantan and Brunei, boosted by an aggressive promotional campaign and improved ferry connectivity to Kota Kinabalu and beyond. With hotel rooms, homestays, and serviced apartments still available, organisers are encouraging visitors to plan ahead and experience what promises to be Labuan's most colourful and eco-conscious celebration yet. – Bernama

A spokesperson from Putrajaya Corporation said the plants, sourced from various parts of Peninsular Malaysia, are intended to enrich the diversity of floral displays and attract visitors with their unique beauty and variety. The plants were transported in four special sorties by the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), from the Subang Air Base to the Labuan Air Base, on July 11. The deliveries were carried out in phases, with the first batch arriving last week, followed by the second batch, which landed at approximately 10am Saturday. The RMAF also delivered numerous equipment and support materials needed for the festival's preparations. The five-day festival will be held from July 26 to 30 at the Labuan International Sea Sports Complex and is expected to draw visitors from across the region. Water Department slammed for Labuan water crisis

Published on: Thursday, July 10, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 10, 2025 Text Size: The empty water cistern in Wong's house. LABUAN: The Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce (LCCC) has criticised the Water Department (JBA) for its continued failure to resolve the island's worsening water crisis, calling its response slow and inadequate. Its President, Datuk Wong Kii Yii, said he was personally affected after his home was left without water for several days, and despite repeated calls to JBA, no water delivery was made. 'My family, along with other residents nearby, had no access to clean water. I contacted JBA several times asking for a water tanker to be sent, but there was no prompt response,' he said in a statement on Wednesday. He said it was only after contacting the Chief Executive Officer of Labuan Corporation (Perbadanan Labuan), Sukuran Taib, that a water delivery was arranged using a PL tanker. He commended the swift action by Sukuran and his team. Wong called on JBA to be more responsive to public complaints and act quickly to assist residents in need of water, especially during prolonged supply disruptions. He also criticised the Public Works Department (JKR) and JBA for failing to properly cover up a road section near his house, where pipe repair works had been carried out, causing inconvenience to road users. Wong urged the Government to take serious and immediate action to address the worsening water situation in Labuan, stressing that it is affecting daily life and investor confidence. 'The Government has grand plans for Labuan's development under the Federal Territories Department (JWP), including programmes like the Borneo Flora Festival, but the people are suffering from basic shortages. Even the flowers at the event get watered daily, but not the people,' he said. He said he has hesitated to bring potential investors and tourists to Labuan due to the unresolved water issues and warned that it may affect the island's image and economic prospects. Wong reiterated his call for the government and related agencies to stop ignoring the needs of the people and prioritise essential services like water supply. 'Don't let the people of Labuan continue to suffer. JBA must respond to water supply complaints quickly, especially for rural residents,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
