Cellar-dwelling Galaxy take aim at rival LAFC
Los Angeles FC will get what has traditionally been one of their tougher tests of the season when they play host to the rival Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday.
The Galaxy might be in the middle of one of the worst seasons in franchise history. However, even amid a historic winless streak to open the season, they still managed to forge a 2-2 tie when they met LAFC at home on May 18.
That draw came as the defending MLS champion Galaxy were on a run of 16 consecutive matches without a victory, the longest to start a season in MLS history.
The Galaxy (3-14-5, 15 points) are 3-2-2 since earning their first win of the season on May 31. They moved out of last place briefly but are back in the basement after a 2-1 home loss to Austin FC on Wednesday.
Joseph Paintsil scored the lone goal for the Galaxy, his fourth of the season to put him in a tie for second-most on the team behind Marco Reus (five goals, seven assists).
'Hopefully, (the defeat) is a reminder again that you can't go to LAFC and be in the middle ground intensity-wise,' Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney said. 'You've got to show up with maximum intensity. Everybody knows that and looks forward to this game. They know what's at stake.'
LAFC (10-5-5, 35 points) went 0-2-1 at the Club World Cup and did not advance out of group play but are 3-1-0 since. They earned a 1-0 victory on the road against Minnesota United on Wednesday.
Denis Bouanga scored on a penalty kick late in the first half for his team-leading 11th goal of the season. He also has seven assists.
'(Bouanga) can beat you with physicality, he can beat you with technique, on the dribble or as a pure finisher,' LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo said. 'For attackers, the season is always up and down, but we try to see the work in between, and for me, it has been very consistent over the past three years.'
Playing without defender Aaron Long, who ruptured his left Achilles tendon last week and is done for the season, LAFC still managed to extend their scoreless streak to 340 minutes, going back to a June 29 loss against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Tigers continue slide in blowout loss to Blue Jays
(Photo credit: Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images) Ernie Clement drove in four runs, including a three-run homer during a five-run, sixth-inning outburst, and the visiting Toronto Blue Jays blasted the slumping Detroit Tigers,11-4, on Thursday night. Nathan Lukes had a double and two-run homer in the opener of a four-game series between the division leaders. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. supplied three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs. Addison Barger also drove in two runs, while Joey Loperfido added a solo homer. Eric Lauer (6-2) limited the Tigers to one run and five hits with six strikeouts in eight innings as Toronto won for the sixth time in seven games since the All-Star break. Jahmai Jones and Spencer Torkelson homered for the Tigers, who have lost 10 of their last 11 games. Detroit starter Reese Olson (4-4) was charged with five runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings. Jones, the second batter in Detroit's order, gave the Tigers an early lead with his homer. He smacked a Lauer fastball over the left-center field wall. Lauer settled in from that point. Olson was cruising along as well, allowing just three baserunners in the first five innings, none of whom got past first base. Everything changed in the sixth. George Springer drew a one-out walk and Guerrero lashed an Olson changeup to left for a double, scoring Springer. Following a groundout, Barger was given an intentional walk. That strategy backfired, as Clement jumped on a hanging slider and drove it over the left-center field wall. Loperfido made it 5-1 four pitches later when he yanked a changeup over the right field onslaught continued in the seventh against Dietrich Enns. Lukes led off with a double and scored on Guerrero's one-out single. After Bo Bichette reached on an infield hit, Barger ripped a triple to right to bring in two runs. Barger then scored on a Clement sacrifice fly to make it 9-1. Lukes blasted his homer in the eighth off Geoff Hartlieb, who was elevated from Triple-A Toledo earlier in the day.

MLS commissioner says Whitecaps ‘need' viable stadium as talks continue for PNE site
The future home of the Vancouver Whitecaps is once again under the spotlight, following comments from Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber. Speaking Wednesday, Garber addressed speculation about the club's future following its December announcement that the franchise is for sale. 'We have no plans to move the Vancouver Whitecaps,' said Garber. 'But right now they don't have a viable stadium situation and they need one.' Why BC Place is under scrutiny BC Place has hosted the Whitecaps since late 2011, following the team's inaugural MLS season at the temporary Empire Field. The 42-year-old venue has faced mounting criticism from fans and league officials. Issues include its artificial turf, the cavernous match-day atmosphere, and scheduling conflicts that last season forced the Whitecaps to play a home playoff match in Portland. Garber also raised concerns about limited access to BC Place during renovations leading up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. 'We have a stadium that we will lose access to because of construction for the 2026 World Cup,' he said. 'We get 17 days where we can play our games and that's it.' Talks underway for PNE stadium In April, the Whitecaps confirmed they are in discussions with the City of Vancouver about building a new soccer-specific stadium at the PNE fairgrounds in East Vancouver. In a statement to CTV News Thursday, the club confirmed those talks are 'progressing.' 'While the club is taking all necessary action to keep moving this process forward, it is a complex undertaking that can take considerable time,' the team said. 'Our objective is to continue to move the project forward as quickly as possible, working with the city, the province, and MLS. At this time, the club has no further updates to share on these conversations with the city.' City and province signal support Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim also responded Wednesday, stressing the team's importance to the city. 'The Vancouver Whitecaps are an integral part of our city's sport and cultural identity and we are encouraged by the commissioner's comments that there is no intention to move the team out of Vancouver,' Sim said in a statement. 'The club's ownership has always been clear on their goal of constructing a purpose-built stadium since Vancouver was awarded an MLS franchise back in 2009. While we cannot disclose specific information regarding potential land-use matters, we are continuing to explore ways to ensure the Whitecaps can remain in Vancouver for generations to come.' The B.C. government has also indicated it may get involved to help overcome potential land and legislative challenges. 'There may be land restrictions, there may be issues where they need the province to make some tweaks to legislation – those are the things that we're waiting on the City of Vancouver and the Whitecaps to get back to us on,' said Ravi Kahlon, B.C.'s Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth. Long-term uncertainty While BC Place will remain the team's home for now, long-term uncertainty lingers as ownership works toward securing a new facility and potential buyers assess the franchise. Blake Price, host of the Sekeres & Price podcast, said the road to a new stadium won't be easy. 'The number of owners that can foot this bill, those don't grow on trees,' said Price. 'It's a lot of money to lay out for a new stadium. It's equally hard to get public money to help finance that new stadium.' CTV News has reached out to the Whitecaps for additional comment.

Adam Svensson fires 60 to set course record at 3M Open
(Photo credit: Jim Cowsert-Imagn Images) Canada's Adam Svensson took advantage of ideal scoring conditions Thursday morning to shoot a course-record 60 at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minn. Svensson reached the par-5 18th hole in two shots and had two putts to break the course record. He only needed one. Svensson's eagle attempt from just over 48 feet hit the flagstick and dropped for an eagle, finishing an 11 under round of 60 with matching 30s on both nines. He now holds the course record by two shots over Scott Piercy's 62 in the first round of 2019 and Sam Stevens' round that was completed just a few groups ahead of Svensson on Thursday. Stevens was on 59 watch when he reached 10 under through 16 holes. He narrowly missed a birdie putt on the 17th hole and then put his approach on 18 in the water. Stevens had to settle for a 62 after closing with a bogey. 'I had a good drive and I probably made the decision trying to shoot 59 because I was in between -- I have a pretty big gap between my 3-iron and my 3-wood, and I hit a terrible shot,' Stevens said. 'But I thought if I hit a 3-wood, it was just going to fly to the back of the green, and I kind of had to hit a 3-iron perfect to even cover the water. But I figured that was my best chance to shoot 59, so I gave it a go. 'Didn't hit a good shot, but made a nice up-and-down for 6, so I guess that's a positive. Yeah, not the best way to finish the round, but gave it a crack.' With minimal wind and players able to play their balls up in the fairway due to heavy recent rains, scoring conditions were ideal. 'It's a great course but it's pretty straightforward, not a whole lot of adjustments, just sort of point and shoot and make as many birdies as you can,' Stevens said. Not long after Stevens completed his round, Svensson stole the thunder with his eagle putt, completing a bogey-free round that included nine birdies. It was a round few would have predicted. Svensson, who won the 2022 RSM Classic, has plummeted to 234th in the Official World Golf Ranking while missing 11 of his first 20 cuts in 2025. That includes his two most recent starts entering this week and four of his past five. Svensson's best finish thus far in 2025 was a tie for 24th at the Corales Puntacana Championship.
