Ernie Clement drove in four runs, including a three-run homer during a five-run, sixth-inning outburst, and the visiting Toronto Blue Jays blasted the slumping Detroit Tigers,11-4, on Thursday night.
Nathan Lukes had a double and two-run homer in the opener of a four-game series between the division leaders.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. supplied three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs. Addison Barger also drove in two runs, while Joey Loperfido added a solo homer.
Eric Lauer (6-2) limited the Tigers to one run and five hits with six strikeouts in eight innings as Toronto won for the sixth time in seven games since the All-Star break.
Jahmai Jones and Spencer Torkelson homered for the Tigers, who have lost 10 of their last 11 games. Detroit starter Reese Olson (4-4) was charged with five runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Jones, the second batter in Detroit's order, gave the Tigers an early lead with his homer. He smacked a Lauer fastball over the left-center field wall.
Lauer settled in from that point. Olson was cruising along as well, allowing just three baserunners in the first five innings, none of whom got past first base.
Everything changed in the sixth. George Springer drew a one-out walk and Guerrero lashed an Olson changeup to left for a double, scoring Springer. Following a groundout, Barger was given an intentional walk.
That strategy backfired, as Clement jumped on a hanging slider and drove it over the left-center field wall. Loperfido made it 5-1 four pitches later when he yanked a changeup over the right field wall.Toronto's onslaught continued in the seventh against Dietrich Enns. Lukes led off with a double and scored on Guerrero's one-out single. After Bo Bichette reached on an infield hit, Barger ripped a triple to right to bring in two runs. Barger then scored on a Clement sacrifice fly to make it 9-1.
Lukes blasted his homer in the eighth off Geoff Hartlieb, who was elevated from Triple-A Toledo earlier in the day.

Tovar's homer in 8th inning propels Rockies past Orioles 6-5 for Colorado's 5th win in 7 games

BALTIMORE (AP) — Ezequiel Tovar hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the top of the eighth inning, and the Colorado Rockies beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-5 on Friday night to improve to 5-2 since the All-Star break. It's a rare run of success for the Rockies, who improved to 27-76 on the season but still need 15 wins to avoid matching the modern record of 121 losses by last year's Chicago White Sox. Colorado rallied from a 4-0 deficit after Jordan Westburg, Tyler O'Neill, Coby Mayo and Alex Jackson hit solo homers for Baltimore in the first two innings. Mickey Moniak hit a solo shot in the third for the Rockies and Thairo Estrada added a two-run homer in the fourth. Colorado took the lead in the fifth when Hunter Goodman hit an RBI double and then scored on Jordan Beck's single. Jackson Holliday tied it for the Orioles with an RBI single in the seventh off Rockies reliever Jake Bird (4-1). Tovar answered with a one-out drive off Andrew Kittredge (1-2), and the Rockies held on. Seth Halvorsen worked a perfect ninth for his 10th save in 13 chances. Colorado and Baltimore — both in last place in their respective divisions — traded players to New York before the game. The Rockies sent infielder Ryan McMahon to the Yankees, and the Orioles dealt reliever Gregory Soto to the Mets. Key moment O'Neill led off the eighth with a double, but Tyler Kinley retired the next three hitters — two via strikeout — to protect the one-run lead. Up next Trevor Rogers (3-1, 1.74 ERA) starts for the Orioles on Saturday night against Colorado's Antonio Senzatela (4-13, 6.41). ___ AP MLB:

In latest bat flip flap, big league players side with Little Leaguer

NEW YORK (AP) — Jazz Chisholm Jr., known for playing with flair, noticed when a Little Leaguer was suspended in baseball's latest bat flip flap. 'I thought that was ridiculous. You're going suspend a kid for having fun?' the New York Yankees All-Star infielder said Friday. 'Crazy.' Marco Rocco, a 12-year-old from Haddonfield, New Jersey, tossed his bat in the air on July 16 after his sixth-inning, two-run homer in the final of the sectional tournament for Haddonfield's under-12 team against Harrison Township on July 16. His father went to court and got the suspension eliminated. 'If it's a game-changing homer, it's fine. Even when I'm on the mound, it doesn't irk me. It's a human reaction and it's good for the game, just like a pitcher doing a fist pump after a big strikeout,' said Toronto pitcher Max Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner. 'I side-eye someone if they hit a solo shot and their team is down 5-0. That doesn't jive with me. I don't like it when opponents or teammates do that. I feel the same way about Little Leaguers.' Rocco was ejected for what his family was told were actions deemed 'unsportsmanlike' and 'horseplay,' and an ejection results in an automatic one-game suspension. His father, Joe, is a lawyer and his dad filed suit. Judge Robert G. Malestein of New Jersey Superior Court ruled in favor of the Roccos, and Marco played for Haddonfield against Elmora Little League in a 10-0 loss Thursday in the opener of a four-team, double-elimination tournament at the Deptford Township Little League complex. Marco went 0 for 2 with two strikeouts. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. 'I wish nobody would do a bat flip. I'm kind of traditional,' Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson said before adding, 'But let him play.' A staid sport for much of the 19th and 20th centuries, baseball has embraced emotion in recent years. José Bautista's bat flip against Texas in a 2015 AL Division Series was featured in the video game MLB The Show 16. 'It's a kid's game, Whether you're a kid or a major leaguer, we're in a have-fun era,' Detroit catcher Jake Rogers said. 'If you earn that moment, you earn that moment.' ___ AP Sports Writer Larry Lage contributed to this report.

Busy weekend expected for Windsor-Detroit Tunnel

A busy weekend is expected at the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel. Tunnel CEO Tal Czudner said whenever the Toronto Blue Jays are in Detroit, it's the busiest weekend for the tunnel. He said traffic at the tunnel is expected to pick up at least two hours before game time. 'Now you have two division leaders so that even ramps up the interest and the volume. The politics aside, this is one of those things where your loyalty to the Tigers and the Jays will push you across the border and the busiest time, it starts to pick up approximately two hours before game time,' said Czudner. Czudner said both sides of the border are aware it's a busy weekend. 'Our friends at CBSA and CBP, they're all aware of the fact that this is a busy weekend and they're going to do what they can to try and get more booths open, but we're still an international border crossing so there might be an enhanced level of security that does go up or down depending on what is happening,' said Czudner. 'So instead of three questions, you might be asked five questions when you're going through.' He recommends having your documents ready, 'You want to get through as quick as you can. So get a Nexpress card, throw that in your window so that you pay toll quicker, then make sure you have your Nexus card or your passport ready when you're entering customs just so that way you can speed up the process. Thirty seconds for every person adds up to a big difference.' Czudner said if you're going to the game Friday, you should be at the tunnel by 4:30 p.m. to beat the tunnel traffic. He said if you're heading to the game on Saturday, be at the tunnel by 4 p.m., and for Sunday's game, be at the tunnel by 11:30 a.m. Czudner said after those times, the tunnel will start to back up. The Blue Jays and Tigers kicked off a four-game set on Thursday, with the Jays picking up the win. — Rob Hindi, AM800 News
