Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta
on Sunday said it is actively engaging with students and taking necessary steps to address their concerns in the wake of the alleged
sexual assault
of a woman on its campus.
The woman was allegedly raped by a student of
IIM-Calcutta
inside a hostel on the campus, police had said on Saturday.
The accused student was arrested on Saturday on the basis of an FIR lodged by the woman, he said. A court here has remanded the student to police custody till July 19.

The IIM-Calcutta, however, declined to share details of the measures being undertaken, citing sensitivity of the matter and ongoing legal proceedings.
"We are constantly engaging with our students internally to ensure their safety and well-being. I have instructed my team to do everything necessary to address the situation. This is my clear directive," Director-in-Charge

told PTI.

He said the IIM-Calcutta campus is co-educational and the recent developments have led to some apprehension among parents, which he termed as "natural" given that the institute has never faced such a situation in the past.
"I cannot speak in detail about what we are doing. We will not share with the media anything more than what we have already said in our statement on Saturday, as this matter is both sensitive and sub judice," Chattopadhyay added.
In its statement issued on Saturday,
IIM Calcutta
had said: "We are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and are fully cooperating with the law enforcement authorities, who are currently conducting an investigation. The concerned individual has been taken into police custody, and the legal process is underway."
The institute is committed to ensuring that due process is followed while safeguarding the dignity, safety, and privacy of all individuals involved, it had said.
"We wish to affirm that the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta has zero tolerance for such incidents and remains steadfast in upholding a safe and respectful campus environment," the statement added.
Police have constituted a nine-member
special investigation team
(SIT) to probe into the alleged incident.
The woman's father, however, has claimed that the reported incident did not take place.

Last week, NIA arrested the three for allegedly aiding Naseer and others in different capacities. While Nagaraj is accused of supplying mobile phones and sim cards to Naseer and others, Pasha is charged with providing police security to Naseer and others in prison while the latter carried out terror activities. The third accused, Fathima, was arrested for allegedly providing monetary help and other assistance to the inmates. "Fathima was rushed to hospital Sunday after claiming to have consumed toilet cleaner. Doctors washed her stomach and found no traces of the cleaner. However, there were some traces of the toilet cleaner in her mouth," sources said.

Bank officer held for 27L fraud
Lucknow: The economic offences wing (EOW) of the UP Police on Monday arrested Chheda Lal Anuragi, former bank officer, accused of orchestrating Rs 27 lakh fraud by opening fake accounts in collusion with bank staff and others. He was arrested in Agra where he was posted as branch manager at Indian Bank, Holipura. EOW said that the case dates back to 2006, when Anuragi served as retail banking officer at the Allahabad Bank branch in Atarra, Banda. He along with other officials allegedly opened two fraudulent accounts using forged documents and IDs. Similar fake accounts were opened in Union Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Central Bank of India and Bank of Baroda. Using these fake accounts, chequebooks were issued and account payee cheques were deposited at Allahabad Bank's Atarra branch. Courier stafffalsely cleared these cheques, allowing payment of large sums. Investigations revealed that the original accounts held only nominal balances (as little as Rs 1,000–2,000), yet multiple high-value cheques were cleared. BSP neta's daughter, youth found dead in Ayodhya hotel
Ayodhya: In a suspected case of murder-suicide, daughter of a Bahujan Samaj Party functionary was shot dead by her 22-year-old 'friend', who then turned the weapon on himself. Their bodies were found in a locked room at a homestay near Devkali bypass in Ayodhya on Sunday evening. The woman was identified as Aroma Rawat and the youth as Ayush Kumar Gupta. Police said the duo had checked into the homestay around 10:10am on Sunday and was allotted room number 103 on the second floor. Around 5pm, a waiter knocked at their door to deliver tea, but received no response. The homestay owner alerted police. A team led by circle officer, Ayodhya, Ashutosh Tiwari, arrived and broke open the door. Both the victims were lying on the bed with gunshot wounds on their foreheads. A pistol was found near Ayush's leg with two cartridges on the floor. Forensic experts and SP (city) Chakrapani Tripathi also reached the spot on receiving the news, and collected evidence. Police ruled out the possibility of third-party involvement, as the room was locked from inside. Aroma was the daughter of Barabanki BSP district president KK Rawat and was a nursing student in Ayodhya.
