Harbhajan Singh lambasts Mahela Jayawardene's actions during MI vs PBKS, IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 match.
New Delhi: On June 2, in the second qualifier for the IPL in 2025, the Mumbai Indians lost to the Punjab Kings. Setting a tough target of 204 runs, the five-time champions could not win, so the Punjab Kings qualified for the final instead.
Mumbai Indians' bowlers secured two early wickets, but were unable to curb Punjab Kings' aggressive scoring. Jasprit Bumrah, despite high expectations, had an ineffective performance, conceding 40 runs without taking a wicket.
Mumbai Indians' difficulties in their second innings led to head coach Mahela Jayawardene taking a more active role, frequently providing on-field guidance to his players.
Harbhajan Singh criticized Mumbai Indians' coaching staff after expressing disapproval of Jayawardene's behavior. 'Look at the Mumbai Indians dugout. When they were leaking runs, there was too much involvement from the outside,' said Harbhajan on his official YouTube channel.
'The coaches are telling a bowler like Jasprit Bumrah what to do and what not. A dressing room needs to remain calm and composed. Coaches should only give advice. Don't show desperation. So somewhere I felt that when this happens way too much, it breaks the player's spirit,' he added.
Harbhajan Singh, a former Mumbai Indians captain, played for the team from 2008 to 2017. His final season with the franchise coincided with Jayawardene's tenure.
Mumbai Indians (MI) showed significant improvement after a slow start to the IPL season, ultimately securing fourth place with eight wins from fourteen matches. Their victory over the Gujarat Titans in the eliminator secured a spot in the second qualifier, however, they were unable to advance to the final for the fifth consecutive year.

Meet Anshul Kamboj - Haryana pacer who took 10 wickets in an innings in Ranji Trophy, makes India debut in Manchester

Haryana pacer Anshul Kamboj was handed his India Test debut on Wednesday against England in the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester. Kamboj, who was a part of the India A squad during their tour of England last month, was a late addition to the senior side after the visiting side were hit by a couple of injuries. Kamboj's debut comes in after pacer Arshdeep Singh was ruled out of the fourth Test due to an injury he suffered on his bowling hand at nets. India also made another two changes - Shardul Thakur and Sai Sudharsan replacing of Nitish Kumar Reddy and Karun Nair. Kamboj thus became the second Indian player to be handed his debut in the ongoing Test series. Sudharsan was handed his Test debut in the first Test in Leeds which India lost by five wickets. Born in Karnal, Kamboj made his first class debut for Haryana in 2022. The young pacer came into limelight when he took 17 wickets in 10 matches in their triumphant Vijay Hazare campaign in 2023. Kamboj's ability to exploit the subtle movement caught the eyes of IPL scouts and was signed by Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). With very little chances at Mumbai Indians, Kamboj got traded to Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025. He played eight matches for his eight wickets at an economy of exactly 8. His moment of magic came in November last year when he became just the third pacer in Ranji Trophy to take all 10 wickets in an innings against Kerala. For hi 10 wickets, Kamboj bowled 30.1 overs, including nine maidens and conceded 49 runs. For India A against England Lions, Kamboj played two games and picked up three wickets. But the highlight of Kamboj's stay in the United Kingdom was the 51 not out in the second game in Northampton in the second innings in a drawn encounter.

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma's 2027 World Cup Dream Difficult, Ex-India Star Gives MS Dhoni's Example

India stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli bowed out of T20I cricket after guiding the team to the T20 World Cup title in 2024. That trophy ended India's 11-year-old ICC title drought. Later, the duo also called time on their respective Test careers in May this year, leaving the fans heartbroken. However, both the players are still active in the ODIs and aim to play the ODI World Cup in 2027 and help India clinch the trophy. However, former India spinner Harbhajan Singh feels that it will be quite difficult for them to play in the prestigious ICC tournament. Harbhajan stated that after retiring from two formats, it becomes difficult to maintain a good performance, especially for a tournament like World Cup. "It's too far, actually. It's been a very long time, and they are not playing any other formats. It becomes very difficult for anyone, no matter how much commitment you have or how big a great you are," Harbhajan said on his YouTube channel. "If you do not play the game continuously, somewhere the game moves ahead and you are left behind," he added. He went on to give an example of former India skipper MS Dhoni, who did not feature in international cricket after India's exit from the 2019 World Cup. Harbhajan called out Dhoni for his batting struggles in the IPL. "It will be hard. We have seen MS Dhoni playing in the IPL. Look at his performance in the last three years," he said. You see the difference between this Dhoni and the Dhoni from six years ago when he was playing for India consistently," Harbhajan added. Earlier, former BCCI selector Jatin Paranjpe revealed a conversation with Rohit Sharma, where the latter had expressed his desire of playing Test cricket for India. "I remember he was not playing Test cricket for India. And we had this conversation, and he said, 'I started playing cricket with a red ball, Jatin. How can you say that I am not interested in Test cricket?' I got the message, and I was hoping that that was what he would say," Paranjpe said on 'A Century of Stories' podcast with Cyrus Broacha.

MI Cape Town Announces Retained Players Ahead of New SA20 Season

Last Updated: MI Cape Town, 2025 SA20 champions, retained six key players for 2026: Ryan Rickelton, George Linde, Corbin Bosch, Kagiso Rabada, Rashid Khan, and Trent Boult. Fresh off their historic maiden SA20 championship triumph in 2025, MI Cape Town has revealed its list of retained players, preserving a strong blend of local and international talent as the team prepares to defend its crown in the 2026 season. Six Key Players Retained The franchise has retained a total of six players—four domestic and two international—each of whom played a vital role in MI Cape Town's 2025 success. Their performances were significant not only in the SA20 league but also across the broader Mumbai Indians global cricket network. South African Core Remains Strong Among the local contingent, Ryan Rickelton and George Linde will continue their journey with the franchise into a fourth consecutive season. Corbin Bosch, who was added to the squad last season, also returns after making a notable impact. Joining them is star pacer Kagiso Rabada, who has been secured as MI Cape Town's wildcard player, further strengthening the South African core. Leading the overseas lineup is Rashid Khan, the captain who steered MI Cape Town to their 2025 SA20 title. He will be joined once again by veteran left-arm pacer Trent Boult. The pair were instrumental in delivering the team's maiden championship and will look to replicate their success in the upcoming campaign. Also joining the international roster is West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran, who has been pre-signed and is set to make his debut for the franchise in 2026. view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 15:40 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
