Brian Lara, Matt Hayden, Wiaan Mulder: South African batsman has Test records in his sights

Brian Lara's historic all-time record of 400 was under threat with South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder on the brink of making Test history, before a shock decision ended his shot at history. Mulder was unbeaten on 367 from a staggering 334 balls at lunch on day two of the Second Test against Zimbabwe, and had three of the greatest Test batsmen in history in his sights as he pursued the record for the highest runs scored in an innings. But Mulder, the first-time captain, declared during lunch, ending his chance at further history with South Africa at 5-626. Sri Lankan great Mahela Jayawardene was the next name on the leaderboard (374 v SA, 2006), with Matthew Hayden's 380 against Zimbabwe in 2003 sandwiched between two Lara knocks. The West Indies legend scored 375 against England in 1994, then a decade later plundered an unbeaten 400 - a mark which has stood for more than 21 years. But Mulder could have taken a blowtorch to that mark. At lunch on day two, he'd smashed 49 boundaries and four sixes to take South Africa to 5-626, and rarely looked troubled against a well-beaten Zimbabwe attack. Mulder had already left some all time greats in the rear view mirror. He passed Leonard Hutton (364 v Australia in 1938) and the legendary Sir Gary Sobers, who cranked an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan in 1958. Further down the list are the Australians in Dave Warner (335*), Mark Taylor (334*), Don Bradman (334) and Michael Clarke (329*). Mulder already surpassed Hashim Amla's unbeaten 311 against England in 2012 for the highest score by a South African in a Test match. This Test series has had a staggering impact on his career figures, too, as he brought up the second and now third centuries of his Test career. Before the first Test, he averaged 22.21 with the bat. With his unbeaten 367, that has ballooned to 38.43.

Amid the Kochi Tuskers buzz, can Kerala have another go at IPL?

When the season started this year, the Indian Premier League (IPL) conducted an event called the 'IPL Fan Park' in Kochi. The initiative was aimed at bringing a real-time IPL experience to fans in cities where matches are not held. The event took place in the parking lot of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, where fans gathered to virtually witness two IPL matches. But things were different 14 years ago. In the fourth season of the IPL, the state had a team of its own. Kochi Tuskers Kerala (KTK), an ill-fated IPL team that got ousted just a year after its induction. In 2010, when two new franchises were introduced in the IPL, a group of bidders came together to form a team representing Kerala. The much-celebrated team boasted a star-studded lineup, including Mahela Jayawardene, Muttiah Muralitharan, Brendon McCullum, V V S Laxman, R P Singh, Ravindra Jadeja and S Sreesanth.

Bombay High Court orders BCCI to pay 538 crore to Kochi Tuskers owners

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 19 (ANI): The Bombay High Court on Wednesday upheld the arbitral awards issued in 2015, directing the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to pay a total of Rs 538.84 crore in compensation following the termination of the Kochi Tuskers Kerala franchise from the Indian Premier League (IPL), as per ESPNcricinfo. As per the court's ruling, the BCCI must pay Rs 385.50 crore to Kochi Cricket Private Limited (KCPL) and Rs 153.34 crore to Rendezvous Sports World (RSW), the two stakeholders of the now-defunct franchise. Kochi Tuskers Kerala competed in just one IPL season, in 2011, finishing eighth out of ten teams. The franchise was terminated by the BCCI in September that year for allegedly breaching contractual terms by failing to furnish a bank guarantee within the specified timeframe. This led to a lengthy legal battle, culminating in arbitration, which ultimately went in favour of KCPL and RSW. The team, captained by Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene, registered six wins and eight losses during their sole campaign. The squad featured high-profile players including New Zealand's Brendon McCullum, legendary Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, and Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. 'The jurisdiction of this Court under Section 34 of the Arbitration Act is very limited,' Justice Riyaz I. Chagla said in his order, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo. 'BCCI's endeavour to delve into the merits of the dispute is in teeth of the scope of the grounds contained in Section 34 of the Act. BCCI's dissatisfaction as to the findings rendered in respect of the evidence and/or the merits cannot be a ground to assail the Award,' he added. 'The conclusion of the learned Arbitrator namely that BCCI had wrongfully invoked the bank guarantee which amounted to a repudiatory breach of the KCPL-FA would call for no interference under Section 34 of the Arbitration Act considering that this is based on a correct appreciation of the evidence on record,' he noted. Six weeks of time have been granted to the BCCI to file an appeal. (ANI)

Harbhajan Singh lambasts Mumbai Indians coaching staff for interfering in IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 vs PBKS, says 'Don't show desperetness'

Harbhajan Singh lambasts Mahela Jayawardene's actions during MI vs PBKS, IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 match. New Delhi: On June 2, in the second qualifier for the IPL in 2025, the Mumbai Indians lost to the Punjab Kings. Setting a tough target of 204 runs, the five-time champions could not win, so the Punjab Kings qualified for the final instead. Mumbai Indians' bowlers secured two early wickets, but were unable to curb Punjab Kings' aggressive scoring. Jasprit Bumrah, despite high expectations, had an ineffective performance, conceding 40 runs without taking a wicket. Mumbai Indians' difficulties in their second innings led to head coach Mahela Jayawardene taking a more active role, frequently providing on-field guidance to his players. Harbhajan Singh criticized Mumbai Indians' coaching staff after expressing disapproval of Jayawardene's behavior. 'Look at the Mumbai Indians dugout. When they were leaking runs, there was too much involvement from the outside,' said Harbhajan on his official YouTube channel. 'The coaches are telling a bowler like Jasprit Bumrah what to do and what not. A dressing room needs to remain calm and composed. Coaches should only give advice. Don't show desperation. So somewhere I felt that when this happens way too much, it breaks the player's spirit,' he added. Harbhajan Singh, a former Mumbai Indians captain, played for the team from 2008 to 2017. His final season with the franchise coincided with Jayawardene's tenure. Mumbai Indians (MI) showed significant improvement after a slow start to the IPL season, ultimately securing fourth place with eight wins from fourteen matches. Their victory over the Gujarat Titans in the eliminator secured a spot in the second qualifier, however, they were unable to advance to the final for the fifth consecutive year.
