Safety measure? Or intimidation tactic? Masked ICE agents spark the debate
A group of Democratic attorneys general has now asked Congress to pass a law forcing Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to routinely operate without masks, arguing the policy of letting agents operate anonymously has sparked multiple police impersonators. Democratic members of Congress have also pushed the administration to make ICE agents more readily identifiable.
Federal authorities say ICE agents need to conceal their identities to protect their families from retaliation as they execute President Donald Trump's orders to conduct the largest mass deportation in history.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said gang members and Antifa-affiliated groups have been publicizing agents' faces and home addresses. She said agents need to mask up to remain safe, especially when there have now been multiple attacks on federal immigration sites and individual agents.
"We will prosecute those who dox ICE agents to the fullest extent of the law. These criminals are taking the side of vicious cartels and human traffickers," Noem said in a July 11 statement. "We won't allow it in America."
'Pissing off ordinary Americans'
Critics say masked agents are being used largely as an intimidation tactic that has little grounding in actual officer safety. They fear it's instead weakening bonds between the public and law enforcement. The American Civil Liberties Union also argues the lack of accountability exacerbates racial profiling by unidentifiable officers.
"Secret police tactics like this erode trust in law enforcement and allows criminals to dangerously impersonate officers ‒ which is already happening," said Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, a Democrat.
Retired California police supervisor Diane Goldstein said masked agents are exacerbating tensions because there's virtually no public accountability when law enforcement operates anonymously. Goldstein was a police lieutenant in the Los Angeles area and is now executive director of the Law Enforcement Action Partnership, a nonprofit that works with communities to help reform policing.
"You know who doesn't wear masks? Judges. District attorneys. Public defenders. State and local law enforcement, except for very narrow carveouts," Goldstein said. "The safety issue is just an excuse. The administration doesn't seem to understand that it's their heavy-handed tactics that are increasing the level of danger to their officers. They are pissing off ordinary Americans."
Harder to 'tell the difference between a bad guy and a good guy'
The issue of wearing masks in public to provide anonymity has a long history in the United States, and some states ban protesters from wearing them. Those laws typically trace their origin to KKK marches, but have more recently been used by authorities to limit mask-wearing by pro-Palestinian protesters, often on college campuses, according the the ACLU.
Trump himself has criticized protesters who wear masks, posting on Truth Social on June 8, "... from now on, masks will not be allowed to be worn at protests. What do these people have to hide, and why???"
Goldstein said Trump's comment gets at the heart of why police officers should rarely hide their identity.
Modern policing traces its origins to Sir Robert Peel's Nine Principles of Policing, developed in the early 1800s to guide England's new Metropolitan Police. The "Peelian principles" centered the approach that effective policing depends on community cooperation, trust, and the concept that officers are part of the community, not standing apart from it.
"Everything they are saying goes against everything law enforcement has been taught about how we should serve others," Goldstein said of the masked agents. "Right now, Homeland Security is operating like thugs and criminals. And when we can't tell the difference between a bad guy and a good guy..."

Their decision to vote for Trump also was inspired by Trump joining forces with RFK Jr., which they felt could improve nutrition policies. "Nutrition is a huge thing for me..." "I felt Trump would calm down the Ukraine/Russia basically say 'stop this shit' and create a calmer world for us." But, according to the MAGA voter, everything went south with the Trump administration's handling of the Epstein files. "Guy thinks we're stupid. He campaigns on the Epstein files, realizes he's on there and now is telling us to stop worrying about it." The White House has called the Wall Street Journal's claim that Trump was notified by the Attorney General that his name was in the Epstein files a "fake news story." "I know he brought this up during his campaign, but I thought he'd be sensible enough to work across the aisle with Democrats on this matter, but this is insane." They also called out Trump's "Big, Beautiful, Bill" that they described as "abhorrently terrible." As well as Trump's tariffs increasing costs for young people. "Wtf is this guy thinking other countries will pay more. We're the ones having to foot the cost." They took issue with Trump's immigration and deportation policies call them "messed up," because Trump has given ICE "free will to do whatever." Related: And finally, the post ended with a promise to abandon Trump in the midterms. "I will absolutely be voting all blue come the midterms and will be voting for a sensible democrat next election." After reading the post, most people in the comments were not exactly applauding the MAGA voter for their switch-up. "Wow, this is someone who even seems to have paid more attention than most, but also somehow discounted 99% of things Trump said he'd do. I just can't with that level of cognitive dissonance," one user said. "'She didn't have any ideas that I considered fresh and new, so I figured I may as well vote for the guy who babbled utter nonsense instead,'" another user wrote sarcastically, referencing the voter's comments on the presidential debate. "This sounds like a lot of people in my family's rationale for voting Trump, who should have had enough common sense to think things through. They'll never admit they're wrong and vote democrat though. At least this person realized they were wrong, albeit way too late," this user wrote. "They really give him too much credit thinking these pie in the sky thoughts that'd he abolish everything he said he would, and replace it all with something way better, which he never had a plan to do." 'Her sudden and tragic departure has left a deep void in our hearts and in the community she was so warmly a part of.' 'Our entire community is grieving alongside the family during this unimaginably difficult time,' he continued. 'Words cannot fully capture the depth of our pain, but we are united in our mourning and committed to standing with the family in love, prayer and support.' The preteen was visiting The Boardwalk at Hersheypark on Thursday, July 24, when she became "in distress" in the water, according to a statement from John Lawn, CEO of Hershey Entertainment & Resorts. 'From the moment our lifeguard team recognized that a child was in distress, they performed an immediate rescue, followed by continuous, coordinated life-saving efforts by our lifeguards, on-site first responders and medical personnel," Lawn said. In an updated statement obtained by WGAL-TV, the water park said the incident 'occurred at the wave pool within The Boardwalk." The area 'remain closed' after the incident 'out of respect for the family and deep appreciation of our team members who worked so valiantly in their efforts to save the life of the guest.' A representative told PEOPLE after the tragedy that Hersheypark "places the highest priority on water safety at The Boardwalk," and there were over 100 trained lifeguards at the park at the time of the incident, including "10 lifeguards specifically dedicated to the wave pool.' "The specific lifeguards stationed at the wave pool received the highest level of training and certification, which includes deep-water lifeguarding, Basic Life Support, AED use, supplemental oxygen support, CPR and First Aid," the spokesperson continued.
