American Heritage softball team's state title hopes fall one run short

Miami Herald24-05-2025
The Patriots just need to take one more step up the ladder.
American Heritage's bid for its first softball state championship since 2018 came up a run short on Friday after getting nipped by a tough Fort Walton Beach squad, 7-6, in the FHSAA Class 4A state title game.
Last year, American Heritage reached the state semifinals after a five-year hiatus but was turned back before reaching the title game with a young team.
'So every year we've made it one game further,' American Heritage coach Samantha Banister said. 'I told the team, 'Remember what this (loss) tastes like because it won't happen again.' We are returning everyone except for two seniors. It's a lot to be excited about.
'We were up against a lot of challenges early on this year. We had our ace and our three-hitter leave before the season started. I didn't know how the girls were going to respond.'
American Heritage took a 1-0 first inning lead but Fort Walton Beach scored three runs in the second, two in the fourth and two more in the sixth to hold off the Patriots.
Bella Brenton, Bria Villano, Ari Reynolds, Mia West and Kylie Diaz delivered RBIs for the Patriots, which also scored twice in third and added two runs in the fifth.
American Heritage started eighth-grade pitcher Lyric Rodriguez in the title game. She went six innings, giving up seven runs – five earned – on 11 hits and two walks. She struck out none.
'I couldn't be more proud of Lyric Rodriguez for coming in and how she did as an eighth-grader,' Banister said. 'She did it without any hiccup. She has been flawless all year. She is 13-2 and she has been our horse all year. She is 13-years old and I couldn't ask for more. She has been our dog every game that we needed to win.'
Rodriguez said her changeup and riseball were working well but at the end of the day, she was just trying to keep the ball inside on the hitters.
'Of course we feel pressure but I was just trying to suck it up and get through it and be there for my team,' Rodriguez said. 'I think next year we are going to come back bigger and better. Going forward, I think we just need to remember this moment and know what we need to fix.'
It was the first time Fort Walton ever reached the state tournament and head coach Taryn Quinn said they had nothing but respect for American Heritage.
'This team is tough. We're tough and the team we played was tough but we've been passing bats now for a while and it was nice to see the kids coming through and trusting the process,' she said.

Steelers send T.J. Watt to Patriots for standout safety in bold trade prediction

T.J. Watt trade speculation is reaching an all-time high — when analysts aren't predicting if he'll re-sign with the Steelers, they're predicting where he'll land next. Bleacher Report's Brent Sobleski recently predicted four trade packages for Watt — but arguably the most surprising sees Pittsburgh send their star defender to the Patriots for a 2026 second-round pick, a 2027 third-round pick, and former first-round safety Jabrill Peppers. "Because the Patriots are still in transition, they can send veteran safety Jabrill Peppers back in return," Sobleski wrote. "They're unlikely to give up a future first-rounder, though. Pittsburgh still has DeShon Elliott and Juan Thornhill along the back line, but Peppers can be used as a defensive chess piece to help offset the loss of Minkah Fitzpatrick." It almost feels criminal, even in a trade prediction, to suggest the Steelers would trade away Watt for anything less than a first-round pick. But considering the shocking George Pickens' and Minkah Fitzpatrick's packages this offseason, anything is possible. Adam Schefter reported that while the Steelers aren't willing to deal their superstar defender, outside trade interest in Watt is expected to increase following the recent acquisitions of Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith. It's unlikely Pittsburgh entertains any trade offers for Watt, but as negotiations drag on, one has to wonder — is a 30-year-old edge rusher, potentially exiting his prime, worth over $40 million per year? Watch: Patriots fans react to Stefon Diggs arriving at training camp

New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs ran on the field to a chorus of cheers on Wednesday, after being cleared to participate at training camp. The veteran four-time Pro Bowler suffered an ACL injury that ended his season prematurely last October with the Houston Texans. He has been working hard behind the scenes to return before the start of the season, and that hard work led to him being available on the first day of training camp. Before the injury, Diggs was coming off six straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons. He has been widely viewed as one of the most consistent and productive wide receivers in the league for years. Patriots fans are hopeful he can bring that same level of success during his run in New England. Diggs had a productive 2024 campaign leading up to the injury in a loaded Texans' offense, recording 47 catches for 496 yards and three touchdowns. A return to form for the star wideout would add tremendous value to the Patriots' offense. Combining his natural playmaking abilities with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels' play-calling could be special to watch. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

Taylor Decker, Alim McNeill, Malcolm Rodriguez headline injured Detroit Lions on PUP list

Six Detroit Lions players were placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list before the start of training camp, highlighted by a couple stars and a big name. Left tackle Taylor Decker, defensive tackle Alim McNeill and linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez will not take part in practice for the foreseeable future as they've been placed on the PUP list. McNeill and Rodriguez were expected to be on the PUP list as they continue their recovery from season-ending injuries suffered late last fall, while Decker comes as a bit of a surprise. The Lions did not list what injury Decker is currently out with. Cornerback Khalil Dorsey, offensive guard Miles Frazier and defensive lineman Mekhi Wingo were the other three players placed on the PUP list. Within a 17-day period last season, McNeill and Rodriguez both tore the anterior cruciate ligament in their right knees. Rodriguez went down in a Thanksgiving Day win over the Chicago Bears and McNeill suffered the same fate in a Dec. 15 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Each players isn't expected to return to action until later this year. Until they are activated, neither McNeill nor Rodriguez will count against the 53-man active roster limit. While the absence of Rodriguez and McNeill will hurt, the Lions are well-fortified at the positions they play after making a number of moves this offseason. At linebacker, Detroit re-signed Trevor Nowaske and added both Grant Stuard and Zach Cunningham. They also beefed up the interior of the defensive line, bringing back Levi Onwuzurike before signing Roy Lopez and drafting Tyleik Williams in the first round. The offensive line, however, continues to take hits. Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow surprisingly decided to retire during the offseason, a move that just became official, while his potential replacement, second-round pick Tate Rateledge out of Georgia, has yet to sign his contract. It's unclear at this time if Decker is expected to miss any regular season time with whatever injury he currently has.
