Erasmus hits back at Gatland: We did not spy on Lions...Wales spied on us
Rassie Erasmus, South Africa's two-time World Cup-winning coach, has hit back at Warren Gatland's accusations that the Springboks spied on the Lions in 2021, claiming Wales employed similar tactics later that same year. Writing exclusively for Telegraph Sport, Gatland on Friday revealed how the Lions believed Erasmus and his South Africa coaching staff had access to the Lions' calls and tactics on the 2021 Covid-affected tour, which had been obtained by spying. Gatland explained how a photographer had managed to take a picture of Erasmus on the pitch during the first Test holding a piece of paper which contained several of the Lions' calls. But later on Friday Erasmus responded with a series of tweets on the X platform, saying that the piece of paper actually contained words in Afrikaans linked to South Africa's own game plan. 'Damn, they manage [sic] to decipher our Afrikaans game plan! Kudos to you! Great spying,' Erasmus, who led South Africa to back-to-back World Cups in 2019 and 2023, wrote. Erasmus went on to accuse Wales of similar tactics in the autumn of 2021, although Gatland had not rejoined the principality as coach at that stage. The Springboks were forced to evacuate their Cardiff hotel twice overnight before their match with Wales, and Erasmus claims that when they were safely allowed to return sensitive information had been taken. 'I hear from a source from within the Wales [sic] camp that whilst we were evacuated all our notes and plans were photographed and the white board sheets taken,' Erasmus said. 'We were again forced at around 06h00 for [sic] another evacuation!!' Gatland wrote how the Lions' suspicions grew in the first Test, 'when Lukhanyo Am hit Elliot Daly with a massive man-and-ball tackle, reading a move that we had not used before during the tour matches'. Erasmus also addressed that accusation in a third tweet: 'Lukie [Am] dit [sic] really well to read that one skip pass (we call that a 100) Exceptional read to see the one skip pas [sic] and make the tackle!' In another tweet Erasmus appeared to suggest the Lions broke covid rules when he said 'not all sources are credible' along with a picture of South Africa's curfew restrictions during the Lions tour.

O'Dowda exit confirmed Callum O'Dowda's departure to Hungarian side Ferencvaros has been confirmed. The Republic of Ireland international has joined the Budapest side on a permanent deal. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community. His departure represents the first exit of a contracted player this summer after nine senior players saw their contracts expire earlier this week. The 30-year-old signed a new contract with Cardiff earlier this year which should have taken him to 2028, however following relegation he has opted to head to the continent for a new challenge. The Hungarian side are managed by former Republic of Ireland and Tottenham striker Robbie Keane and are in the qualifying rounds for the Champions League. They won the Hungarian top flight last season. Article continues below O'Dowda signed under Steve Morison back in 2022 and went on to represent the club on 94 occasions, scoring six goals and providing eight assists. After injuries to several senior stars last year - like Joe Ralls, Aaron Ramsey and Jak Alnwick - the utility player donned the captain's arm band on a number of occasions. "We'd like to thank Callum for his efforts over the past three seasons and wish him the best of luck for the future," the club said in a statement. Ex-Aston Villa midfielder on radar While Cardiff fans are likely to have to wait until after the pre-season tour of Spain for senior signings, there could be movement at under-21s level. It is understood Cardiff are keen on signing recently-released Aston Villa midfielder Kyrie Pierre. The 20-year-old, who plays centrally but can also operate on either wing, left Villa last month, having joined their academy from Bristol Rovers back in 2021. He played in Europe in and Premier League 2 for the young Villans. The youngster scored five times in 32 Premier League 2 appearances for the Midlands club. City, who are yet to agree personal terms with Pierre, on Thursday announced the addition of another midfielder in Matthew Apter, another who left a Premier League club —Everton— this summer. Centre-back duo Charlie O'Brien, a Cork native just like new first-team boss Barry-Murphy, and Gabriel Keita were also confirmed as academy signings. Isaac Jefferies has also put pen to paper on a new deal with the club. Ramsey completes Mexico move Wales captain Aaron Ramsey has completed his move to Mexican top-flight side Pumas UNAM, becoming the first high-profile British player to sign for a club in Liga MX. The 34-year-old has signed a one-year deal with the Mexico City-based outfit, officially named Club Universidad Nacional, and says he is 'excited by the challenge' of continuing his career in North America. Ramsey, who shares an agent with Pumas manager and former Celtic player Efraín Juárez, said the head coach played a key role in convincing him to make the switch. 'I had many conversations with him,' said the former Arsenal and Juventus midfielder. 'What he's done in his young career so far has been exceptional. The vision and the values this club have really excited me and was something I wanted to be a part of." The Caerphilly-born playmaker has not featured for Wales since September 2024 and last played a competitive game in March. Now, he faces the physical demands of playing at altitude in one of the world's most challenging footballing environments. 'The altitude is definitely something to get used to,' he admitted. 'I'm doing well at the moment. Now it's about taking the next steps and hopefully I'll be on that pitch as soon as possible helping my team-mates. I don't want to put a date on it but hopefully very soon.' Despite his recent injury setbacks, Ramsey remains determined to prolong his career and hopes to lead Wales at the 2026 World Cup. He joins a Pumas side who finished sixth in the Liga MX standings last season and qualified for the Concacaf Champions Cup. 'I've played with players who understand this league and have had conversations with them,' he said. 'It's very technical, a lot of great players have been produced, and the national team is very good.' Ramsey added: 'I've played for some of the best teams in the world and have always had pressure to win. I know what this club is capable of and I want to help them be successful and hopefully lift some silverware.' Pumas have not won a Mexican league title since 2011, but Ramsey says he is undaunted by the challenge and is eager to make his mark. 'I've experienced a lot in my career and that puts me in a good place going forward,' he said. 'I realise the expectation on this club and I'm here to play my part and help deliver what we all want this season.' The Gareth Bale Cardiff City takeover situation amid reports of official offer
The Gareth Bale Cardiff City takeover situation amid reports of official offer Multiple reports have emerged that Cardiff have received takeover bids from a Gareth Bale-led consortium Former Wales, and Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale (Image: Getty Images ) It has been two weeks since a story emerged which revealed a Gareth Bale-led consortium were interested in taking over Cardiff City. Understandably, it's a story which gripped the Bluebirds fan base. One of Cardiff's most decorated sons and the capital city club. It then ramped up when Bale spoke publicly to confirm his interest during a press opportunity at the UK premiere of the F1 movie starring Brad Pitt. "We are interested in getting Cardiff," Bale told Sky Sports. Bale added: "We are trying to engage with Cardiff and more news will come out on that in the future but hopefully we can get something done." Bale was right, more news did emerge. This week news reports of a bid being officially lodged were reported, adding fuel to the takeover talk. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community The Times claimed that the Bale-led consortium had tabled a £40m bid, while Sky Sports today suggested it was a £20m offer. Cardiff sources have confirmed there has been interest from Bale's group, as there has been from many others —there are other interested and well-funded parties— and there has been a letter of intent. Article continues below However multiple sources have now also insisted no official proposal has yet been put forward and while the interest is real, it is not as advanced as other reports might suggest. That being said, the consortium are unlikely to go away anytime soon. Indeed the huge differential in figures adds another confusing layer to all of this. And despite repeated approaches from WalesOnline, sources close to the consortium have declined to comment nor confirm whether a bid has officially been tabled. While talks have taken place, that is relatively normal as far as Cardiff are concerned. Cardiff as a club and a place is a hugely-attractive proposition for would-be buyers, of course, with a first-class infrastructure, a huge, populous catchment area and vast potential to be tapped into. Vincent Tan has been at the helm for 15 years and has received numerous enquiries from many interested parties over the years. As for the valuation, well, as ever, that is determined by the selling party. Football expert Kieran Maguire estimated that the club, now in League One, is likely worth somewhere in the region of £30m-£35m, however that would forego the eye-watering debt owed to Tan. Where he draws the line in terms of just how much money he is willing to write off is entirely his prerogative, of course. Tan has always maintained the stance that "everything is for sale except family", however in a post-relegation statement he reaffirmed his commitment to getting Cardiff back into the second tier. "To lose our place in the Championship is upsetting," he said in April. "The important thing is that we regain it at the earliest opportunity and I would like to take this chance to tell you that I am committed to getting us back." Tan has received his fair share of criticism, too. The Malaysian businessman has overseen two promotions to the Premier League, but the most recent drop means he has suffered more relegations than promotions as Cardiff chief. Some supporters believe it is time for a fresh start under new leadership, however Tan insists he still has the fire within him to turn the trajectory of the club on its head. "To say I don't care is wrong and I strongly push back on that," he added. "I watch every game and speak to the board and manager before and after each one. My family will tell you: I kick every ball! Article continues below "We have enjoyed good times together. I can tell all Cardiff City supporters that it is my intention to support correcting the situation we find ourselves in. I want us to all pull in the same direction. "I will make every effort to be in Cardiff at the next opportunity that my scheduling allows. I am sorry that we are where we are this summer. It is now time to rebuild."
