Paramount is laying off 3.5% of its US workforce as it deals with ongoing declines in its linear TV arm. This is the second layoff in a year after a 15% reduction in 2024.
Paramount is the latest old-media company, after Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery, to cut jobs in recent days as they adjust staffing to align with their declining legacy TV business. Paramount employed 18,600 worldwide as of the end of 2024.
The industry is in the midst of a broad reordering, prompted by the shift of audiences from legacy TV — which continues to generate a lot of cash but is shrinking — to streaming, which has recently started to show signs of profitability. As part of this shift, WBD and Comcast are spinning off their linear TV businesses into new companies.
As for Paramount, the cuts take place at a jittery time, as it seeks regulatory approval for its proposed merger with Skydance Media, a process that's been complicated by President Donald Trump's legal face-off with CBS's TV news crown jewel "60 Minutes."
Two top news execs, Wendy McMahon and Bill Owens, have already quit the company, citing disagreement with Paramount's handling of the matter.

Senate Republicans try to get Trump's tax cuts over the line, setting aside cost concerns
By Richard Cowan and Bo Erickson WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. Senate Republicans on Monday will try to pass President Donald Trump's sweeping tax-cut and spending bill, despite divisions within the party about its expected $3.3 trillion hit to the nation's debt pile. They were set for a marathon session in which the minority Democrats are allowed to offer an unlimited number of votes, part of the arcane process Republicans are using to bypass Senate rules that normally require 60 of the chamber's 100 members to agree on legislation. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released its assessment on Sunday of the bill's hit to the $36.2 trillion debt, figuring that it would add about $800 billion more than the version passed last month in the House of Representatives. Many Republicans dispute that claim, contending that extending existing policy will not add to the debt. Nonetheless, international bond investors see incentives to diversify out of the U.S. Treasury market. Democrats, meanwhile, hope the latest, eye-widening figure could stoke enough anxiety among fiscally minded conservatives to get them to buck their party, which controls both chambers of Congress. 'Republicans are doing something the Senate has never, never done before, deploying fake math and accounting gimmicks to hide the true cost of the bill," Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Sunday. "Republicans are about to pass the single most expensive bill in U.S. history to give tax breaks to billionaires while taking away Medicaid, SNAP benefits and good-paying jobs for millions of people." The Senate narrowly advanced the tax-cut, immigration, border and military spending bill in a procedural vote late on Saturday, voting 51-49 to open debate on the 940-page megabill. One powerful illustration of the Republican divide came on Sunday when Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina said he would not seek re-election, after Trump threatened to back a challenger to him in next year's midterm elections over his vote against the bill. Trump on social media has hailed the progress as a "great victory" for his "great, big, beautiful bill." In a separate post on Sunday, he said: "We will make it all up, times 10, with GROWTH, more than ever before." Trump wants the bill passed before the July 4 Independence Day holiday. While that deadline is one of choice, lawmakers will face a far more serious deadline later this summer when they must raise the nation's self-imposed debt ceiling or risk a devastating default. If the Senate succeeds in passing the bill, it will then go to the House, where members are also divided, with some angry about its cost and others worried about cuts to the Medicaid program. Republicans can afford to lose no more than three votes in either chamber to pass a bill the Democrats are united in opposition to. HITS TO BENEFITS The legislation was the sole focus of a marathon weekend congressional session marked by political drama, division and lengthy delays as Democrats seek to slow the legislation's path to passage. Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, the other Republican "no" vote, opposed the legislation because it would raise the federal borrowing limit by an additional $5 trillion. The megabill would extend the 2017 tax cuts that were Trump's main legislative achievement during his first term as president, cut other taxes and boost spending on the military and border security. Senate Republicans, who reject the CBO's estimates on the cost of the legislation, are set on using an alternative calculation method that does not factor in costs from extending the 2017 tax cuts. Outside tax experts, like Andrew Lautz from the nonpartisan think tank Bipartisan Policy Center, call it a "magic trick." Using this calculation method, the Senate Republicans' budget bill appears to cost substantially less and seems to save $500 billion, according to the BPC analysis. Asian shares are mixed after US stocks hit an all-time high
BANGKOK -- Asian shares started the week with gains after U.S. stocks closed at an all-time high following their recovery from the shocks of the Trump administration's trade policies. Canada's decision to cancel a plan to tax U.S. technology firms that had led President Donald Trump to halt trade talks helped to steady the markets. U.S. stock futures advanced after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the talks had resumed. In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 climbed 0.8% to 40,487.39. Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.3% to 24,084.20, while the Shanghai Composite index advanced 0.6% to 3,444.43. China reported that its factory activity improved slightly in June after Beijing and Washington agreed in May to postpone imposing higher tariffs on each others' exports, though manufacturing remained in contraction. In South Korea, the Kospi gained 0.5% to 3,071.70. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.3% to 8,542.30. Taiwan's Taiex lost 1.4% and the Sensex in India was down 0.6%. In Bangkok, the SET gained 0.4%. An update on inflation Friday showed prices ticked higher in May, though the rate mostly matched economists' projections. Inflation remains a big concern. Trump's on-again-off-again tariff policy has made it difficult for companies to make financial forecasts and strained household budgets. A long list of businesses from carmakers to retailers have warned that higher import taxes will likely hurt their revenues and profits. The U.S. has 10% baseline tariffs on all imported goods, along with higher rates for Chinese goods and other import taxes on steel and autos and the threat of more severe tariffs continues to hang over the economy. The current pause on a round of retaliatory tariffs against a long list of nations is set to expire on July 9. Failure to negotiate deals or further postpone the tariffs could once again rattle investors and consumers. In an interview with Fox News Channel's 'Sunday Morning Futures,' Trump said his administration will notify countries that the trade penalties will take effect unless there are deals with the United States. Letters will start going out 'pretty soon' before the approaching deadline, he said. The Federal Reserve is monitoring the tariff situation with a big focus on inflation. The rate of inflation has been stubbornly sitting just above the central bank's target of 2%. In a report Friday, its preferred gauge, the personal consumption expenditures index, rose to 2.3% in May. That's up from 2.2% the previous month. The Fed cut interest rates three times in late 2024 following a historic series of rate hikes to cool inflation. The PCE was as high as 7.2% in 2022 while the more commonly used consumer price index hit 9.1%. The Fed hasn't cut rates so far in 2025 over worries that tariffs could reignite inflation and hamper the economy. Economists still expect at least two rate cuts before the end of the year. Bond yields held relatively steady. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.25% from 4.27% late Friday. The two-year Treasury yield, which more closely tracks expectations for what the Federal Reserve will do, stood at 3.73%. In other dealings early Monday, U.S. benchmark crude oil lost 31 cents to $65.21 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, gave up 20 cents to $66.60 per barrel. US prices for China-made goods on Amazon rise faster than inflation, analysis shows, as tariffs bite
By Siddharth Cavale NEW YORK (Reuters) -Prices for goods made in China and sold on have been rising faster than overall inflation, according to an analysis of 1,400 different products conducted exclusively for Reuters by the analytics firm DataWeave, a sign that tariffs are starting to hit American consumers. The analysis shows that price increases for those goods accelerated beginning in May, a signal U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs are starting to filter through to consumers. The median price of a basket of more than 1,400 products made in China and sold on to U.S. buyers has gone up by 2.6% between January and mid-June, outpacing the latest U.S. inflation rate for core goods, which runs only through May. Price increases vary depending on the item sold, and prices for some goods declined. For the six months through May, core goods CPI - which excludes services - rose by 1%, implying a 2% annualized rate. Both the federal data and DataWeave's study show that goods costs have trended upward in the last couple of months as tariffs begin to exert pressure on prices. DataWeave analyzed more than 25,000 items, focusing on 1,407 products sold on Amazon because those clearly list China as the country of origin. The firm used median prices rather than averages, since averages can be skewed by short-term price spikes or unusually high or low values. The basket of China-made goods includes products sold by Amazon as well as its third-party sellers. Third-party sellers account for 62% of all products sold on Amazon. The goods rising at the fastest rate include school and office supplies, electronic items such as printers and shredders, blank media items like CDs and DVDs, and home goods such as furnishings and cookware. China, which shipped $438.9 billion of goods last year to the U.S., is a big global supplier in all of these categories. Of the 1,407 items tracked in the DataWeave study between January and June 17, 475 showed price increases, 633 remained unchanged, and 299 saw price declines. For example, a Hamilton Beach electric kettle climbed to a median $73.21 from $49.99, while the price of a GreenPan frying pan more than doubled to $31.99. Through April, inflation across that product group remained modest. Prices increased more sharply in May and accelerated into June, particularly in the Home & Furniture and Electronics categories, which showed a median increase of 3.5% and 3.1%, respectively, over the time frame of the study. Seasonal dynamics could play a role, but the timing and rate suggest cost shocks are rippling through the retail supply chain, said Karthik Bettadapura, co-founder and CEO of DataWeave. "Even modest duties can translate quickly when margins are thin and replenishment cycles are fast. What we're seeing in June is the first broad-based price step-up, as sellers begin adjusting to higher landed costs," Bettadapura said. Amazon said it has not seen the average prices of products change up or down appreciably outside of typical fluctuations. "Any comparison of a small number of products does not reflect prices more broadly across the hundreds of millions of products available on Amazon," an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement. Numerous consumer companies have warned of tariff-led price hikes, including the largest U.S. retailer Walmart. Department store chain Macy's said it was selectively raising prices to offset tariffs. Nike, which recently started selling on Amazon after a six-year break, said it would raise prices across various products starting June 1. Trump has defended tariffs as necessary to rebalance global trade and boost U.S. manufacturing output. Amazon's CEO Andy Jassy said in May the company worked with sellers to move orders to the U.S. ahead of tariffs, and it remained "maniacally focused" on keeping prices low. At the time, he said average selling prices had not appreciably risen. Retailers have been cautious in passing along the cost of tariffs due to weakening U.S. consumer sentiment and high interest rates. Retail trade sales dipped 0.9% in May from April, while consumer spending also fell unexpectedly in the month, according to federal data. "We think that firms are likely opting to delay price increases," Claudio Irigoyen, economist at Bank of America Securities, wrote earlier this month. U.S. tariffs currently in place include a 10% universal tariff, 50% on steel and aluminum products, and 25% on cars and auto parts. Additional steel tariffs took effect on June 23, which could cause "further price pressure on cookware, kettles, small kitchen appliances, and other household essentials in the next few months," Bettadapura said.
