‘No Fear Of Traffic Police': Wrong-Side Driving In Bengaluru Triggers Anger

News188 hours ago
The video was taken near the Shell petrol pump in Bengaluru's Seegehalli.
Driving on the wrong side of the road has become a growing problem in many cities and Bengaluru is no exception. A recent video from the city has gained attention online which shows a white SUV driving on the wrong side of a busy road without any hesitation. The video was taken near the Shell petrol pump in Seegehalli. It shows the SUV driving on the wrong side of the road. The car even occupies the right-most lane and heads straight into oncoming traffic. Other vehicles on the road can be seen adjusting their path.
The video was posted on X by a user who wrote, 'Wrong side driving is a new norm in Bangalore. Even cars, buses and trucks. This KIA driver was driving on the wrong side of the right most lane. This occurred in front of a shell petrol pump in Seegehalli, Bangalore." The user also tagged Bengaluru Traffic Police in the hope that action would be taken.

Soon after the video was posted, many people started commenting on the post. Most were angry and frustrated with how often such things happen in Bengaluru.
One user commented, 'We need to take so much effort to report these for action from the police. All this for a Rs 500 fine. This won't stop them from repeating it. Fines and enforcement need to be stricter."
Another added, 'No fear of traffic police. We should dismiss and send all the traffic cops home, saving taxpayers' money."
'Same problem at Shell petrol bunk in Thanisandra. The divider opening is directly in front of the Petrol bunk's exit. So, people drive on the wrong way to enter the petrol bunk and create traffic jams," someone pointed out.
'You stop them and they will justify why they are driving on the wrong side. This is what will happen when enforcement is so lax," a person said.
A frustrated individual wrote, 'I can post 100s of wrong-side driving vehicles videos everyday from my dashcam but what's the use? I was interested earlier but no one cares, I lost all hopes. This menace is increasing every day and no action plans to stop this."
'Heavy penalty and license suspension should be imposed. It's a risk to others' lives. How can someone be so ignorant!!" read another comment.
This isn't the first time such reckless driving has been caught on camera in Bengaluru. In December last year, a similar video had caught everyone's eye. It showed a passenger bus, full of people, driving on the wrong side of the road. The incident took place on NICE Road, between the Bannerghatta junction and the Electronic City toll booth.

Cartel of architects, CAs, Vasai Virar municipal officials colluded for illegal construction: ED

NEW DELHI: A "large cartel" of architects, chartered accountants, and officials of the Vasai Virar City Municipal Corporation in Maharashtra colluded for large-scale illegal construction on land meant for sewage treatment plants, and dumping ground was sold fraudulently to the public, the Enforcement Directorate has said. The federal probe agency said in a statement that fresh searches were conducted at 16 locations on July 1 in connection with the money laundering probe into the construction of 41 illegal buildings in Vasai Virar area. During the raids, bank deposits and mutual funds worth Rs 12.71 crore were frozen and cash of Rs 26 lakh was seized apart from "incriminating" documents and devices, it said. The money laundering case stems from an FIR registered by the Mira Bhayandar Police Commissionerate against some builders, local henchmen and others. The case, according to the ED, pertains to illegal construction of residential-cum-commercial buildings on government and private land under the jurisdiction of Vasai Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) since 2009. Over a period of time, 41 illegal buildings were constructed on the land reserved for sewage treatment plants and dumping ground as per the approved development plan of Vasai Virar City, the agency said. "The accused builders and developers deceived the public at large by constructing illegal buildings on such land and subsequently sold it to the general public by fabricating approval documents. "Even with prior knowledge that these buildings were unauthorised and would eventually be demolished, the developers misled the people by selling rooms in these buildings thereby committing serious fraud," the ED alleged. The Bombay High Court issued an order in July 2024 ordering the demolition of all 41 buildings. The residents of these residential units subsequently filed a special leave petition (SLP) before the Supreme Court but this was dismissed and VVCMC demolished these structures on February 20. Probe found, the ED said, that a "large cartel of architects, CAs, liaisoners and VVCMC officials are operating in collusion with each other." "This cartel is responsible for large-scale illegal construction in the jurisdiction of VVCMC," it said. The searches led to the recovery of "incriminating" digital devices which show the "involvement" of VVCMC officials in perpetrating this illegal construction scam, it said. The digital devices also show the "close" nexus of VVCMC officials/officers with the architects, CAs and liaisoners and the extent of "large-scale" corruption and black money flowing in the VVCMC to get the approval for construction of buildings, the ED said. The first round of searches in this case were conducted by the ED in May.

Know your laws: What to do if your intimate photos or videos are leaked online

The breakup of a relationship causes heartache. But what if the breakup also results in intimate photos or videos being circulated or put online? The circulation of Non-Consensual Intimate Images (NCII) grew with the internet, first due to smartphones and digital cameras. But, now with easy-to-use generative AI and apps, morphed or fake images are what can someone do if this happens to them?advertisement The first step, of course, is to collect the evidence and file a complaint:1. One can take screenshots if the image has been shared on a device/online or the URL link if there is a webpage that is hosting the image.2. If the ex-partner has made a threat to circulate or share the image, the voice recording or text sent by the ex-partner is also India, creating, publishing or circulating such images, or even threatening to do so, is punishable under various provisions of the Information Technology Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita (BNS). Depending on the age and gender of the person, provisions of the Pocso Act, if the affected individual is a minor, or the Indecent Representation Of Women (IRWA) Act can also apply. Remember, most of these provisions are gender-neutral - both women and men can be affected by such of the provisions that may apply are:a. The Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000Section 66E - Punishes the capture, publication or transmission of private images without consent (up to three years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2 lakh).Sections 67 and 67A - Criminalises the publication of obscene content in electronic form (up to five years in jail and Rs 10 lakh fine).b. The Bharatiya Nyaya SanhitaSection 77 (Voyeurism) - Punishes those who share intimate images without consent, with penalties of three to seven years in 294 - Public exhibition of obscene 308 - 336 - Forgery to damage reputation, with punishment of up to three 351 (Criminal intimidation) - Covers threats of blackmail involving intimate content, with punishment of up to two years and a 356 - Criminal defamation with a jail term of up to two years.c. The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012This law protects minors from online sexual exploitation, including the circulation of explicit images. Sexual harassment carries a punishment of up to three years, while child pornography carries a jail term of up to five The Indecent Representation of Women ActSections 4 and 6 punish publication and circulation of images containing indecent representation of a complaint regarding intimate images/obscene images is open to anyone, and not just the person whose photos have been shared. Any person coming across such images can report them to the online platform where such a photo is shared, seeking to block the image, or to the police for criminal is a dedicated cybercrime cell and online portal in India for filing such complaints. The affected individual has the option to call the cybercrime designated helpline this helpline allows the person to create a system-generated login ID/acknowledgement number through SMS/email. The complainant would then have to complete the registration of the complaint on the reporting portal within 24 hours. One can also directly go to the portal to register a portal has a specific category of 'sexually explicit content' with subcategories - publishing a sexually explicit image is a separate category than publishing a sexual act/ complainant can choose to keep themselves anonymous, but will have to mark the state of residence so that the case can be assigned to the relevant state cyber cell. The complainant can track their complaints if they identify both cases, the complaint can share a link to the sexually obscene/explicit content or upload evidence as attachments - images, video, audio, documents, PDF etc.A description column is also available for the complainant to add necessary of the person suspected to have uploaded the images/video can be provided, including name, IDs, address, etc. Alternatively, a person can also choose to send a letter to the DCP Cyber Cell of their area of falls under global jurisdiction, meaning that a complaint can be made anywhere. It doesn't need to be in the place where the crime was originally committed or where the person is currently also means that if the individual has moved to a different city or even a different country, a complaint can be made as soon as they become aware that such an image once such NCII or fake image has been identified, one can ask for it to be blocked or taken media sites have a 'grievance mechanism' where any obscene or fake image/video can be reported for blocking. This is mandated under the Information Technology Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code Rules, the host site fails to do so or other images exist on search engines, the individual can also approach the court through the investigation officer to get a takedown order issued. This means that Internet intermediaries, including social media sites or even search engines like Google can be directed to take down the URL or image identified, and block access to if the grievance officer of the website/app does not take action on a complaint within 30 days, the affected person or the complainant can also file a complaint with the Grievance Appellate Committee under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY).In 2023, the Delhi High Court passed directions, calling for web hosts and search engines such as Google, Microsoft, Meta etc. to start using the software created for blocking access to child pornography to also identify and block NCII advent of Generative AI has created new problems. While an 'identified' URL for a morphed image may be blocked, there are concerns regarding how an image can be identified as a morphed or AI-generated unless the individual or any other user has specifically tagged and reported the image or video.- Ends
