Bumrah & Shardul OUT, Kuldeep IN? India's Likely Playing XI For 2nd England Test
Last Updated: The second Test of the ongoing five-match series between India and England will be played at Edgbaston from July 2 to 6. The second Test of the ongoing five-match series between India and England will be played from July 2 to 6 at Edgbaston in Birmingham. After losing the series opener in Leeds by five wickets, India would like to come up with a big show in the second match and level the series. According to reports in Indian media, star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will miss the second Test as part of his workload management. Bumrah, who is the world's No. 1 Test bowler, was India's best bowler in the series opener. He picked up five wickets in the first innings. In addition to Bumrah, Shardul Thakur is also likely to lose his place in the playing XI. Shardul bowled only six overs for India in the first innings and failed to impress with his batting as well. One out of Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep is likely to replace Bumrah for the second Test. Akash Deep has played seven Tests for India so far, whereas Arshdeep is yet to make his red-ball debut. The left-arm pacer from Punjab is a regular member of India's white-ball teams and also has played county cricket in England. As Shardul's replacement, the team management will have a choice to make between Nitish Kumar Reddy and Kuldeep Yadav. Nitish played all five Tests against Australia in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and in addition to his batting, he can contribute with the ball as well, whereas Kuldeep is India's specialist spinner. Many former greats and experts of the game have batted for Kuldeep's selection in India's playing XI for the second red-ball match in Edgbaston. As far as batting is concerned, Indian team management is unlikely to make any change. As many as four batters—Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant—scored five centuries for India in the first Test, and there will be expectations of a similar performance from them in the second match as well. Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair failed to do much with the bat in Leeds, but they are unlikely to lose their place after just one match. As far as the England team is concerned, Jofra Archer was added to the squad for the second Test on Thursday, and he could make his much-awaited Test return in Edgbaston. Edgbaston Test: As Bumrah dilemma widens, India can bet on Kuldeep's wrist magic, suggests ex-India coach
India prepares to face England in the second Test at Edgbaston. There are questions about Jasprit Bumrah's availability. Kuldeep Yadav's inclusion is under consideration due to the expected pitch conditions. Former cricketers suggest potential changes in the bowling attack. Remove Ads As India prepare to face England in the second Test at Edgbaston starting July 2, speculation over the playing XI is heating a five-wicket defeat in Leeds, questions are swirling around Jasprit Bumrah's availability, Kuldeep Yadav's potential return, and possible shake-ups in the bowling who bowled 44 overs across two innings in the first Test and took a five-wicket haul in the first, may be rested as part of workload management. The team management had earlier indicated he would play only three of the five Tests, but which ones remains Yadav's omission from the series opener raised eyebrows. With the Birmingham pitch expected to offer turn, his inclusion is now under serious consideration.'Kis tarah se hum Kuldeep Yadav ko team la sakte hain,' former India cricketer Sanjay Bangar said on Star Sports. 'The team will have to give some thought to how we can bring Kuldeep Yadav into the XI, because judging by the approach we saw from the England batters in the first Test, Kuldeep — who bowls wrist spin — could be effective. Historically, England's batters haven't played wrist spin particularly well. So that is definitely something worth considering.'Former India batter Subramaniam Badrinath believes the team could make two changes in the bowling attack.'I think one change could be replacing Shardul — I'd definitely look to include a bowler. And maybe instead of Prasidh Krishna, I'd look to add some variety. So probably, my changes would be Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav coming into the XI. But then again, the final XI will depend on the conditions,' Badrinath five-Test series, part of the World Test Championship cycle, began with the Leeds Test from June 20 to 24. England lead 1-0 . The second Test begins at Edgbaston on July 2, followed by matches at Lord's (July 10–14), Old Trafford (July 23–27), and The Oval (July 31–August 4).As fans await the team sheet, the big question remains: Will Bumrah sit out, and will India finally unleash Kuldeep?Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.

R Ashwin analyses: You have taken Shardul Thakur in the team and didn't give him a ball in the first 40 overs…has a very decent match-up against Joe Root
In the first Test at Headingly in Leeds, Shardul Thakur was not given the ball until the 40th over, while other bowlers were having a tough time, apart from Jasprit Bumrah. By the time the all-rounder was brought in, there were set batters at the crease, and the ball also lost its shine and was not letting swing. 'You have taken Shardul Thakur in the team and didn't give him a ball in the first 40 overs. And Joe Root was batting. And Shardul has a very decent match-up against Joe Root. So, if Shardul Thakur's role is not less, then I genuinely rate Shardul as a cricketer,' Ashwin analyzed on his YouTube channel. Thakur does have the knack of picking wickets. 'He has caught Ben Duckett and Harry Brook. He can make things happen. But he has to use them at the right time. But if this is going to be the way he is going to be used, I don't think he is really making any sense. Because he has to be given the ball for him to make a difference. He didn't bowl that much in the first 40 overs,' Ashwin observed. 'He didn't bowl that much in the second innings either. Obviously, much more than the first innings. So, his role was very limited and I think it is very unfair to raise an argument on what he did,' Ashwin added. Ajinkya Rahane advised the Indian team management to use Shardul Thakur with the new ball because of his ability to swing the ball. In the first Test, though, Shardul did bowl quite a chunk of overs in both innings, he took the ball when it did lose its shine a bit. 'I feel an all-rounder's role is very important. Shardul Thakur has been an experienced player and has done well in Test cricket overseas. I want to see more overs from Shardul. If the Indian team can use Shardul Thakur in a better way, that will be great. Whatever I have seen with him, he can swing the ball both ways and is a wicket-taker. If Shardul can bowl the first change or even given the new ball he can swing it both ways,' Rahane said on his YouTube channel.
