ENG vs IND: England pacer Mark Wood hopeful of comeback in fifth Test against India
England's pace spearhead Mark Wood is eyeing a return to Test cricket and hopes to feature in the fifth and final match of the ongoing series against India. Mandhana, who was deservedly adjudged the Player of the Match, was in her element as she tore apart the England bowling attack. The left-handed batter punished the likes of Em Arlott, Linsey Smith and Sophie Ecclestone and reached the three-figure mark in 51 balls. The Mumbai-born batter's innings included as many as 15 fours and three sixes. Mandhana's splendid innings finally came to an end in the final over. This was incidentally England's heaviest defeat in this format. (AP) Smriti Mandhana set up brilliantly with a fluent century, becoming the only Indian player with a century in each format – Tests, ODIs and now T20s. She led from the front in some style after skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was rested as a precaution after suffering a head injury during a warm-up match against an ECB eleven. She was on the balcony cheering as Mandhana stroked a boundary to reach a 51-ball century. The left-handed opener took charge and made full-use of a good pitch to hit a 62-ball 112, (16x4, 3x6). It took India to a huge 210/5 and the hosts never recovered from early setbacks to be dismissed for 113 in 14.5 overs. The Indian innings also saw valuable contributions from No. 3 Harleen Deol (43 off 23) after Shafali Verma (20 - 22 b), on a comeback, raised 77 runs for the first wicket with Mandhana. Mandhana played shots all around the wicket and none of the England bowlers had any impact on her until she was caught in the final over. With Mandhana having set it up, it was the turn of Indian spinners to pile on the home team's misery. It looked as if the hosts were taken by surprise. Skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt's 66 off 42 balls provided some resistance, but England were never in the chase. Left-arm spinner Shree Charani had a memorable outing, scalping four for 12 on T20I debut as England surrendered meekly. The 20-year-old from Andhra Pradesh has played five ODIs. The Indian bowlers were impressive, sticking to their task. Spinners Radha Yadav and Deepti Sharma took two wickets each, after seamer Amanjot Kaur had opener Sophia Dunkley caught behind chasing a wide ball. Mandhana had hit 30 T20I fifties before finally converting it to triple figures. 'It has taken a long time to get it, I had this habit of getting out in the 70s, 80s. We were talking before this tour that it is high time I got a century,' she said after the match. 'We had a good preparation, and these wickets are really good to bat on. We kept the wind factor in mind, just had to time the ball. Harleen got the momentum going after Shafali's wicket.' On India's bowling, she said: 'We discussed after the first innings if we are bowling against the wind, we have to bowl slower. The bowlers, the way they executed the plans was outstanding. We have four more matches, so we need to keep the momentum going.' Praggnanandhaa to join Magnus Carlsen's Team Liquid ahead of chess' Esports World Cup debut
A day after R Praggnanandhaa won the 2nd UzChess Cup, the 19-year-old from Chennai was announced as the newest member of Team Liquid, a move that sees him join forces with the likes of five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana. Praggnanandhaa thus becomes the fourth Indian chess player to sign up with an esports franchise with chess making its debut at the Esports World Cup soon to be staged in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from July 29 to August 1. Before Praggnanandhaa, his close friend Arjun Erigaisi was snapped up by Generation Gaming (Gen.G) while Nihal Sarin and Aravindh Chithambaram have been named on the roster of India-based S8UL. So far Arjun is the only player to have assured himself a spot in the Esports World Cup, which has spots for only 16 players. Both Carlsen and Caruana are also among the 12 grandmasters who have qualified. The others are Hikaru Nakamura (Team Falcons), Alireza Firouzja (Team Falcons), Ian Nepomniachtchi (Aurora), Nodirbek Abdusattorov (NAVI), Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (Team Vitality), Jan-Krzysztof Duda (Twisted Minds), Wei Yi (Weibo), Vladislav Artemiev (Team Spirit), Vladimir Fedoseev. During the FIDE World Cup in 2023, where Praggnanandhaa had ended up reaching the final before losing to the world no 1 from Norway, Carlsen had famously patted the Indian teenager on the back and exchanged a few words while still in the middle of his own game after the boy from Chennai had upset Hikaru Nakamura via tiebreakers. Carlsen had revealed that at his club Offerspill in Norway, Pragg's coach RB Ramesh had used the phrase 'Be Like Pragg' while explaining to young players the level of dedication they needed to have to succeed. Carlsen had in turn reminded Praggnanandhaa about the 'Be Like Pragg' catchphrase when he had defeated Nakamura. Carlsen and Praggnanandhaa were also teammates in the first season of the Global Chess League. Team Liquid started off as a StarCraft clan in 2000, and then grew into a championship-winning team. It has three training facilities around the world, at Los Angeles, São Paulo and Utrecht (The Netherlands). The Esports World Cup will be an event where the world's biggest esports clubs compete across 24 of the most popular esports titles. For the first time, the World Cup will also feature chess, which will be played online. The first edition of the Esports World Cup was held in 2024 and saw teams compete over eight weeks. The Esports World Cup 2025 is set to be the largest multi-title esports event in history which is expected to have at least 2,000 players and 200 teams competing for a combined prize pool of $70 million (approx. Rs 602 crore). Chess was also included as an Esports at the Khelo India Youth Games 2025 in Patna.
