Gautam Gambhir Gets Big Warning: 'You Got Every Player You Want, Now Deliver...'

Last Updated: Aakash Chopra believes head coach Gautam Gambhir has got 'every player he pointed at' and is now under pressure to deliver results, without any excuses. Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes that question marks will mount over head coach Gautam Gambhir if the team fails to do decently well in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Chopra said Gambhir has been given everything he has asked from the selectors and is now under pressure to deliver results. Though India won the 2025 Champions Trophy under his tutelage, India's Test fortunes have fallen off a slope in Gambhir's tenure, which began last year. India has won just three of the 11 Tests, while also suffering a humiliating first-ever home whitewash and a 3-1 away loss to Australia. In England, India started the first Test well but were exposed for their under-preparedness and lost by five wickets to concede a 1-0 lead. 'There is a lot of pressure on Gautam Gambhir," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel. 'The pressure is absolutely mounting. If you look at his performances in Test cricket and red-ball cricket, you will find that he has not won a lot of matches. He has won 2 matches against Bangladesh and one against Australia. However, we lost three against New Zealand, three against Australia and one against England. He has been losing and losing," he added. 'His performance in white-ball cricket has been good. The team has been playing well. But in Test cricket, I think the questions are going to be there. And I think there is a lot of pressure on this series. If this series doesn't go well, God forbid, I hope it goes well. I really want Indian cricket to do well. But if the England series doesn't go too well, then there will be a question mark — Where are they going and what are they doing?" Chopra added. He further said: 'Because the selectors feel that whatever team management is asking for, it is being given. The type of player you want, the number of players you want, and the player you are pointing at are being given. So, if this is the case, then you also need to deliver the results. Period. There is no excuse," he added. Apart from being seemingly in total control of the team without any seniors or influential coaches around, Gambhir has also got his way with some off-field controversial rules that dictate players' movements and time with their families. A big defeat in this five-Test series will put India quite behind in their aim to secure a World Test Championship final berth, after missing out last time. First Published: June 28, 2025, 09:42 IST

Good News For England! Express Pacer Reveals Return Date For India Tests

Last Updated: England fast-bowler Mark Wood has started bowling attack and revealed which Test against India could see his return. England fast-bowler Mark Wood is hoping to be fit and available for the fifth Test of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against India. The series began on Friday (June 20) in Headingley and will conclude with the last Test on July 31-August 04 at the Kennington Oval in London. The express pacer suffered medial ligament damage in his left knee during the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan and the UAE. He underwent surgery in March and has been under rehab since. After the first day of the Headingley Test, Wood revealed that he had started bowling and had 'officially' begun his comeback. 'Rehab is going well. I've just started bowling very lightly, so I'm on the comeback trail now officially," Wood told BBC Test Match Special. 'I'm hoping still to play a part in this series, so I get to have a look at some of the players here who I might come up against. I'm still targeting probably the last Test. Anything before that is maybe a bit too soon. The last Test, I might not get there, but at the minute, that's still my focus that I might play a part." 'It's been a bit slow (comeback) to start with. I haven't been able to do a lot, but starting to speed up now, getting some bowling in, hopefully not too much longer. I am still hoping that I can play a part right at the end of the series, but I'll just wait and see," he added. England was jolted by injuries before the start of the series. Wood was feared to miss all five Tests while Gus Atkinson and Jofra Archer missed the first Test due to hamstring and thumb injuries, respectively. The latter two are said to be in contention for the second match, at Edgbaston, Birmingham, between July 2-6. England's lack of experience in the bowling group was tangible on Friday as India put up 359/3 at Stumps with centuries from Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. The leader of the attack, Chris Woakes (who has also returned from injury recently), looked off-color as Ben Stokes (2/43) and Brydon Carse (1/70) were the only ones among the wickets. ENG vs IND: England pacer Mark Wood hopeful of comeback in fifth Test against India

England's pace spearhead Mark Wood is eyeing a return to Test cricket and hopes to feature in the fifth and final match of the ongoing series against India. The 35-year-old fast bowler is currently recovering from a knee injury and believes he could be fit in time for the Oval Test, scheduled to begin on July sustained medial ligament damage to his left knee during the 2025 Champions Trophy and had to limp off the field mid-match. He underwent knee surgery in March and was subsequently advised a four-month rehabilitation period-effectively ruling him out of the five-match series. However, Wood has made steady progress and is now hopeful of making a late to BBC Test Match Special, Wood said he had resumed light bowling and was cautiously optimistic about being available for the fifth Test. "Rehab is going well. I've just started bowling very lightly, so I'm officially on the comeback trail now," Wood said."I'm hoping to still play a part in this series so I get to have a look at some of the players here who I might come up against. I'm still targeting probably the last Test. Anything before that is maybe a bit too soon. The last Test-I might not get there-but at the minute, that's still my focus."The fifth Test of the England-India series will be held at The Kia Oval from July 31. To prove his fitness, Wood is expected to play in the County Championship match for Durham against Somerset, starting July his return would be a major boost for England, the team management is unlikely to rush him back, especially with the Ashes looming on the horizon. England's pace attack has already been depleted by injuries in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, with several frontline bowlers Stone and Jofra Archer are both in rehabilitation, with Archer expected to be available for the second Test. Reports suggest he will feature for Sussex against Durham in the County Championship on Sunday. Archer, who last played a Test in May 2021, has since only featured in white-ball admitted that the comeback has been slow, but he remains hopeful."It's been a bit slow to start with. I haven't been able to do a lot, but it's starting to speed up now. I'm getting some bowling in-hopefully not too much longer," he said."I am still hoping that I can play a part right at the end of the series, but I'll just wait and see." You May Also Like

India vs Pakistan women's ODI World Cup clash set for October 5 in Colombo: Report

The much-anticipated India vs Pakistan clash in the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup will reportedly take place on October 5 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, a neutral venue chosen under a hybrid hosting arrangement between the BCCI and PCB. The contest is expected to be one of the marquee fixtures of the tournament, given the intensity and historic rivalry between the two cricketing Women's ODI World Cup begins on September 30, with hosts India taking on Sri Lanka at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium. As per ESPNcricinfo, India will play their group matches across multiple venues, including Bengaluru and Colombo, with their other high-profile matches scheduled against Bangladesh (October 26 in Bengaluru) and defending champions Australia in what promises to be a competitive round-robin who secured qualification through the World Cup qualifiers in Lahore earlier this year, will play all their matches in Colombo. This arrangement stems from ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan, and mirrors India's decision to play their 2025 Champions Trophy fixtures in Dubai rather than traveling to Pakistan. As a result, Pakistan will face all their opponents-including Bangladesh (Oct 2), England (Oct 15), New Zealand (Oct 18), South Africa (Oct 21), and Sri Lanka (Oct 24)-at Australia, the defending champions, open their title defence on October 1 against New Zealand in Indore and will clash with Pakistan in Colombo on October 8, before a highly anticipated rematch of the 2022 final against England on October 22 in tournament will feature 28 league games followed by three knockout matches, played across five venues: Bengaluru, Indore, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, and Colombo. The first semi-final will be held on October 29 in either Guwahati or Colombo (based on Pakistan's qualification), while the second semi-final is set for October 30 in Bengaluru. The final will be played on November 2, with the venue depending on the teams involved—either Bengaluru or will be the first Women's ODI World Cup hosted by India since 2013, and the tournament will follow the same format as in 2022: eight teams in a round-robin stage, with the top four progressing to the semi-finals. Notably, the West Indies failed to qualify, losing out to Bangladesh on net run rate during the Watch

Gambhir's return due to family emergency not first such incident: Last year, a veteran India cricketer faced same fate

Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has returned home midway from the England tour due to a family emergency. Gambhir took the flight back to India ahead of the intra-squad warm-up match to attend to his mother, who has been admitted to the hospital. The head coach accompanied the Indian team to England for the five-Test series starting June 20 and was involved in training sessions ahead of the warm-up matches, but a sudden family emergency forced him to return home. In Gambhir's absence, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate will take charge of the team during the four-day intra-squad match between India and India A, starting on Friday. Sources within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed to Hindustan Times that Gambhir is indeed back in the country and is spending time with his family. 'Gambhir had to return to India because of a family emergency. He left for India on Wednesday. Our prayers are with his family,' a source said. "As of now, his exact date of arrival in the UK is not certain and it all depends on his mother's recovery. If everything goes well, he should be back for the first Test in Headingley," the source added. Gambhir's mother is currently receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a hospital in Delhi after experiencing a cardiac arrest. His return to England will depend on her condition as it evolves. Meanwhile, it is not the first time that a member of the Indian team left a series midway due to a family emergency in recent times. It happened with recently-retired spinner Ravichandran Ashwin when India was playing England in a Test series at home in 2024. Ashwin rushed back to his home in Chennai in the middle of the third Test against England in Rajkot after learning that his mother had been hospitalised due to a blackout, forcing him to leave the team temporarily to be by her side. "When I landed and got to the hospital, my mom was slipping in and out of consciousness, and the first thing she asked me was, 'Why did you come?' The next time she was conscious, she said, "I think you should go back because the Test match is happening," Ashwin told 'ESPNCricinfo' as he returned to the Indian team after his mother was stable. Earlier this year, India's bowling coach Morne Morkel was forced to make an abrupt departure from Dubai during the Champions Trophy, following a family emergency. Morkel flew back to South Africa on February 17, after receiving the news of his father Alberts' passing. His departure comes at a crucial moment, just days ahead of India's opening match against Bangladesh in the 2025 Champions Trophy. He later rejoined the Indian team in Dubai ahead of the side's final Group A match in Champions Trophy against New Zealand.
