PM Anwar to meet captains of industry from 36 Italian companies, including MNCs in Rome
KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to meet captains of industry from 36 Italian firms, including multinational companies such as Leonardo SpA, STMicroelectronics and Ferrero during his maiden working visit to Rome, Italy on July 1.
The meeting will take place during the Malaysia-Italy Economic Partnership Roundtable on July 2, Malaysian Ambassador to Italy, Datuk Zahid Rastam said today.
'In addition to the 36 Italian companies and several industry associations here, Malaysian companies accompanying the Prime Minister will also be in attendance,' he said in a virtual briefing here today ahead of the three-day working visit.
Leonardo specialises in aerospace, defence and security, STMicroelectronics is a semiconductor company, while Ferrero is one of the world's largest sweet-packaged food companies.
All three MNCs have a significant presence in Malaysia.
'Additionally, there will be Italian companies looking to further engage, invest, and explore opportunities for collaboration with Malaysia,' Zahid Rastam said.
Italy is the third-largest national economy in the European Union (EU) and the world's eighth-largest by gross domestic product (GDP). Its economy accounts for about 12 per cent of the EU's GDP.
Besides the business meeting, Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, is also set to discuss bilateral cooperation on trade, investment, defence, agro-commodity and digital economy with his counterpart Giorgia Meloni.
Anwar's visit is at the invitation of Meloni.
They are also expected to touch on the Malaysia-EU Free Trade Agreement (MEUFTA).
The first round of negotiations for a new and comprehensive FTA between the EU and Malaysia has been scheduled in Brussels, Belgium, from June 30 to July 4, 2025.
Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said in January that MEUFTA was expected to be concluded in 2026.
The EU is Malaysia's fourth-largest trading partner after China, Singapore and the United States. It accounted for 9.5 per cent of Malaysia's total trade in goods in 2023.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will undertake an official visit to Italy, France and Brazil from tomorrow until July 7, which will include his participation at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Senior press secretary to the prime minister Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said the visits to these major economic hubs – Rome, Paris and Rio de Janeiro – would strengthen Malaysia's diplomatic ties and trade relations with the three nations. He said the three markets collectively recorded bilateral trade valued at RM50.91 billion last year, Bernama reported. 'The visits present opportunities for rapid growth in sectors such as the economy, culture, technology and education,' he said during the Prime Minister's Office daily briefing. Anwar will also meet withy Malaysians and Muslim leaders during his visits. In Italy, he is slated to hold a bilateral meeting with his counterpart, Giorgia Meloni, to advance economic cooperation and pioneer joint cultural initiatives. In France, he is scheduled to meet with President Emmanuel Macron, with discussions focusing on trade, technology and education. Anwar will be in Rio de Janeiro from July 5 to 7, during which he will attend the 17th BRICS Summit at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. 'Malaysia's role as a BRICS partner country and Asean chair for 2025 will emphasise the importance of multilateralism,' said Tunku Nashrul. Anwar will be accompanied by a business delegation, including representatives from major corporations and innovative enterprises. 'Some companies already have operations or business interests in Italy, France or Brazil, while others are exploring new investment opportunities to expand their global networks,' Tunku Nashrul said. Among those joining Anwar are representatives from Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), Khazanah Nasional Bhd, Sunway, and Maybank. Anwar and his delegation are expected to return home on July 9 and will proceed to attend the Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Kuala Lumpur on the same day. The delegation will be travelling on a chartered flight from Malaysia Airlines to proceed smoothly from one country to another without the need for long transits due to the packed travel itinerary. 'The cost of chartering the aircraft is also more economical compared to deploying a full government aircraft operation,' Tunku Nashrul said. He said the government will fully cover travel costs for official delegates, while the business delegates will bear their own expenses.

Govt open to factual criticism of tax system, says Anwar
The expanded sales and service tax will take effect on July 1. PUTRAJAYA : The government upholds transparency and is ready to accept any criticism of the taxation system, provided that it is based on facts, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said today. Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said criticism should be conveyed through the proper channels and not in the form of slander or verbal abuse. 'I noticed some university students complaining about electricity bill adjustments – I don't understand. 'Electricity rates have not gone up, so is it true that they are affected? If it's true, then we need to fix it because public universities are exempted,' he said in his speech at an assembly with staff from the Prime Minister's Department. 'Such matters, when spread in the name of freedom, can become avenues for slander and verbal abuse. So I hope, brothers, sisters, younger friends or children, please provide facts. I have no issue with people complaining or offering criticism,' he said. Anwar also said that the adjustment of electricity tariffs and the expansion of the sales and service tax (SST) were to ensure that those with greater financial means contribute a fairer share, while protecting segments of the population from undue financial pressure. 'If possible, we don't want to burden the people with taxes. If there are one or two cases where people are affected, we can make improvements. However, to outright oppose the electricity (tariff) adjustment – I think that's not right,' he said. On June 9, the government announced a targeted review of the sales tax rate and the expansion of the service tax, to take effect on July 1. On June 13 meanwhile, the Energy Commission announced that more than 23.6 million domestic users in Peninsular Malaysia would benefit from a fairer and more progressive electricity tariff structure, effective July 1, 2025 to Dec 31, 2027.

‘Factual criticism on tax welcome'

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister said the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) has successfully recorded RM6.4bil in realised investments in the first six months of this year. The ECERDC has also successfully created more than 2,800 jobs to date, he added. 'The amount of committed investments has reached RM10.4bil, surpassing the RM10bil target set for 2025,' he said in a post on his official Facebook page. Earlier, Anwar attended a meeting with the ECERDC to review the latest progress on key performance indicators for the economic corridor, and to discuss the development framework for the East Coast Economic Region (ECER). 'I emphasised the importance of prioritising the country's long-term interests in attracting investors, including ensuring technology and skills transfer elements in every approved investment. 'The ECERDC needs to maintain this momentum through an efficient and proactive facilitation process which will strengthen the region as a competitive investment destination both nationally and internationally,' he added. Meanwhile, the ECERDC said the manufacturing sector accounted for 59% of the RM6.4bil realised investments, with Pahang leading the list with RM4bil, followed by Terengganu (RM1.3bil) and Kelantan (RM1.1bil). Johor reported investments amounting to RM13.3mil in the agriculture sector, specifically from the establishment of a biocompost facility in Mersing.
