Scarborough's Victorian cliff lift celebrates 150th birthday
One of Britain's oldest funicular railways is celebrating a major milestone this weekend with a series of family-friendly events. Built in 1875, Scarborough Spa Cliff Lift is marking its 150th mark the occasion, North Yorkshire Council and Scarborough Spa are hosting live performances, activities and heritage exhibitions at the spa and lift James, Scarborough Spa and cliff lift manager, said many generations of visitors shared fond memories of riding in the carriages up the cliffside. "There are a lot of people who have grown up and come to Scarborough with their grandparents or their parents and now they're bringing their children back to the lift," he said."It's a 40-second journey but it just seems to be quite memorable - it's that nostalgia as well."The Spa Cliff Lift was heralded as "a marvel of Victorian engineering" and used to transport passengers between the hotels on the Esplanade and the cost £8,000 to build and was originally powered by water and gas engines until it was converted to run on electricity in the 1950s. Alan Wilson, the lift's longest-serving supervisor, said he has "no plans to retire just yet"."I've worked on the lift for 23 years, and I still love it," he said."The best part is seeing visitors come back year after year. Everyone has a story to tell about the lift – it's part of what makes Scarborough so special."The weekend celebrations will include a live brass band, and Scarborough-based arts group Animated Objects will display working models of the commissioned in honour of the anniversary can also be viewed in the recently redeveloped South Cliff Gardens. Artist Adrian Lewis and poet Charlotte Riley collaborated to create the piece, which captures people's memories of both the lift and the gardens as "micro-poems".These are displayed on small metal plaques, designed to look like Victorian lift Riley said: "It's about people condensing down their treasured memories in very few words - they're very personal snippets of stories but quite a lot of them have really universal appeal."The programme of entertainment events for the Spa Cliff Lift anniversary will run from 11:00 BST to 17:00 BST between 5-6 July. Oasis reunion tour was 'closest kept secret', friend says
A friend and long-time collaborator of Oasis has said the band's reunion tour was "the closest kept secret ever" before it was Cannon designed the band's album covers for Definitely Maybe, (What's the Story) Morning Glory and Be Here Now, and also collaborated with other bands from the Britpop "Madchester" scene such as The Verve. He said despite working on the Definitely Maybe 30th anniversary project with Noel Gallagher last year, he had "no idea" the brothers had planned the reunite. "I said I would run the length of Deansgate naked if they did [get back together]. That's how convinced I was it wasn't going to happen," he told BBC Radio Manchester. Mr Cannon added: "[Noel] gave nothing away, I think about eight people knew."The 41-gig tour kicks off in Cardiff on Friday, and the gig will be the first Oasis has performed in 16 years. Mr Cannon said he met Noel while the then-unsigned musician was working as a roadie for Madchester band Inspiral Carpets. "I met him in a lift one day. [We were] talking about trainers," he said. "I met them both before I knew anything about Oasis. They were two effortlessly cool oddballs."He said after "bumping into each other at gigs" around Manchester, the brothers invited Mr Cannon to watch them play. "I put it off because I thought 'it's bound to be rubbish', because all my mates' bands are rubbish."And it blew me away, and that was it." After designing the cover for Inspiral Carpets' 1992 album Revenge of the Goldfish, Mr Cannon said Noel asked him to design Oasis's album art. Mr Cannon said he didn't think the Gallagher brothers would be feeling too much pressure ahead of the tour. "They've all played the songs before, they've all played to big crowds before," he said. "They'll take it in their stride." Listen to the best of BBC Radio Manchester on Sounds and follow BBC Manchester on Facebook, X, and Instagram. He added: "Before the Tudor Reformation, in every part of England and Wales there were places like this dedicated to creative music-making and performance."Through this research we can now learn much more about this tradition and what it meant not only for the musicians but also for the surrounding communities that shared in their art."
