Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson's ‘Marriage Story' fight scene is being used to scare wolves
An explosive argument between Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson 's characters in ' Marriage Story ' is doing what fences can't: keeping wolves away from local farms. The tense scene in the 2019 film is among several audio clips that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has been broadcasting to scare off grey wolves that have been eating livestock from farms along the West Coast, according to a recent report by the Wall Street Journal. USDA District Supervisor Paul Wolf, who introduced the method, told the WSJ that the goal is to get the wolves to fear humans. 'I need the wolves to respond and know that, hey, humans are bad,' he said. The new method uses drone cowhands and thermal cameras to shine spotlights on wolves lurking in the shadows, sounding off a loudspeaker with alarming sounds, such as the 'Marriage Story' clip. 'Marriage Story,' directed by Noah Baumbach, centers on a strained couple going through a bitter divorce and custody battle. The Academy Award-winning drama has since become known for its grueling depiction of marital struggles. Baumbach, whose partner is Sacramento native and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig, previously told Entertainment Weekly that the scene was the 'most difficult' he has ever shot in his decades-long career. The WSJ report notes that rock and heavy metal songs such as AC/DC's hit 'Thunderstruck' and Five Finger Death Punch's 'Blue on Black' have also been used to startle wolves back into the woods, helping to decrease the number of livestock deaths. The Chronicle has reached out to the USDA for more information. California has a large wolf population, with three new packs discovered in May bringing the state's total number of packs to a century-high of 10. The new families are living in parts of Northern California, including Shasta County east of Redding, central Lassen County and eastern Tehama County. The area's growing wolf population has already proven to be challenging for local ranchers. Quincy rancher Dan Greenwood previously told the Chronicle that he counted more than 25 dead cows and calves due to wolves, noting that he is 'beyond frustrated' with the situation. Others have reported that they are 'losing cattle daily.'

Netflix's Marriage Story serving as a wolf deterrent is funny, but let's not forget its a great movie too
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. In what is certainly going to be one of the odder stories you hear about today, The Wall Street Journal has reported that the United States Department of Agriculture has recently started using audio from the Netflix original movie Marriage Story (as well as other notable audio clips) to scare off wolves and protect cattle. Specifically, they are using one of the movie's most memorable scenes — an intense argument between a husband and wife in the middle of a divorce played by Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. The Marriage Story scene sees Driver's Charlie and Johansson's Nicole scream at each other and features lines like 'You'll never be happy!' and 'Every day I wake up and hope you're dead!' The reasoning behind the USDA's choosing this clip, per the WSJ, 'humans are bad' (it appears to be working too). This is undoubtedly a clever and funny solution by those at the USDA, but it does warrant mentioning that this scene, while undoubtedly the most famous from Marriage Story (it had previously been made into plenty of memes shortly after the movie's release), is just one snippet of a pretty great movie, and we shouldn't forget that. Written and directed by Noah Baumbach, Marriage Story was released in 2019 and chronicled the rough divorce proceedings of a theater director and his actress wife. In addition to Driver and Johansson, the movie stars Laura Dern, Ray Liotta, Alan Alda, Julia Hagerty and Azhy Robertson. The movie was nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Driver), Best Actress (Johansson), Best Supporting Actress (Dern), Best Original Screenplay and Best Score, winning for Best Supporting Actress. Critics loved it too, with Marriage Story being 'Certified Fresh' with an impressive 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and a permanent fixture on WTW's list of best Netflix movies. Marriage Story is some of the best work by all involved, as it shows the complex emotions of why a marriage may end and the aftermath as they try to figure out how to navigate their new reality, made all the more difficult with them sharing a kid. Scenes like the fight will put you through the emotional ringer, but there are also moments of sincerity and levity that remind you of the love that was once there and is at times still there. Because Marriage Story has never left Netflix, it can often get buried under the slew of new Netflix original movies and TV shows (recent examples include Happy Gilmore 2, My Oxford Year and, this week, Wednesday season 2). Marriage Story isn't typically popping up in the Top 10 because there hasn't been anything new about it to grab subscribers attention. Maybe this USDA story will change that and give Marriage Story some new life on Netflix. Wolves may not like it, but Marriage Story is a wonderfully performed, powerful human story that deserves to be recalled as the great movie that it is. Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver Fighting in ‘Marriage Story' Is Being Used by the USDA to Scare Off Wolves and Save Cattle: ‘They Need to Know Humans Are Bad'
A new report from The Wall Street Journal reveals that audio of Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver screaming at each other in Noah Baumbach's 'Marriage Story' is being used by the United States Department of Agriculture to scare off wolves from killing cattle and scaring livestock on farms across the America. The fight scene is the most emotionally volatile moment in Baumbach's 2019 drama, which earned both Johansson and Driver Oscar nominations. Per the WSJ: 'Riding to the rescue are drone cowhands, whose quadcopters have thermal cameras that can reveal any wolf lurking in the darkness and bathe it in a spotlight. A loudspeaker broadcasts alarming sounds like fireworks, gunshots and people arguing. One recording is of the fight between Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver in the movie 'Marriage Story.'' 'Wolf hazing,' as the practice is called, also uses loud music like AC/DC's 'Thunderstruck' to scare off deadly wolves. The USDA has relied on drones because gray wolves had long been on the federal government's list of endangered species. The process seems to be working. As the WSJ reported: 'Drones were deployed in the Klamath Basin of southern Oregon after 11 cows were killed by wolves there in a 20-day period. Over the next 85 days when drones were on patrol, only two were killed.' 'Marriage Story' stars Johansson and Driver as a couple going through a bitter divorce and custody battle over their son. The movie earned critical acclaim after premiering at the 2019 Venice Film Festival. Variety's Owen Gleiberman named 'Marriage Story' the second best movie of 2019. 'Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, in spectacular performances that work together with searing intimacy, enact the anger, pride, despair, and passion of a couple who tear their relationship apart, and their souls too, even as they both struggle to remain whole inside,' Gleiberman wrote. ''Marriage Story' tells the story of divorce in our time, and in doing so it earns a place next to those harrowing and heartrending texts of separation, 'Kramer vs. Kramer' and 'Scenes from a Marriage.''
