Here Are the 2025 Primetime Emmy Nominees in All 7 Music Categories: Full List
Kendrick Lamar and Ahmir 'Questlove' Thompson are among the 2025 Primetime Emmy nominees for outstanding music direction. Lamar is nominated for The Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show Starring Kendrick Lamar, alongside co-nominee Tony Russell. Questlove is nominated for SNL50: The Homecoming Concert, alongside co-nominee James Poyser. The other nominees in the category are Rickey Minor for The Kennedy Center Honors; Michael Bearden for The Oscars; and Lenny Pickett, Leon Pendarvis, Eli Brueggemann for SNL50: The Anniversary Special. He's nominated for his work on The Studio, The White Lotus and The Righteous Gemstones (the latter alongside DeVoe Yates). Ariel Marx had two of the six nominations for outstanding music composition for a limited or anthology series, movie or special. He's nominated for his work on both Black Mirror and Dying for Sex. Cristobal Tapia de Veer received two nominations in different categories for his work on The White Lotus. Two SNL alums are competing for outstanding original music and lyrics. Adam Sandler is nominated for 'Adam Sandler's Song: 50 Years,' which he co-wrote with Dan Bulla for SNL50: The Anniversary Special. Kristen Wiig is competing with 'Harper and Will Go West,' which she cowrote with Sean Douglas and Josh Greenbaum for Harper and Will Go West. The latter song was shortlisted for an Oscar for best original song late last year, but wasn't nominated. Thomas Newman and Julia Newman share a nomination for outstanding music composition for a limited or anthology series, movie or special for their work on Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Thomas is Julia's father. This is the first time he has collaborated with another composer in writing a score. Thomas and Julia collaborated last year on Feud: Capote vs. the Swans in which he wrote the main title theme and Julia wrote the original music for each episode of the series. For Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, they wrote the music for each episode together. First-round voting in the Primetime Emmys runs from Aug. 18 to 27. The Creative Arts Emmys will be will be presented over two nights, Saturday, Sept. 6, and Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live. Highlights from the two ceremonies will air Saturday, Sept. 13, at 8 p.m. PT on FXX. The Primetime Emmys will be telecast live coast-to-coast on Sunday, Sept. 14, from 8 to 11 p.m. ET on CBS and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+. Comedian Nate Bargatze is hosting for the first time. ‘SNL50' Helps NBC Show To Record Haul
Saturday Night Live has just scored its most Emmy nominations ever, with a couple of caveats. The NBC show and its various spinoffs around its 50th anniversary landed 31 nominations. Its previous best ever haul was in 2017 with 22 nominations. It also scored two for Questlove's Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music and three for SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night Live as well as one for an immersive special. It will go head-to-head, once again, against Last Week Tonight with John Oliver in the Outstanding Scripted Variety Series category, which has its own special voting rules given the number of nominees. In 2015, the Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special, also known as SNL40, picked up seven nominations and won the Outstanding Variety Special award, beating Bill Maher: Live From D.C., The Kennedy Center Honors, Louis C.K: Live At The Comedy Store, Mel Brooks: Live at the Geffen and Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga: Cheek to Cheek Live! Don Roy King also won for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special and the show won a makeup award. That year, SNL totaled 15 Emmy nominations across its main show – with noms for Kate McKinnon, Louis C.K and Bill Hader as well as in Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, losing out to Inside Amy Schumer – and its 40th anniversary. Last year, Saturday Night Live scored 17 nominations and won six awards in the technical categories such as directing, production design, makeup, hairstyling, lighting design and technical design and camerawork. It lost out to Last Week Tonight with John Oliver in the main Outstanding Scripted Variety Series category, while stars and hosts such as Kristen Wiig, Bowen Yang, Ryan Gosling and Maya Rudolph were nominated in various categories but also lost out. This was, however, well up from the previous year, when the show received only nine nominations and only two wins. Olivia Munn developed trichotillomania over a paparazzi shot. The 44-year-old actress suffers from the disorder that causes a long-term urge to pull out one's own hair and has always "immediately regretted" doing so but admitted that it all came from the first time she was in the tabloids with then-boyfriend Chris Pine. Speaking on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast, she said: "There's a sensation. It's probably not even real, but I'll feel like, 'Oh, this eyelash feels like it's gonna come out,' even though it's not. "And then when you pull it, there was a quick second of pain. And then there's a satisfaction and then immediate regret. "So there was a paparazzi shot of him and I, and it was the first time I was in the tabloids. The former Newsroom star — who is now married to John Mulaney and has Malcolm, three, as well as nine-month-old Mei with him — was shocked at the time because friends thought she had set the whole thing up herself. "They found this old blue prom dress with big pom poms on the side. And I was like, 'Oh, wonder if I can make it into the worst best dressed list? "There were paparazzi outside his house because he had been in Star Trek and all this. And they caught photos of me. I was like, 'Oh my god.' And when it got out, one of my friends was like, 'Hey, you're dating Chris Pine.' "And they were like, 'I think she set this up. Who's carrying a clutch during the day?' "That began my trichotillomania." Olivia — who dated Chris for months from 2009 until 2010 — confirmed that she is still in touch with him, and had a "great" time with him when they caught up with one another recently. Amy Poehler Says ‘SNL' Actors ‘All Played People We Should Not Have… I Misappropriated, I Appropriated': Everything in Comedy Has an ‘Expiration Date'
Amy Poehler recently took accountability for her problematic 'Saturday Night Live' characters while talking to former cast member Will Forte on her 'Good Hang' podcast. Poehler said that every comedian who has appeared on 'SNL' over the years has 'played people that we should not have played' and 'the part about getting older and being in comedy is you have to, like, figure out, 'Oh, it's like everything has an expiration date.'' 'There was even on ['SNL50'], when they had that segment which was like, 'Here's all the ways we got things wrong,' and they showed way inappropriate casting for people,' Poehler added. 'We all played people that we should not have played. I misappropriated, I appropriated…I didn't know.' 'Even though these characters, accents and … let's just call them 'ethnic' wigs were unquestionably in poor taste, you all laughed at them,' Tom Hanks said in a winking moment at the audience. 'So if anyone should be canceled, shouldn't it be you, the audience? Something to think about.' Speaking to Forte on her podcast, Poehler added: 'The best thing you can do is make repairs, learn from your mistakes, do better. It's all you can do.'
