TDP, BJP leaders submit memoranda to CEO on strengthening the electoral process
They made 13 suggestions for ensuring free, fair and transparent elections, which were the cornerstone of a vibrant democracy.
Some of the important suggestions were to advise the Booth-Level Agents (BLAs) and Booth-Level Officers (BLOs) to gather information related to deaths from the local bodies at prescribed intervals and update the voters' list accordingly, avoid the 'zero door number' system, and adopt a permanent methodology that sorts out the inconsistencies thereof. They also suggested that a family residing in the same door number / premises should be allotted the same polling station and that better amenities be provided to the Returning Officers by allowing them to take private premises like schools, colleges and halls, and devise a separate mechanism using the present technology for deleting duplicate votes.
Further, the TDP leaders also recommended that extra time be given to cast votes to make up for the time lost due to the malfunctioning of the EVMs, the size of the parties' symbols in the VVPAT devices should be increased. They also sought that the involvement of youth in the voting process should be increased by spreading awareness about the importance of getting themselves enrolled as and when they attain 18 years of age. Further, they sought facilities to the elderly, differently-abled persons, and pregnant women to avoid inconvenience, and that a photo revision programme be taken up at fixed intervals.
A BJP delegation, comprising K. Dileep and U. Srinivasa Raju, requested the CEO to strengthen the BLO training and monitoring, use GIS tools for rationalising polling stations, fully adopt ERONet across districts, do real-time syncing of data with death and migration records, strictly adhere to the Representation of People Act, implement the SVEEP programme in low registration areas, and make schools / colleges as voter enrollment hubs.

Women candidates can use both maiden and married names on EVMs: Maharashtra SEC
1 2 Pune: The State Election Commission (SEC) has allowed women candidates to display both their pre-marriage (maiden) and post-marriage names on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), provided they formally request it and meet the eligibility criteria, senior officials told TOI over the weekend. The directive, issued ahead of the upcoming local body elections in the state, is expected to benefit women known in public life by both names. But officials clarified that the name on the nomination form must match the name in the voters' list. Once the nomination is submitted, candidates may file an application with the returning officer requesting both names appear on the EVM. The application must be filed before the final date of withdrawal of candidature, the SEC stated. To support the request, candidates will need to submit a marriage certificate or a govt-issued gazette notification confirming the name change. In the absence of a gazette, one of 17 acceptable proofs — as prescribed by the SEC in a 2011 order — may be submitted. However, the official added that both names will appear in full on the EVM only if space permits. Maharashtra has reserved 50% of seats for women - in municipal corporations, councils, nagar panchayats, zilla parishads and panchayat samitis. Of these, over 1,370 seats in municipal corporations and 3,885 seats in councils and nagar panchayats have been set aside for women candidates. Civil society groups and political observers welcomed SEC's decision. "This is a progressive step. In many Maharashtrian households, a woman's name changes completely after marriage. Allowing both names helps her preserve her identity," said a political analyst. A former PMC corporator said it would help women who are known by their maiden names in the area, and putting both names would be an advantage for them. "Since the SEC has announced it much ahead of the actual polls, I would consider giving all the documents to ensure that both my maiden name and the name post-marriage are included," the former corporator told TOI. The state is set for one of the biggest rounds of local body elections, covering 29 municipal corporations, 244 municipal councils, 147 nagar panchayats, 32 zilla parishads, and 336 panchayat samitis.

YSRCP accuses Andhra govt of large-scale land irregularities in Vizag
Visakhapatnam, Jul 27 (PTI) YSRCP leader and former minister Gudivada Amarnath on Sunday accused the TDP-led coalition government of 'large-scale land irregularities" and said it was behaving like a 'real estate agency" while allotting public lands to associates, firms and realtors at 'unjustifiably" low prices here. He alleged that the state government diverted prime land to newly incorporated firms with no credentials, undermining previous IT development plans initiated under the YSRCP regime. 'The TDP-led coalition government has committed massive irregularities in land allocations in Visakhapatnam since the government was formed," Amarnath said while addressing a press conference. He alleged that private companies received valuable land at rates as low as Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore per acre, calling it a 'quid pro quo'. He noted the land deals had created no IT jobs for Andhra's youth. The former minister further alleged that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and IT Minister Nara Lokesh were directly overseeing these land deals, and that public land was being 'looted" to benefit their associates. The YSRCP leader linked Naidu's frequent visits to Singapore to alleged corruption and old ties with tainted individuals there. Amarnath said that the YSRCP would launch a mass movement against the land scam and hold the Naidu-led coalition government accountable for allegedly diverting public wealth for private gains.
