College football star allegedly shot dead by former student athlete while visiting home for Mother's Day weekend
Nathaniel Bernard Jennings, 19, was gunned down in Downtown Melbourne after police said he got into an argument with suspect Stephan Dieujuste, 24, near Neon Rodeo bar on Saturday at around 1:50 a.m., Florida Today reported.
Melbourne Police and Fire Rescue quickly responded to the scene, where they found Jennings — a freshman defensive lineman for the University of Northwestern, St. Paul — unresponsive.

He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was declared dead.
Dieujuste, a former Eastern Florida State College point guard, was questioned by police at the scene and claimed the shooting was in self-defense.
The former college basketball player was later arrested and charged with manslaughter. He is currently being held at the Brevard County Jail Complex.
The shooting was captured on newly installed downtown surveillance cameras, city officials confirmed to Florida Today.
Police are still investigating what sparked the argument between the two men.

It's also unclear if Jennings, a graduate of Heritage High School, and Dieujuste, a graduate of Bayside High School, knew each other.
'It is an active investigation,' a spokesperson for the Melbourne Police Department, Lt. Bradley Blount, told Florida Today.
After news broke of the star defense lineman's death, the head football coach at the University of Northwestern, Matt Moore, released a statement praising Jenning's character on and off the gridiron.

'Nate was a treasured member of our football team, being honored with all-conference accolades following his first year of collegiate competition,' Moore said, according to WESH 2.
'For as talented as Nate was on the football field, he was an even better person off of it. His contagious energy and positivity will be missed. We are praying for Nate's mother, Autumn, brother Isaiah, and other members of his extended family during this difficult time.'
The rising college football star finished his freshman season at Northwestern with 55 total tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and one fumble recovery.

Jennings' death is the first reported homicide in Melbourne this year, according to city crime statistics. It is also only the second homicide to happen in the downtown area in the last two years.
Randy Bennett — a bar owner who's worked downtown for nearly a decade — said the shooting happened in front of the business next to his, and his staff was working when the 'whole thing went down.'
'Downtown is beautiful, it's safe, people aren't getting their stuff stolen,' Bennett told WESH 2. 'This was an isolated incident by a couple people who decided to take it into their own hands instead of buying each other a beer.'
'Very upsetting because this is a nice place to come,' local resident Linda Bouley told the outlet.
'I'm glad they found the [suspect]. It doesn't really give me relief because it's like why did this happen? Why is a 19-year-old getting shot? Why does somebody have a gun out here where this is supposed to be an area that you just come to enjoy yourself.'
Dieujuste made his initial court appearance on Monday and was ordered held without bond, court records show.
His next court appearance has been set for June 5.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings is looking for an extension or a trade, according to a league source. Jennings, 28, is set to make $7.5 million in the final year of his existing contract. With Brandon Aiyuk still rehabbing an ACL and MCL tear in his right knee that he suffered in October and likely to be listed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list at the start of the season, Jennings is expected to be the team's top receiver. In 15 games and 10 starts, Jennings made 77 catches for 975 yards and six touchdowns in a breakout 2024 campaign that followed three prior seasons in which he started only seven games combined and accrued no more than 416 receiving yards in any season. Jennings signed a two-year, $15.39 million contract extension last offseason. If an agreement is not reached by the time veterans are required to report to training camp next Tuesday, he intends to request a trade. He is not expected to be a camp holdout. When Jennings finished merely 25 yards shy of a 1,000-yard season in his first extended playing time, his market value has inevitably surged, setting the stage for his attempt to capitalize on such leverage with Aiyuk's timeline still in limbo. Funeral director killed pallbearer at child's burial, MD cops say. He's sentenced
A Maryland funeral director fatally shot a pallbearer at a 10-year-old girl's burial when an argument unfolded during the service, authorities said. Now, Wilson Chavis, 50, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison, 'suspending all but 25 years,' in the killing of 30-year-old Ronald Banks, according to a July 11 news release from the Prince George's County Office of the State's Attorney. Information on Chavis' legal representation was not immediately available. 'This was an unthinkable tragedy — one that has caused immeasurable pain to multiple families,' State's Attorney Tara Jackson said in a statement. 'What these families and this community had to experience is something that should never happen.' Banks was shot by Chavis while working as a pallbearer for Arianna Davis at the Washington National Cemetery in Suitland on June 6, 2023, according to officials. The shooting was related to a 'long-standing business dispute' and sent Banks to a hospital, where he died of his injuries shortly afterward, Prince George's County Police Department said at the time, McClatchy News previously reported. As the girl's funeral was about to begin, Chavis confronted Banks and another woman, according to police, who said the individuals were both affiliated with a funeral service company Chavis had a history of disputing with. During the confrontation, Chavis fired two shots, police said. One hit Banks, while the other shot grazed the woman, who was not identified. The girl, Arianna, was killed nearly a month earlier when a stray bullet struck her May 14, on Mother's Day, in Washington, D.C., according to 7News 'I'm so traumatized that this happened at my daughter's burial site,' Antionette Belk, the girl's mother, told NBC4 Washington in June 2023. 'I didn't even get to lay her down, even to put her in the ground, and another incident happened.' Chavis' sentencing was held July 11, after he was convicted of second-degree murder, the use of a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence and reckless endangerment on Feb. 14, according to the state's attorney's office. 'Our hearts remain with the families that have suffered because of this tragic incident, and we remain committed to ensuring that those who commit such violent acts are held fully accountable,' Jackson said.
