Funeral director killed pallbearer at child's burial, MD cops say. He's sentenced
Now, Wilson Chavis, 50, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison, 'suspending all but 25 years,' in the killing of 30-year-old Ronald Banks, according to a July 11 news release from the Prince George's County Office of the State's Attorney.
Information on Chavis' legal representation was not immediately available.
'This was an unthinkable tragedy — one that has caused immeasurable pain to multiple families,' State's Attorney Tara Jackson said in a statement. 'What these families and this community had to experience is something that should never happen.'
Banks was shot by Chavis while working as a pallbearer for Arianna Davis at the Washington National Cemetery in Suitland on June 6, 2023, according to officials.
The shooting was related to a 'long-standing business dispute' and sent Banks to a hospital, where he died of his injuries shortly afterward, Prince George's County Police Department said at the time, McClatchy News previously reported.
As the girl's funeral was about to begin, Chavis confronted Banks and another woman, according to police, who said the individuals were both affiliated with a funeral service company Chavis had a history of disputing with.
During the confrontation, Chavis fired two shots, police said. One hit Banks, while the other shot grazed the woman, who was not identified.
The girl, Arianna, was killed nearly a month earlier when a stray bullet struck her May 14, on Mother's Day, in Washington, D.C., according to 7News
'I'm so traumatized that this happened at my daughter's burial site,' Antionette Belk, the girl's mother, told NBC4 Washington in June 2023. 'I didn't even get to lay her down, even to put her in the ground, and another incident happened.'
Chavis' sentencing was held July 11, after he was convicted of second-degree murder, the use of a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence and reckless endangerment on Feb. 14, according to the state's attorney's office.
'Our hearts remain with the families that have suffered because of this tragic incident, and we remain committed to ensuring that those who commit such violent acts are held fully accountable,' Jackson said.

Five Western Massachusetts teens were arrested Saturday after a car chase between police and a stolen car ended with the stolen car crashing with two others on I-91 in West Springfield, Holyoke police announced Monday. The car chase began after a Holyoke police sergeant noticed a car that had been reported stolen driving around the city with five people inside, Holyoke police said in a press release. The sergeant tried to pull over the stolen car as it went into the Holyoke Mall parking lot, but the driver accelerated and crashed through two wooden barriers around a construction zone. The stolen car continued onto I-91 south and tried to get off at an exit, but it collided with another vehicle, which led to a third vehicle being struck, police said. All five people in the stolen car ran into the woods following the crash. The sergeant checked on the people in the other two vehicles and then began searching for the suspects, police said. West Springfield police located all five of the suspects: an 18-year-old Chicopee man, a male 17-year-old from Holyoke, a 15-year-old Springfield girl, a 14-year-old Pittsfield girl and a 24-year-old Springfield woman, police said. They arrested the 17-year-old, 15-year-old and 14-year-old, who declined a medical evaluation, and the 18-year-old and 24-year-old were taken to Baystate Medical Center with injuries but are being charged with receiving a stolen vehicle. The investigation into the incident indicated that the 17-year-old was driving the stolen car during the car chase, police said. Holyoke police did not identify any of the suspects. DNA cracks 2011 cold case killing that involved sex for money, NJ officials say
More than a decade after a man was fatally stabbed inside an abandoned home, DNA has led to a break in his case, New Jersey prosecutors say. Kenyar Hill, 46, was charged with first-degree murder in the 2011 slaying of Brian Holden, 42, of Camden, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office said in a July 10 news release. An attorney representing Hill did not immediately respond to McClatchy News' request for comment on July 14. Camden City police responded to a report of a stabbing at an abandoned Camden home just before 10 p.m. on Oct. 11, 2011, prosecutors said. When first responders arrived, they found Holden 'lying in the front room' with multiple stab wounds, prosecutors said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, prosecutors said. While investigating his death, detectives spoke with Holden's girlfriend, according to prosecutors. She told detectives she met with a man earlier in the evening and 'agreed to have sexual intercourse with him for money,' prosecutors said. Afterward, she said they started arguing, 'and he took his money back,' prosecutors said. The girlfriend said she yelled for Holden, then he confronted the man, prosecutors said. An altercation ensued and Holden was stabbed multiple times, prosecutors said. The girlfriend underwent 'a sexual assault forensic examination' at a hospital and DNA evidence was collected, prosecutors said. Investigators submitted the evidence to the New Jersey State Police laboratory; however, at the time, there were no hits in the Combined DNA Index System, according to prosecutors. CODIS is 'a computer software program that operates local, state, and national databases of DNA profiles from convicted offenders, unsolved crime scene evidence, and missing persons,' according to federal prosecutors. Eleven years later, there was a 'high stringency match' in CODIS, identifying Hill as a potential suspect in the 2011 cold case, prosecutors said. To confirm the match, detectives collected a DNA swab from Hill and submitted it for testing, along with the original swabs from the sexual assault kit, prosecutors said. Hill's DNA matched that of the DNA profile from the sexual assault examination, according to prosecutors. 'After receiving the DNA results, detectives continued to follow up on the investigation, including locating witnesses from more than a decade ago,' prosecutors said. This led detectives to identify Hill as a suspect in Holden's death, prosecutors said, adding that he was arrested June 27. Camden is about a 5-mile drive east from Center City Philadelphia.
