FB post: HC initiates contempt proceedings against ex-MLA
Justice D K Singh directed the HC registry to issue notice to Rajesh to appear before court at 10.15am on July 23. The bench framed the charges against the alleged contemnor and instructed the registry to place the case before the appropriate bench, based on the orders of the Chief Justice.
The alleged FB post, dated July 6, begins with the line: "It is the goddess of justice who sits in the high court, not a woman holding a saffron flag."
HC, in its order, held that the remarks prima facie amount to interference with the administration of justice and scandalising the court. It observed that Rajesh had not merely criticised a judgment but had instead levelled serious accusations against the judges themselves, alleging that the bench hearing university-related matters is headed by staunch Sangh Parivar supporters.
HC stated that such language amounts to scandalising the court and maligning the reputation of judges.

In strong terms, the Court observed: "If the court allows any deviation or distraction in the name of convenience, harmony, smooth functioning or such other clumsy pretext, it will do more harm to the system. It is the duty of the court to stand in such a situation to maintain the majesty, honour and independence of the institution of justice, instead of surrendering to the individual interest of anybody, whatsoever, in the name of sympathy, leniency, compassion, forgiveness, etc.
"
The court further emphasised that no individual, including a public figure, can be permitted to make insinuations or allegations against judges in a manner that erodes public faith in the judiciary: "The alleged contemnor has made wild and unsubstantiated allegations through his Facebook post, thereby lowering the prestige and majesty of the courts in the eyes of the general public," HC said.

Shocking poll shows majority of Canadians now see America as a threat
More Canadians than ever before now view the United States as a top threat to their country, even as many still consider it Canada 's most important ally. A new global survey by the Pew Research Center shows 59 percent of Canadians believe the US poses a threat, up sharply from just 20 percent in 2019. At the same time, 55 percent still call the US their closest ally, highlighting the complicated emotions many Canadians feel about their powerful neighbor to the south. 'Canada stands out. The change in views toward the US here has been significant,' said Janell Fetterolf, senior researcher at Pew. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Build Your Dream Villa Near Bengaluru Airport Sumadhura Group Learn More Undo With US President Donald Trump pushing new tariffs and hinting at annexation rhetoric, even suggesting Canada could become a US state, Canadians are feeling uneasy. Economic friction and fear Live Events Canada was an early target of Trump's aggressive trade tactics. He imposed steel and aluminum tariffs tied to fentanyl trafficking concerns in March, then rolled them back days later for goods meeting the Canada-US-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) terms. He also floated massive tariffs on copper (50 percent) and pharmaceuticals (200 percent). A July 21 deadline looms for finalizing a new Canada-US economic and security agreement. If no deal is reached, Ottawa has warned it will respond with counter-tariffs, possibly hitting the auto sector, a move the Canadian Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association strongly opposes. 'Counter-tariffs hurt Canadian jobs too,' the association said in a statement. Views shift across the globe Pew's study, conducted across 24 countries from January to April, shows the US was labeled a top economic threat by many. Russia was named the top security threat in Europe, while China was seen as both across the Asia-Pacific region. In Canada, 75 percent said the US is an economic threat, and 53 percent said it's a national security threat. Meanwhile, Americans remain largely positive about Canada, with 74 percent holding a favorable view, according to a separate Pew poll conducted in March. What's next? Prime Minister Mark Carney has walked a diplomatic tightrope. He's emphasized trade diversification, increased defense spending to reassure allies, and avoided confrontation with Trump at last month's G7 summit in Calgary. Canada and the US share the world's longest border, deep economic ties, and cultural connections, but more Canadians now wonder if a best friend can also be a threat.

Asian stocks cautious as tariff talk sinks copper
Asian shares opened cautiously as investors held back from taking risky bets after President Donald Trump ruled out extending his August deadline. Copper futures fell on Trump's tariff threat. Shares in Japan rose and those in Australia fell while a broader gauge of Asian shares dipped 0.1%. Benchmark copper futures fell in London after Trump said he planned to implement a 50% tariff on imports, a move that's likely to spark further upheaval in global metal markets . US copper prices had a record gain in the last session on Trump's remarks. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like When the Camera Clicked at the Worst Possible Time Read More Undo Trump signaled a renewed determination to push ahead with his plans to heavily tax foreign imports. He also told reporters that despite progress with the European Union on a trade deal, frustration over the bloc's taxes and fines targeting US technology firms could result in him unilaterally declaring a new tariff rate within the next two days. 'The market's response to this week's barrage of tariff headlines has been one of indifference, having absorbed the lessons of Liberation Day, where timelines were extended, levy rates were reduced, and trade deals were brokered,' said Tony Sycamore, a market analyst at IG Australia. 'This indifference is expected to continue until either the hard economic data starts to turn lower or inflation spikes higher.' Trump vowed to push forward with his aggressive tariff regime in the coming days, stressing he would not offer additional extensions on country-specific levies set to now hit in early August while indicating he could announce substantial new rates on imports of copper and pharmaceuticals. Live Events The posturing on social media and at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday came after traders initially shrugged off a series of letters and executive actions Trump issued Monday, pushing back the deadline for his so-called 'reciprocal' tariffs while announcing the latest rates he planned for more than a dozen countries that had not succeeded in brokering quick trade agreements. 'While tariffs will likely remain high — compared with levels at the start of the year — as will the headline risk, we think the US effective tariff rate should end the year at around 15%,' said Ulrike Hoffmann-Burchardi at UBS Global Wealth Management. 'This would be a headwind to growth but not enough to trigger a recession.' She continued to recommend phasing into global equities or diversified portfolios to navigate volatility ahead.
