Militants kill 5 soldiers in attacks on two Nigerian bases — security sources
Nigeria, which has grappled with an Islamist insurgency for more than 15 years, this year witnessed a surge in attacks by Boko Haram and its offshoot Islamic State West Africa Province in Borno, the heartland of the militants.
Two soldiers from the 24 Task Force Brigade in Borno's Dikwa district said militants flew two surveillance drones in the vicinity before attacking the brigade's base in the early hours of Tuesday.
The base also housed troops from 153 Battalion in nearby Marte district, which was attacked on Monday with at least five soldiers killed.
Nigeria's Defence Headquarters, which co-ordinates the anti-insurgency operation, did not respond to a request for comment.

The musician, known as 3GAR Baby, is expected to appear in a Cape Town court soon for crashing his luxury supercar at high speed. It's believed that the Nigerian rapper, whose real name is Prince Daniel Obioma, was driving at over 200km/h when he lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a pavement on High Level Road on 1 March. Photos of him with blood gushing down his face circulated on social media shortly after the crash. Gotsell said the wheels of justice were finally turning after months of pressure on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to investigate the matter. "Over the past months, Cape Town and surrounds have been plagued by serious incidents involving luxury vehicles. Nobody, not even a so-called celebrity, is above the law." It's understood that a passenger was also injured in the accident.

Gotsell stated he wrote twice to Western Cape Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile to seek clarity on the case. 'The response was non-committal and said that he cannot offer a timeline on when it will be completed.' He questioned why a case backed by visual evidence remained unresolved, particularly at a station like Sea Point, which he noted does not face the same caseload as other precincts in the province. 'My response to him was that Sea Point police station is not nearly as busy as other stations in the Western Cape, and therefore I find it strange that an investigation like this has not delivered any decisions in two months.' Gotsell said the matter highlighted a broader problem with how authorities respond to reckless driving in Cape Town. 'There must be consequences, not just to hold this individual accountable, but to send a clear message: reckless driving endangers lives, and no amount of fame or fanfare will place you above the law.' He previously criticised the public response, saying Obioma had continued to build an online persona while avoiding accountability. 'The rapper who crashed the McLaren continues to reinvent himself online, now boasting about his other car, fortunately, an SUV,' Gotsell said.
