Ambedkar hosp carries out 5th rare heart surgery
Advanced Cardiac Institute
of state-run
Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital
achieved a significant feat by successfully performing its fifth consecutive surgery for
Ebstein's Anomaly
, a rare congenital heart defect. This accomplishment positions
Ambedkar Hospital
as the first cardiac centre, both govt and private, in the state to reach this milestone. The medical team, led by heart surgeon and department head Dr Krishnakant Sahu, operated on a 36-year-old female patient whose left ventricle was functioning at a severely reduced capacity of 20%.
Despite the surgery's global success rate being less than 10%, the patient fully recovered and was discharged without requiring a permanent pacemaker, which is typically needed in nearly 50% of such cases.
Dr Sahu explained that the patient experienced symptoms such as breathlessness, a very rapid heartbeat, and frequent fainting spells. Ebstein's Anomaly involves a malformed tricuspid valve and an underdeveloped right ventricle, leading to impaired heart function. Statistically, 13% of affected infants do not survive birth, and most others do not live beyond 25 to 30 years without surgical intervention. This condition, known as atrialization of the right ventricle, significantly restricts heart function and often leads to heart failure or arrhythmias. The procedure faced delays due to a temporary shortage of surgical supplies. However, following the restoration of supplies, four open-heart surgeries were completed in the last week alone.

CG team performs rare angioplasty after pvt hosp fails
Raipur: Cardiologists and their team at the Advanced Cardiac Institute (ACI), located at Pt Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Medical College and Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, achieved a milestone at the national level. They successfully performed angioplasty using Excimer Laser Coronary Angioplasty (ELCA) on a 70-year-old patient after a private hospital procedure failed, said the hospital spokesperson. For the first time, a live demonstration of this procedure was witnessed by cardiologists from Jabalpur and other parts of the country. The virtual live workshop once again earned Chhattisgarh recognition at the national level in the healthcare sector. The workshop was conducted under the leadership of Dr Smit Srivastava, head of the cardiology department. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo Excimer Laser Coronary Angioplasty (ELCA) is a specialised type of angioplasty that uses a laser to remove blockages (plaque, thrombus) from the coronary arteries. It is used in cases where traditional balloon angioplasty or stenting is insufficient. Dr Smit Srivastava stated that a 73-year-old patient had a blockage in the right coronary artery. A private hospital attempted angioplasty, but the procedure was unsuccessful. Considering the patient's condition, doctors suggested Excimer Laser Coronary Angioplasty (ELCA) to break down the calcium and perform angioplasty. Dr Smit said that the Cardiological Society of India's conference was held in Jabalpur. At their request, the team contributed to the workshop's success by providing a live demonstration, which received appreciation.
