Blazers' Jrue Holiday gives love to former Sixers star Andre Iguodala

USA Today6 days ago
Before being traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in the offseason, Jrue Holiday carved out a role as defensive star in this league. He began his career with the Philadelphia 76ers as the No. 17 pick in the 2009 draft and became an All-Star for Philadelphia in 2013 before being sent to the New Orleans Pelicans to kick off "The Process" era.
Holiday then morphed into a defensive menace in New Orleans and helping the Pelicans win a playoff series in 2018 before being sent to the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2020 offseason. He won a title with the Bucks in 2021 and then with the Boston Celtics in 2024 before then being sent to the Blazers.
Now in more of a mentorship role at this stage of his career, Holiday was asked about any veteran player helping mentor him at the beginning of his time in the league. He immediately gave a shoutout to former Sixers star Andre Iguodala as well as a couple of other former Sixers teammates:
One was Andre Iguodala. He was a jerk. My rookie year, he was on me. He was on me about a lot, and I didn't really understand why until later. He obviously saw something in me that I guess I hadn't seen yet, and just constantly being on me and harping on me about being consistent and the things that I have to do were super important. I had Elton Brand, who, I think everybody knows Elton Brand's game, and his career has been amazing, and what he's doing in Philly. Also had Aaron McKie as a coach, so he was kind of like my player coach, who really instilled in me a lot of hard work, and because we were the same position, he coached me up a lot on how to be solid as not just as a player, but as a human, and kind of how that translates on and off the court.
Holiday will look to help the Blazers make a push up in the standings after a few tough seasons in the midst of a rebuild. Portland showed some signs late in the 2024-25 season of turning it around and Holiday will look to help give another nudge to a team that hasn't reached the playoffs since 2021.

Brooklyn Nets jersey history No. 21 - LaMarcus Aldridge (2021-22)

The Brooklyn Nets have 52 jersey numbers worn by over 600 different players over the course of their history since the franchise was founded in 1967 as a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA), when the team was known as the "New Jersey Americans". Since then, that league has been absorbed by the NBA with the team that would later become the New York Nets and New Jersey Nets before settling on the name by which they are known today, bringing their rich player and jersey history with them to the league of today. To commemorate the players who played for the Nets over the decades wearing those 52 different jersey numbers, Nets Wire is covering the entire history of the franchise's jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. The 22nd of those 52 different numbers is jersey No. 21, which has has had a total of 26 players wear the number in the history of the team. The 23rd of those players wearing No. 21 played in the Brooklyn Nets era, big man alum LaMarcus Aldridge. After ending his college career at Texas, Aldridge was picked up with the second overall selection of the 2006 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls. The Dallas, Texas native would play the first nine seasons of his pro career with the Portland Trail Blazers instead after a draft night deal. He would also play for the San Antonio Spurs before he signed with Brooklyn in 2021 for the final two seasons of his NBA career. During his time suiting up for the Nets, Aldridge wore only jersey No. 21 and put up 12.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks per game. All stats and data courtesy of Basketball Reference. Which free agency addition will make the biggest impact for Sixers?

The Philadelphia 76ers were quiet in the free agency market in 2025 after a big spending spree in 2024. The goal for President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey was working on making sure the team got younger as well as add players who can provide legitimate depth and versatility. In terms of the additions for the Sixers, they added the versatile Trendon Watford as well as two young big men in Jabari Walker and Dominick Barlow who can produce right away on two-way deals. The Sixers getting either player on a two-way deal is a steal when considering they're both NBA rotational player. The question for the Sixers now is which of those three will make the biggest impact? Jabari Walker 2024-25 stats: 5.2 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 0.6 apg, 0.6 spg, 51.5% FG, 38.9% 3FG Walker progressed in a big way in 2024-25. He shot 38.9% from deep on 1.2 attempts per game, and per Cleaning the Glass, shot 53% on corner 3s. He took a big leap forward in the 3-point shooting department and was able to take steps forward in the pick-and-roll/pick-and-pop game as well. He is also a more than solid offensive rebounder as he averaged 1.4 offensive rebounds per game in his three seasons with Portland. Offensive rebounding is an important skill and Walker brings that to Philadelphia. If he can continue building a reliable jumper, then he will have a permanent spot in this team's rotation. Dominick Barlow 2024-25 stats: 4.2 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 0.5 apg, 0.5 bpg, 53.1% FG Signed to a two-way and then playing for the Sixers in the summer league, Barlow was able to produce some good numbers at 13.5 points and 7.0 rebounds. Specifically, he averaged 4.0 offensive rebounds per game in Vegas. The Sixers always need some help in that department and with somebody like Barlow who is bouncy, athletic, and relentless on the glass, they can rely on him to be a backup to Joel Embiid at times. While on a two-way deal, one can assume he will spend a lot of time in the G League, but when the Sixers need some young legs to turn to in the dog days of the season in January and February, Barlow will take on a bigger role. Trendon Watford 2024-25 stats: 10.2 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 2.6 apg, 0.6 spg, 46.9% FG, 33% 3FG Watford uses his size and strength to put the ball on the floor and convert on herky-jerky looks at the basket to make an impact with his scoring. For example, he scored 18 points on 7-for-8 shooting--all 2-point attempts--in a win over the Sixers on Feb. 12. An underrated area of his game is his playmaking ability. Per Cleaning the Glass, Watford had a 21.1% assist percentage in 2024-25 which stands in the 92nd percentile. The 2.6 assists he averaged for the Nets were a career high for him and a number that he can continue to grow in Philadelphia with the talented offensive players around him. He brings a lot of help on the wing which is an area the Sixers can always use help in as they move forward. In terms of overall great impact, Watford will likely be the one who will do that for Philadelphia. He has four years of experience under his belt and will look to provide some immediate production for the Sixers. When the season gets underway, he will certainly receive a lot of attention from teammates and the coaching staff to give something right away.

Where does Sixers' Tyrese Maxey rank among point guards in the NBA?

Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey continues to take steps forward in his NBA career. After being the No. 21 pick of the 2020 draft, Maxey has morphed into an All-Star guard and has taken his place as one of the rising stars in the league. As Maxey and the Sixers move forward, he will be looking to find his efficiency again in the 2025-26 season. He averaged 26.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.3 rebounds, but he shot only 43.7% from the floor and 33.7% from deep. Both of those numbers are below his career norms so he will look to find his efficient offensive game again. HoopsHype ranked the top 26 point guards in the league and Maxey came in ranked No. 10 on the list: A volume scorer with good playmaking ability, Tyrese Maxey missed out on All-Star honors last season, but he performed at that level. Maxey even had a career season on the defensive end, averaging nearly two steals per contest, playing the role of chaotic pest well on the less glamorous end of the floor. Maxey's efficiency did take a hit last year, and playing without former league MVP Joel Embiid may have played a role in that, as the former Kentucky star boasted a 56.2 true shooting percentage in 2024-25, his lowest mark since his rookie season. The Sixers will be looking to Maxey to lead this team back into title contention. Of course, everything comes down to the health of Joel Embiid, but Philadelphia will be looking to get itself back on track to move forward in the Eastern Conference.
