King Charles' annual swan census begins on the River Thames

Ammona day ago
Ammon News - Scarlet uniforms flashed against the riverbank. Wooden skiffs glided in formation. A young swan, gently lifted from the water, was measured, inspected and released. The annual five-day census of swans belonging to King Charles III – known as Swan Upping began Monday on the River Thames to assess their health. One of the British monarch's less-known titles is Seigneur of the Swans — Lord of the Swans — and according to ancient lore, he or she owns all members of the mute swan species found in Britain's open waters.Every year, a team of carefully selected oarsmen — Swan Uppers are tasked with finding the swans on a stretch of the Thames. When a family is spotted, they shout, 'All up!' and the boats quickly surround the birds, marking them and checking for signs of disease or injury.'It gives us an indication of what's going on throughout the country,' said David Barber, who wears a scarlet jacket and a white swan feather in his cap and bears the title of King's Swan Marker. 'It's a tradition, but I think it's serving a very useful purpose as well.'Barber has been leading the event for more than 30 years. He is accompanied by a vet and oarsmen dressed in three colors: red for the king, white for the Worshipful Company of Vintners and blue stripes for the Worshipful Company of Dyers. The last two are medieval London trade guilds that were granted ownership of some Thames swans in the 15th century. The census tradition dates to the 12th century, when swans were considered an important food for royal banquets and feasts. While swans are now legally protected from hunting, they face threats from disease, pollution, vandalism and cruelty, Barber said.Their numbers have declined over the last two years, primarily due to outbreaks of avian flu across Britain, he said, adding that only 86 young swans were found during last year's Swan Upping, which was 45% fewer than the year before that. But Barber appeared positive at the end of the event's first day, with a total of 16 young swans recorded.
The census continues until Friday, traveling from Sunbury, on the outskirts of London, to Abingdon, 80 miles (130 kilometers) upstream. AP

Dog lost in Alaskan wilderness found by pilot nine days later

Ammon News - A dog who went missing during a camping trip in Alaska was found over a week later by a pilot who decided to go searching in his small plane. Soldotna residents Lewis and Amber Ekle said they were camping near Carmen Lake over the Fourth of July weekend when their dog, Koda, became spooked and ran off. "We tried to grab his collar," Lewis Ekle told KTUU-TV. "He grabbed his frisbee ... and said, 'No, I'm out.'" The couple spent nine days searching for Koda on foot and by boat, but they couldn't find any sign of the canine. They posted about the missing dog in several different Facebook groups, getting the attention of multiple volunteer searchers, including pilot John Kagerer. "I just had a real feeling. I don't know, a gut feeling that I was going to find the dog," Kagerer said. The pilot landed his plane about a half mile from where Koda disappeared, and the dog appeared within minutes. "Here comes the dog out of the alders over to me, you know. But it wouldn't get any closer than about 10 feet to me," Kagerer said. He used some dog treats he kept in his plane to lure Koda to come close enough that he could secure him with a rope and load him into the plane for a flight back to Anchorage for a reunion with his owners. "That sucker punch in our stomachs for nine days and afterwards it was just like this huge weight lifted off your shoulder. It's just amazing to have him back home," Amber Eckle said. UPI

Jordan dispatches 50-truck humanitarian convoy to Gaza

Ammon News - In continuation of the Kingdom's relief efforts to support our brothers in the Gaza Strip, the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization (JHCO) dispatched a new convoy of 50 trucks loaded with essential food supplies towards the northern Gaza Strip. This convoy, which is in direct coordination with the Jordanian Armed Forces - the Arab Army, and in cooperation with the World Food Programme (WFP), is an extension of Jordan's ongoing support since the beginning of the crisis, amid the sharp deterioration in humanitarian conditions within the Gaza Strip, particularly in the northern regions, which are facing severe food shortages and ongoing disruptions to supply chains. The aid is being sent as part of an emergency response plan, which is being closely monitored by relevant authorities to ensure that food aid reaches the most affected families through carefully considered distribution mechanisms in coordination with local partners in Gaza, JHCO confirmed. JHCO affirms its commitment to continuing to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, reinforcing Jordan's steadfast role in supporting the steadfastness of our Palestinian brothers and alleviating their suffering amid the difficult circumstances they are experiencing.
