DY6 Metals (ASX:DY6) is eyeing a slice of the rare rutile pie thanks to its new project, the Central rutile project in Cameroon.
The project has in-situ mineralisation (shallow and easily mined ore) comparable to Sovereign Metals' (ASX:SVM) Kasiya project in Malawi, home to the world's largest rutile resource at 1.8Bt at 1% rutile.
It's also contiguous to Peak Minerals' (ASX:PUA) Minta project which recently reported widespread and high value mineral assemblage of up 93% heavy minerals.
That includes the dominant rutile (up to 69.8%), monazite (up to 35.6%) and zircon (up to 21.5%).
Rutile is the primary source of titanium, which is used in the aerospace, automotive, medical and industrial sectors.
A dearth of discoveries in recent years makes the company's new project even more strategically vital in the supply chain.
Not to mention, the project sits in part of a region in Central Cameroon which is rapidly emerging as a globally significant rutile province.
DY6's technical consultant Cliff Fitzhenry, who has extensive experience with Rio Tinto and Sovereign Metals in the rutile space says DY6 is in a unique position to leverage the project and get it into production as soon as possible.
'The type of mineralisation we are targeting at Central is residual, in situ natural rutile analogous to Sovereign Metals' tier-1 Kasiya project in Malawi,' he said.
'Our Central rutile project is contiguous to Peak Minerals' Minta project and we both are part of this emerging rutile province.'
Geologically speaking, Central Cameroon has a number of similarities to the Lilongwe Plain of Central Malawi where the Kasiya deposit is found. Both regions have a high metamorphic grade bedrock, which is interpreted to be the source of the rutile, and both areas have a deep in situ weathering profile.
'We are confident that our Central rutile project has all the right indications to be highly prospective for in situ residual natural rutile deposits similar to Kasiya,' Fitzhenry said.
'There are very few of these types of deposits globally, so we are in a unique position to capitalise on an emerging supply gap for natural rutile by quickly moving this project forward and unlocking full value.'
Maiden drilling later this year
This week, the company added six new licence applications which make up the Weaver project to the east of the five permits that make up the original Central rutile project, lifting its landholding from 2124km2 to 4974km2.
With the Douala Basin project included, where DY6 identified a host of heavy mineral occurrences in reconnaissance auger sampling, it boasts around 7500km2 in the exciting Cameroonian jurisdiction.
Plus, late last month the company announced that it had identified visible natural rutile, including large residual nuggets at Central, a size even the seasoned Fitzhenry said he'd never seen before.
'These nuggets were up to 5cm in size and appear to be a weathering product from late-stage pegmatites,' Fitzhenry said.
'Following successful completion of an initial reconnaissance program at the Central Project, we will now be moving the project to the next stage where we look to kick off a systematic soil sampling campaign this week.
'This will help us to quickly cover the project package area and will help us delineate higher grade zones which will be the focus of our maiden drilling campaign later this year.'
Meanwhile, DY6's reconnaissance program at the Douala Basin HMS project has wrapped up, with results expected in the coming weeks.
'We look forward to reporting our reconnaissance sampling assay results within the September quarter and to then move the projects forward toward maiden drilling campaigns later this year,' Fitzhenry said.
By way of comparison, Sovereign is worth ~$450m and counts Rio Tinto as its largest shareholder at close to 20%. With Kasiya also regarded as one of the world's largest natural graphite deposits, that puts it on the radar for a future takeover at a significant premium to that valuation.
Peak shares have lifted 430% in 2025 alone, taking its valuation to $134m on the back of results from Minta.
DY6 is right next door at a market cap, even after a 475% YTD gain of 475%, of just $17m. That means DY6 is highly leveraged to a discover similar in nature to next door neighbour Peak's.

Barry FitzGerald: Been there, done that, Prospect could be the next ASX M&A target (again)

'Garimpeiro' columnist Barry FitzGerald has covered the resources industry for 35 years. Now he's sharing the benefits of his experience with Stockhead readers. It's all in the timing. Just ask Prospect Resources (ASX:PSC), which cashed in its African lithium chips in early 2022 just ahead of the crash in lithium prices which began to take hold later that year. It was a big cash out too. Prospect picked up the Arcadia lithium project on the outskirts of Harare in Zimbabwe in 2016. At the time, Prospect had a $6 million market cap. Prospect went on to spend $84m by 2022 to turn the initial discovery in to a shovel ready project when it went looking for development funding. During that process China's Huayou Cobalt had a better idea – let us buy the thing. Prospect was happy to oblige and pocketed $US378m for its 87% share of Arcadia. The Chinese wasted no time getting Arcadia into production, ironically adding to the rising lithium glut that sent prices crashing from early 2023. It's fair to suggest that had Prospect been looking for a buyer for Arcadia come late 2023, it would have struggled to find one. And it certainly would not have got anything like the $US378 Huayou Cobalt handed over. Prospect banked the cheque and followed up in August 2022 with a A$443 million distribution to shareholders of 96c a share that left A$33 million in the kitty for its team of African resources specialists to find the next opportunity for the company. Zambian copper belt The team landed on the advanced Mumbezhi copper project in the Zambian copper belt. While advanced all right, disputed ownership had been holding the project back. Prospect sorted that out and emerged with 85% in April last year. It could be said that Prospect has set out to do in Zambian copper what it was able to achieve in Zimbabwean lithium. Mumbezhi is on the big side of things already, with Prospect releasing its maiden resource estimate of 107.2Mt at 0.5% copper for 514,000t of copper in March this year. It also announced a compliant 'exploration target' of 420Mt to 1.05 billion tonnes (1.68Mt to 4.2Mt of copper), including the existing resource. That should have been enough in itself for the local market to sit up and pay attention, But there was only a little bump in the share price. Things changed on April 14 though when the C$20 billion international copper heavyweight First Quantum Minerals arrived on the scene. The Canadian-based miner put its hand up for a 15% placement in Prospect at a cost of $15.2 million or 15c a share – a 35% premium to Prospect's previous closing price at the time of 11c. First Quantum also became a technical adviser on Mumbezhi. It knows all there is to know about Zambian copper as it has been operating in the country for more than 25 years, producing copper, gold and nickel. Its current operations include the Kansanshi copper/gold mine and smelter and the Sentinel copper mine which produced more than 400,000t of copper combined in 2024. Sentinel is 20km to the north-west of Mumbezhi in a similar geological setting. Sentinel is a massive mining and processing operation which delivers economies of scale to make the 0.51% grade (2024) highly profitable. Its total costs in 2024 were $US2.85/lb of copper. Since the First Quantum placement, Prospect shares have marched higher to 18.7c for a market cap of $131 million. Prospect is now busy with a drilling program to grow the resource towards the world-scale levels implied by the exploration target, with advice from First Quantum. First Quantum agreed to an18-month standstill agreement on it acquiring or disposing Prospect shares, subject to customary exceptions. The market nevertheless now sees Prospect – or at least Mumbezhi itself – as an obvious potential acquisition for First Quantum. Copper had a massive week after the announcement of a planned 50% tariff on imports into the US by President Donald Trump, with US market prices surging to over US$5.50/lb. ASX 200 erases gains after President Donald Trump revealed his administration eyes higher 15-20 per cent sweeping tariffs

The ASX 200 has zig-zagged on Friday after US President Donald Trump revealed he is considering blanket 15-20 per cent blanket tariffs. The index rose 0.3 per cent before undoing its gain in the first hour of trading on Friday and sits around its Thursday closing price. Despite the bourse see-sawing, the materials sector has soared with critical minerals producer Iluka Resources jumping 25 per cent, Lynas Rare Earths rising 17 per cent and Mineral Resources adding six per cent. Trump rocked the ASX when he told NBC News countries that have not yet received a tariff letter will likely face blanket levies higher than the initially announced 10 per cent. 'Not everybody has to get a letter. You know that. We're just setting our tariffs,' Trump said in the interview. 'We're just going to say all of the remaining countries are going to pay, whether it's 20 per cent or 15 per cent. We'll work that out now.' Donald Trump also lauded the rise of chip maker Nvidia which reset its US$4t market cap before demanding the US Federal Reserve lower interest rates. 'NVIDIA IS UP 47 per cent SINCE TRUMP TARIFFS. USA is taking in Hundreds of Billions of Dollars in Tariffs,' Trump wrote on Truth Social. 'COUNTRY IS NOW 'BACK'. A GREAT CREDIT! FED SHOULD RAPIDLY LOWER RATE TO REFLECT THIS STRENGTH. USA SHOULD BE AT THE 'TOP OF THE LIST.' NO INFLATION!!!' He also revealed a 35 per cent tariff on Canada and blamed the flow of fentanyl for the hefty levy. 'As you will recall, the United States imposed Tariffs on Canada to deal with out Nation's Fentanyl crisis, which is caused, in part, by Canada's failure to stop the drugs from pouring into our Country,' Trump wrote in a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Bitcoin has also surged about 3.4 per cent, setting another record high as investors continue to rally behind the cryptocurrency. On Wall Street, the S&P 500 added 0.3 per cent, the Dow Jones rose 0.4 per cent and the Nasdaq added 0.1 per cent. London's FTSE 250 Index jumped 0.6 per cent on Thursday, Germany's DAX shed 0.4 per cent while the STOXX Europe 600 rose 0.5 per cent. New Zealand's NZX 50 index lost 0.1 per cent since it began trading on Friday, while Japan's Nikkei 225 is up 0.1 per cent,
