Stashed in 2024, Cowboys 7th-round pick looks to turn grainy film into real opportunity
But what happens when the coaching staff changes after the redshirt season? That's what Thomas faces in 2025 where, despite offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer's rise to the head coach role, he has a whole new scheme and position coach to impress.

Profile
Thomas has a chance to make the 2025 roster as the Cowboys have issues at both tackle spots. Tyler Guyton had an mostly down rookie year as a first-round pick, and his backup Asim Richards doesn't have a ton of experience, either. On the opposite side, Terence Steele is entering the final assured year of his deal and if he can't improve his pass protection he may not get another opportunity in Dallas. In other words, there are future snaps to project and if Thomas shows value, they won't be able to stash him another year.
Aside from those three players, Matt Waletzko still exists on the depth chartm as does Dakoda Shepley. The Cowboys also signed Hakeem Adeniji during free agency, who has experience both inside and out, and drafted Anaji Cornelius in the sixth round back in April.

Previewing the 2025 season for Texas A&M WR Terry Bussey with his player profile
As we gear up for the 2025 football season, Aggies Wire is breaking down every player on the Texas A&M roster. Throughout the preseason, each profile will highlight a player's background, their recruiting rankings upon graduating from high school, and their projected role under head coach Mike Elko. Terry Bussey entered the 2024 season surrounded by hype—hype that new head coach Mike Elko rightfully tried to temper at every opportunity when asked about the true freshman's role. Fans speculated wildly: some wanted him on offense, others on defense, and a few believed he could play both sides of the ball. Ultimately, he landed on offense and special teams. His freshman season was hard to evaluate for several reasons. He arrived later than most of his class, didn't have a set position until later in the year, and had to navigate a new coaching staff establishing a new culture. Despite a low usage rate, Bussey showed flashes of potential, though it was a modest start to his career. In total, he recorded 49 touches for 572 yards and two touchdowns. Preseason Player Profile Recruiting Rankings (Class of 2024) The former five-star prospect was one of the most sought-after recruits in the nation. When Jimbo Fisher was fired during the 2023 season, several programs made a push, but Bussey stayed firm in his commitment and chose to remain with Coach Elko. In high school, he was a three-time Class 2A MVP and earned Mr. Texas Football honors from Dave Campbell's Texas Football in 2022. Despite missing several games during his senior season, he led Timpson High School to its first-ever state championship. Depth Chart Outlook Bussey's situation is unique. Last year, he filled a positionless offensive role. Coach Elko has now confirmed that Bussey's official position will be wide receiver, although his versatility means he'll be moved around—similar to how Deebo Samuel is used. Even if he's not listed as a starter, expect him to see plenty of touches during the 2025 season. Cowboys' Trevon Diggs Trade, Cut or Hope Options Offered by Insider
Cowboys' Trevon Diggs Trade, Cut or Hope Options Offered by Insider originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Cowboys have been burdened by injuries to key stars over the past several seasons, and one player the team is eagerly hoping to see return to full form is ball-hawking cornerback Trevon Diggs. Advertisement But there are some obstacles here. Diggs' injury struggles began in 2023, when he suffered a torn ACL during a Week 3 practice, forcing him to undergo surgery and miss the remainder of the season. His return in 2024 initially looked promising, as he performed at a high level and showed flashes of his Pro Bowl form. But his comeback was cut short once again after Week 14, when a cartilage injury in the same knee sidelined him for the rest of the year. In January 2025, Diggs underwent a chondral tissue graft procedure to repair the damaged cartilage in his left knee. The recovery timeline was and is significant. has reported that he will miss training camp and possibly the start of the regular season; Diggs himself has said he is targeting Week 1 as his comeback date. Advertisement Adding to the uncertainty, Diggs did not participate fully in the Cowboys' offseason program as he chose to continue some of his rehabbing in Miami, a decision that privately rankled some folks inside The Star, per our Mike Fisher. Despite the absence, the Cowboys remain optimistic. Coach Brian Schottenheimer recently provided an update, stating, 'It's going good. All signs are positive.' Now, the key questions become: When will Trevon Diggs return? And what should the expectations be for his role in the Cowboys' defensive backfield in 2025? A return for Week 1 against the Eagles? Maybe. However, he is currently listed on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list as he continues his recovery. If he remains on the list through the first regular-season game, he will be required to miss the first four games, making his earliest possible return Week 5 against the Jets on October 5. Advertisement Are there other options? Our Cowboys insider Mike Fisher: 'The savings from cutting him (which changes next spring) don't outweigh the value of having him. A trade? Why would a team want to take him on now? 'That leaves one thing: Hope. That's it.' When Trevon does return, some may expect him to carry most of the workload, but that might not be the case. Despite losing cornerback Jourdan Lewis to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the defensive backfield remains strong enough (if not yet deep enough with proven bodies). DaRon Bland has emerged as a star over the past three seasons, earning a First Team All-Pro selection and setting an NFL record for most interceptions returned for a touchdown in a single season in 2023. Advertisement The Cowboys are expecting a few young players on the back end to step up and make an impact in 2025. Rookie Shavon Revel Jr., a third-round pick out of East Carolina, has generated some preseason buzz as a potential fill-in for Diggs during his absence. Meanwhile, Caelen Carson, entering his sophomore season, is looking to bounce back after a challenging rookie year. The coaching staff is expecting big improvements from him as he's also being relied upon to help stabilize the secondary. While it remains uncertain whether Diggs will return before the season opener or sometime midseason, the two-time Pro Bowler is expected to play a significant role upon his return, not only as a major contributor on the field but also as a mentor to the younger talent in the Cowboys' defensive backfield. And waiting for that is the best 'hope' Dallas has. Get more from Hayden Pustejovsky here. Cowboys Source Issues Three-Word Truth On Diggs Rumors
Cowboys Source Issues Three-Word Truth On Diggs Rumors originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - We've done the analysis. When it comes to Trevon Diggs' time with the Dallas Cowboys, there are three options being thrown out there. Advertisement Trade him. Cut him. Hope for him. We will concede that the 51st overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft has been a success story in many ways here ... it's been a while since the playmaking Diggs has lived up to expectations. That is mostly due to the fact that he has sustained back-to-back season-ending injuries to that troublesome left knee ... and some people here inside The Star also think it's due to a previous lack of intensity when it came to his rehab. But ... He is a two-time Pro Bowler and was a First-Team All-Pro in 2021 ... at a time that was pre-injury and a time loaded with his record-setting ability to grab interceptions. Advertisement Can that all happen again? As we have illustrated here, the Cowboys can "escape hatch'' their way out of his contract in a reasonably affordable way after the completion of the 2025 NFL season. Do it next offseason and they save about $12.5 million while they carry a dead cap hit of just under $6 million in 2026. Or, better yet, they could designate him a post-June 1 release, saving $15.5 million and then can spread the dead cap of $6 mil over the 2026 and 2027 seasons at a little under $3 mil per year. Trade? If Diggs' injuries keep him from returning to the field at some early stage this year (Trevon has targeted Week 1 for his comeback, unrealistic as that sounds), and if the rehab prevents him from returning to form in 2025 ... Advertisement Why would anybody want to trade for him? That leaves ... "hope'' ... and indeed, internet memes aside, "hope'' is pretty much the plan.'' So, a source tells "We will wait.'' Wait on the rehab. Wait on cutting him. Wait on panicking. Wait. Hope. The fact that fellow DaRon Bland is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2025 plays into this; maybe Dallas simply transfers its investment from Diggs to Bland. The possible play of rookie Shavon Revel (also rehabbing) is a factor, too. If he becomes a starting-caliber corner, Diggs' importance here shrinks. But that's for later. For now?
