Overseas Investors: Key strength ratio signals bullish momentum for Indian markets

Mumbai: The monthly advance-decline ratio (ADR) for all BSE-listed stocks was above one in June for the fourth consecutive month. Analysts said it indicates improving investor confidence. This, amid a revival in the IPO market and broad-based buying, is expected to propel the markets to a new peak in near term. The last time the ADR was consecutively above one was between April 2023 and January 2024 for 10 consecutive months."The ADR remaining over one consistently is a sign that the bullish momentum is back as benchmark indices are trading above key moving averages while the mid-cap and small caps are in an upward trajectory as well," said Rajesh Palviya, head of technicals and derivatives, Axis Derivatives. "The VIX has meanwhile remained comfortable below 14."Palviya said the overseas investors have turned buyers of Indian equities amid a revival in the IPO market and promoter stake sales - all without a significant fall in the market. In the past four months, benchmark Nifty gained around 15% after declining 6.4% in the first two months of the year. The Nifty Mid-cap 150 and Small-cap 250 indices gained 23.6% and 28% respectively in the past four months. On the derivatives front, overseas investors reduced short positions on index futures on expiry from the peak of 1,09,471 positions to 38,123 positions which leaves room for short squeeze."The foreign investors remain short on the market and haven't reduced their positions significantly yet," said Rohit Srivastava, founder, indiacharts.com. "Short covering on that front could be a trigger for the markets that pushes it higher." Srivastava said the bullish momentum indicated by consistently positive ADR is likely to support benchmark Nifty to all time high especially since July has been a strong month historically for the markets.Overseas investors turned buyers of Indian equities in March after selling shares worth ₹1.46 lakh crore. "The market has absorbed the negatives such as Trump tariffs, India-Pak dispute and the middle eastern conflict with no major declines," said Srivastava. "In the near term, benchmark Nifty is likely to be at 26,400 levels initially and move towards 28,380 levels by December this year."Srivastava, however, said some stocks and sectors are not participating in the markets but post short-term consolidation, these stocks and sectors are expected to follow suit.Analysts said benchmark Nifty is expected to be at all time high levels in July or latest by August- as Trump is expected to soften the tariffs and the impact is likely to be limited to sectors like IT, pharma and auto may face the brunt. Palviya said benchmark Nifty is expected to be at 25,800-26,000 levels in the near term and all sectors are expected to contribute to the upmove.'Bank Nifty is on an upward trajectory, and auto and FMCG indices are also near breakout levels while railways, chemicals, sugar and fertilisers are also inching higher which indicates that strength is returning to the street.' The delivery volumes witnessed a steady upmove since April; after peaking in March, however, analysts attributed the increase to regulations on volumes.'The delivery volume share moved up steadily on a monthly basis, however, Sebi regulations on volumes especially for smallcap and mid-cap segment had more to do with it,' said Palviya. 'While delivery volumes moved higher, the turnover hasn't increased much.'

Congress targets govt, SEBI on Jane Street ‘market manipulation'
The Congress on Tuesday hit out at the SEBI and the government for not taking timely action against US algorithm trading firm Jane Street for 'stock market manipulation'. Congress head of social media department Supriya Shrinate said Jane Street had in 2024 admitted in a US court it made $1 billion in India in 2023 from the Indian options market by exploiting 'inefficiencies'. 'By 2024, that amount grew to $2.3 billion, which was 11.2% of all the money it made around the world. But SEBI didn't act on this information, it was only in February 2025 that SEBI issued a mild warning, a cautionary letter to Jane Street, warning against its questionable trading patterns. But the firm continued its manipulative trades till as late as May 2025,' Shrinate said. Criticising SEBI, she said its 'report shows that 93% of retail investors lost money in derivatives trading between FY2021 and FY2024'. 'In FY2024 alone, 91.1% of traders lost Rs 52,400 crore,' she said. She said instead of protecting small investors, SEBI turned a blind eye to 'rampant fraudulent activities'.

IPL business worth over $18 billion, rises 13% in a year: Report
Representative image MUMBAI: IPL, cricket's annual showpiece event, has seen its business value jump 13% in a year to $18.5 billion - nearly Rs 1.6 lakh crore. At the same time, its brand value has risen 14% to nearly $4 billion (about Rs 33,000 crore), a report by NYSE-listed investment bank Houlihan Lokey, which has valued several sports franchises around the world, showed. The year also saw 2025 IPL winner Royal Challengers Bengaluru taking the top slot in terms of brand value among the 10 teams that compete in the league. The first-time winner in the league's 18-year history has a brand value of $269 million. In the brand valuation table, RCB is followed by Mumbai Indians at $242 million, Chennai Super Kings at $235 million and Kolkata Knight Riders at $227 million. "IPL continues to redefine sports commercialisation - not just in terms of cricketing excellence but through record auctions, landmark sponsorships, technological advancements, and an ever-expanding international footprint," the report said about the league's recent expansions and business growth. Calling IPL "a global phenomenon" that is at the intersection of sport, entertainment, and commerce, the report said that the league's "influence now extends far beyond the cricketing fraternity, reshaping fan engagement, commercial models, and the structure of the sport itself". The report pointed out that IPL's success has also catalysed a proliferation of short-format leagues across continents, "redefining the modern cricketing calendar and embedding itself as a cornerstone of contemporary popular culture". The report by Houlihan Lokey also estimated that the advertising revenue during the 2025 IPL had jumped a massive 50% to about $600 million (about Rs 5,000 crore). And in terms of viewership, the final match between RCB and Punjab Kings recorded over 678 million views, a number that was higher than the India-Pakistan clash during the ICC Championship in Feb this year, the report said. On IPL's revenue model, the report said that it represented "a near-perfect blend of predictable cash flows and cost discipline, a rarity in the global sports asset universe. "Revenues are underwritten by BCCI's long-term, well-negotiated media rights contracts and front-loaded sponsorship deals, creating annuity-like cash flows." For top franchisees, almost 80% of the costs are secured even before the tournament begins. "On the cost side, the presence of a salary cap (Rs 120 crore per team) functions as an embedded margin protector, preventing wage inflation (a major concern for global sports teams) and ensuring competitive parity among teams." In terms of costs and revenue models, IPL is seen to be superior to the English Premier League (EPL) of the UK and the National Basketball Association (NBA) of the US, the report noted. "For institutional investors, this makes the IPL not just a sports league but a high-growth compounder in the entertainment space, catering to a fast-growing fan base with rising disposable income and a strong appetite for premium digital experiences.
