Maharashtra govt declares ‘Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav' as state festival; says it will ‘bear expenses for grand celebrations'

Indian Express2 days ago
The Maharashtra government Thursday declared 'Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav' as the state festival.
Making the announcement in the Legislative Assembly, Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar said, 'Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav in Maharashtra was started by Lokmanya Tilak in 1893. The very essence of this festival is rooted in social unity, nationalism, the spirit of freedom, self-respect, and pride in our language. That noble tradition continues even today. Ganeshotsav is not just a celebration – it is a symbol of Maharashtra's cultural pride and identity.'
Stating that the Maharashtra government was firmly committed to preserving, promoting, and celebrating the cultural legacy of Ganeshotsav across the state and the nation, Shelar added that 'some individuals attempted to hinder this age-old public tradition by raising various court petitions, trying to obstruct the celebration.'
'I wish to place on record that under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, the Mahayuti government acted swiftly and decisively removed all such hurdles.
'During the previous government, restrictions were imposed on traditional POP (Plaster of Paris) idols, citing CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) guidelines, without offering practical alternatives. In contrast, our department approached the issue with a more balanced view.
'We initiated a comprehensive study to explore eco-friendly alternatives and assess whether POP is truly harmful to the environment. We commissioned an in-depth study by the Kakodkar Committee through the Rajiv Gandhi Science Commission. Following this, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav approved the findings, and the earlier restrictions were lifted. As per the court's ruling, the making, displaying, and selling of POP idols are now permitted,' the minister further said.
The cultural affairs minister claimed that the Devendra Fadnavis-led Mahayuti government has taken a clear and proactive stance on Ganeshotsav. 'Be it police security, infrastructure needs, or financial support for grand celebrations in cities like Pune, Mumbai, and across the state – the Maharashtra government will bear the required expenses,' the minister said.
'I appeal to all Ganpati Mandals to incorporate themes in their festivities that honour our Armed forces, showcase social initiatives, Operation Sindoor, highlight the nation's developmental achievements, and pay tributes to our great leaders in their decorative displays.
'This Ganesh festival must reflect social consciousness, environmental responsibility, and the joy of celebration, Shelar said.
This year, Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated on August 26.

‘Not for aggression': Shehbaz Sharif denies use of nuclear weapons during India-Pak conflict

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday dismissed the notion of a nuclear exchange during the recent conflict with India, saying his country's nuclear programme was meant for 'peaceful purposes and self-defence'. Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif says the country's nuclear programme is solely for peaceful purposes and national defence.(REUTERS File) Sharif made the comments while addressing a group of Pakistani students in Islamabad. Recalling the four-day military confrontation, Sharif said 55 Pakistanis were killed during the Indian military strikes. However, he claimed that Pakistan had responded with 'full might' during the escalation. When asked about the possibility of using nuclear weapons, Sharif said, 'Pakistan's nuclear programme is solely for peaceful purposes and national defence, not for aggression.' India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. As part of Operation Sindoor, the Indian armed forces carried out strikes on May 7, targeting nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, including Bahawalpur, a known stronghold of the Jaish-e-Mohammad terror outfit. The strikes were in retaliation for the Pahalgam massacre, in which 26 civilians were killed. Sharif denies rumours of Zardari stepping down Sharif also dismissed rumours that Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari may be forced to step down and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir aspired to assume the presidency, Sharif said such claims were 'mere speculations'. 'Field Marshal Asim Munir has never expressed any desire to become the president, nor is there any such plan in the offing,' he told The News on Friday. Sharif added that he, Zardari and Munir shared a relationship built on mutual respect. The clarification followed interior minister Mohsin Naqvi's statement on X on Thursday, in which he denounced the 'malicious campaign' targeting Zardari, Sharif, and Munir. 'We are fully aware of who is behind the malicious campaign,' said Naqvi, who is considered close to the top military leadership. 'I have categorically stated there has been no discussion, nor does any such idea exist, about the president being asked to resign or the COAS aspiring to assume the presidency,' he added. Naqvi also alleged the involvement of hostile foreign elements in fuelling the campaign and said, 'To those involved in this narrative, do whatever you wish in collaboration with hostile foreign agencies. As for us, we will do whatever is necessary to make Pakistan strong again, InshAllah.' Munir was appointed as army chief in 2022 for a three-year tenure, which was later extended to five years by the government. With PTI inputs

‘Blessed by Goddess Kali, Indian armed forces displayed valour in Op Sindoor'

1 2 Lucknow: Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said the Indian armed forces have the special blessings of Goddess Kali and during Operation Sindoor , they displayed amazing bravery in destroying terrorist camps on Pakistani soil. Speaking at the inauguration of a newly-built Badi Kali temple in Lucknow's Chowk area, the Lucknow MP said that women soldiers and pilots participated in the Operation Sindoor in large numbers and defeated the enemy. The defence minister said the 26th anniversary of the Kargil War is being celebrated this year. "We should remember all the heroes, including Captain Manoj Pandey (of Lucknow), who made the supreme sacrifice for Mother India. The Indian Army regiment in which Captain Pandey served is called the Gurkha Rifles. The slogan of the regiment is Jai Mahakali, Ayo Gurkhali. Mahakali is the inspiration for bravery in this country," he added. Singh expressed deep reverence for the Badi Kali temple, believed to be over 2,000 years old and established by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. He cited the late Lalji Tandon's writings, which mention the temple's ancient origins and spiritual significance. Singh praised the community's active role in the temple's development and acknowledged the govt's support, especially the efforts of tourism minister Jaiveer Singh. He emphasised that the temple is not just a place of worship but a cornerstone of Lucknow's cultural and spiritual identity—standing tall even before the city itself took shape. Reflecting on his personal connection, Singh said he felt blessed to serve as Lucknow's representative, attributing his journey in public life to the grace of Badi Kali Maa. He fondly remembered literary icon Amrit Lal Nagar, who dedicated his life to the service of the Goddess. Singh also announced plans for a new satsang hall and a yoga centre within the temple complex, ensuring it remains a vibrant hub for devotion and wellness. He highlighted the Modi govt's commitment to cultural preservation, citing projects like the Kashi Vishwanath and Mahakal Corridors, as well as the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Meanwhile, deputy CM Brajesh Pathak emphasised the spiritual importance of Goddess Kali in every auspicious household event. Tourism minister Jaiveer Singh credited the govt's efforts in reviving and promoting Sanatan culture and traditions, which, he said, have now reached new heights.
