England vs France odds, prediction: Defending champs begin Euro 2025 campaign

New York Times7 hours ago
What an opening game for the holders at the European Championships. England won the last Euros on home soil before failing at the final hurdle at the World Cup, narrowly losing to Spain in the 2023 final.
Their manager, Sarina Wiegman, has an extraordinary record in this competition, having won it with both the Netherlands and England. In fact, her record is astonishing as a manager at the Euros with 12 wins from 12 matches. Despite this, France represent a serious test and should not be underestimated. A year ago, England defeated the French but they haven't managed the trick twice in a row since way back in 1974.

There is something of the immovable force meets the unstoppable object about this one. France haven't lost any of their last 10 Euros group games, a run that stretches back to 2009.
Spain and England are the favourites to go all the way, understandably, but France are considered the fourth-most likely to lift the trophy at the end of the month so this is undeniably the pick of the group stage matches. France have reached the knockouts of each of the last four Euros and will believe there is nothing to stop 2025 going the same way.
The last six matches between these sides are a good indicator of how little there is to separate the teams. England have won three and France have won three, a far cry from the first 21 games they played against each other, during which time England won only twice. At the Euros, it's one win apiece for England and France having met on just two occasions at the tournament. The last three holders have drawn their opening match when attempting to retain their trophy, a result both these teams would probably be happy with ahead of easier group stage games.

England 1, France 1
There is almost nothing to suggest either team has the upper hand here and, while there haven't been many draws between the sides in recent times, it feels the most likely outcome. Opening matches at major tournaments are often tentative affairs and both nations will feel as though a draw represents a positive result in by far the toughest of the group games. The holders of the Euros tend to draw their opener and, in a game in which that could suit both teams, it's hard to look past a repeat here.

FC Barcelona is set to receive an offer from a European giant - and that which knocked it out of the Champions League last season - for Marc-Andre ter Stegen according to SPORT, which cited anonymous sources. Though he started 2024/2025 as his team's captain and number one shotstopper, a pretty much campaign-ending injury knocked the German down the pecking order in Catalonia. Wojciech Szczesny was brought out of retirement to cover for the skipper and did a pretty outstanding job as Barca won all three titles on offer in Spain. After Barca shipped seven goals to Inter Milan, however, which saw them lose 7-6 on aggregate in the UCL finals, the quest for a new goalkeeper began. Barca didn't cast its net far and simply looked across the city to Espanyol. Activating breakout star Joan Garcia's $29.5 million (€25 million) and swiftly announcing the 24-year-old. Ter Stegen has since been the subject of endless reports with regards to being forced out of the club. While Sporting Director Deco said that he doesn't owe the veteran an explanation, he will reportedly have talks to clear up his future with head coach Hansi Flick before preseason training starts on July 13. Before that, though, Ter Stegen could have already been shipped off to another club. There has already been interest in him from Saudi Arabia and Galatasaray, but it is Inter Milan that is now thinking of lodging an offer in the coming days. Galatasaray has reportedly switched its focus to the Italians' goalkeeper Yan Sommer, who has just one year left on his contract at the San Siro, and that has forced the UCL runners-up recently knocked out of the Club World Cup by Fluminense to look for a replacement. Ter Stegen went from 'untouchable' to surplus to requirements at FC Barcelona Whether he moves on in the near future or sees out his contract which runs until 2028, Ter Stegen has gone from an 'untouchable' captain at FC Barcelona to a figure that is surplus to requirements while having become angered as what he perceives to be a media campaign against him aimed at forcing his exit.

Inter Milan & Napoli ‘Unlikely' To Trigger €52M Release Clause For Fiorentina Star

Inter Milan and Napoli are unlikely to trigger the €52 million release clause of Fiorentina striker Moise Kean this summer. This according to today's print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. Advertisement The future of Fiorentina striker Moise Kean has been a subject of speculation this summer. The Italian international scored 25 goals and made three assists in all competitions for La Viola. He really made good on the promise that he had long shown playing for Juventus, Everton, and PSG. Therefore, it is hardly surprising that there would be transfer interest in Kean this summer. (Photo by) Inter Milan have reportedly earmarked Kean as a potential replacement in the event of a surprise departure by Marcus Thuram. Meanwhile, Napoli are also eyeing the 25-year-old up. Advertisement The Partenopei are therefore working to strengthen their Serie A title-winning squad this summer. A backup to Romelu Lukaku in attack would be one of the priorities. The fact that Moise Kean has a €52 million release clause at Fiorentina could make him more attainable. However, according to the Gazzetta, it would be unlikely that either Inter or Napoli would offer that much in order to trigger the clause.

Rahul and Pant extend India's lead over England in second Test

KL Rahul made a composed fifty before the aggressive Rishabh Pant threatened to make England pay dearly for dropping him twice as India strengthened their grip on the second Test at Edgbaston on Saturday. India were 177-3 in their second innings at lunch on the fourth day, a healthy -- if not yet decisive -- lead of 357 runs. Advertisement India captain Shubman Gill, fresh from his commanding 269 in the first innings, was unbeaten on 24 and Pant was a typically dynamic 41 not out, having faced just 35 balls including five fours and two sixes. India resumed on 64-1, a lead of 244 runs, after dismissing England for 407 in reply to their first-innings 567 despite a partnership of over 300 runs between Jamie Smith (184 not out) and Harry Brook (158). England chased down an imposing target of 371 to win the first Test of this series at Headingley. At Edgbaston three years ago, they achieved their all-time record fourth-innings victory pursuit, making 378 against India. KL Rahul, 28 not out overnight, was soon into his stride with a cover-driven four off Brydon Carse. Advertisement But with play starting Saturday under grey skies -- and the floodlights switched on -- the overhead conditions were in favour of the bowlers. Fast bowler Carse was rewarded for a fine spell when Karun Nair, on 26 edged a full-length ball that straightened, with wicketkeeper Smith, moving smartly to his right, holding a sharp catch that left India 96-2. Rahul's stylish off-driven three off Josh Tongue took the opener to a 78-ball fifty, including nine fours. Rahul fell for 55 when he was clean bowled by a fine full-length delivery from fast bowler Tongue that flattened middle stump. India were still well-placed at 130-3 as the dynamic Pant came in. Off just his fourth ball the left-hander charged down the pitch to drive Tongue for a magnificent straight six. Advertisement Pant was reprieved on 10 when he tried to launch Stokes over the in-field only for Zak Crawley to drop a routine two-handed catch at mid-off. The Indian wicketkeeper, who scored hundreds in both innings of India's five-wicket loss in the first Test at Headingley, pulled off-spinner Shoaib Bashir's second ball Saturday for four and swept the fourth for another boundary. But Pant, lost control of his bat completely, throwing it to square leg, when he attempted a huge heave across the line at Tongue. The very next ball Pant, on 31, was dropped again when he mistimed a flick off Tongue, with a diving Chris Woakes, running in from square leg, just unable to cling onto the low catch. jdg/pb
