Girl, 11, beaten and scalded, parents in custody

ARAU: A couple has been remanded in connection with the alleged abuse of their 11-year-old daughter, police said.
Doctors found signs the girl was beaten with blunt objects and scalded, with injuries to her head, chest, and limbs.
Arau district police chief, Superintendent Ahmad Mohsin Md Rodi, said the arrests were made following a report lodged by a child protection officer from the state Welfare Department (JKM), who visited the family's home in Taman Desa Saujana, Arau.
"The officer went to the house in Taman Desa Saujana, Arau, Perlis, after receiving a public complaint regarding a young girl suspected of being physically abused by her mother.
"JKM then rescued the child and placed her in a safe location at the Arau Children's Home in Perlis. A police report was subsequently lodged regarding the incident," he said in a statement today.
Initial investigations revealed the child, who attends a Chinese vernacular school in Kangar, could have been abused over the past two years.
The most recent incident was reported yesterday at approximately 12.30pm, when the child was caned on her back by her father for allegedly misbehaving.
"Investigations revealed that the victim sustained injuries to her head, body, legs, and arms. She was taken to the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital in Kangar for treatment and further examination," he said.
He added that medical officers at the hospital found injuries to the girl's head, lips, chest, ribs, back, arms, and calves, believed to be the result of being struck with blunt objects and scalded with hot water.
"The injuries were found to be a combination of both old and new wounds, and the child was referred to the Paediatric Unit at the hospital for further treatment," he said.
The child is placed under the care of the Perlis State Social Welfare Department.

Trial for Chinese national who allegedly stabbed ex-girlfriend on uni campus

SHAH ALAM: A foreign student who allegedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend in the neck has claimed trial at the Sessions Court here. Chinese national You Wei, 22, was accused of causing grievous hurt by using a weapon to Wu Jalin, 20, on the second floor of a private university in Subang Jaya at 6.30pm on July 14. According to the charge sheet, You stabbed Wu, also a Chinese national, on the left side of her neck with a knife, which could have caused death. The charge, under Section 326 of the Penal Code, was read out to him in English before judge Norazlin Othman. If convicted, You faces a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine or whipping. DPP Nurul Sofea Jaysal did not propose any bail for the accused pending an Immigration Department review. His passport is valid until Oct 31, 2026. In mitigation, You's counsel Revin Kumar said his client had a mental health condition. "He receives bipolar disorder treatment at a private clinic," said Revin, adding You had been remanded for seven days since his detention on July 14. The court then granted You bail of RM20,000 with two sureties and to report once a month. He was also ordered to surrender his passport to the court and not to harass the victim or any prosecution witness. Norazlin then set Sept 17 for case mention.

Chinese student pleads not guilty to stabbing ex-girlfriend

PETALING JAYA: A 22-year-old Chinese national has pleaded not guilty to charges of stabbing his former girlfriend at a private university campus in Sunway, here, last week. You Wei appeared before the Shah Alam Sessions Court today, where he was formally charged with causing grievous bodily harm after allegedly attacking the victim with a knife on July 14. The incident occurred at a private educational institution in the Sunway area, where the accused allegedly inflicted a stab wound to the left side of the woman's neck. The charges fall under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which carries severe penalties including imprisonment for up to two decades, monetary fines, or corporal punishment if a conviction is secured. According to FMT, during court proceedings, the defendant acknowledged understanding the charges but stated his disagreement with them. The prosecution, led by deputy public prosecutor Nurul Sofea Jaysal, opposed bail applications, arguing that the accused posed a flight risk due to his foreign national status. Defence counsel Revin Kumar countered by emphasising his client's willingness to comply with court-imposed conditions. The lawyer highlighted that You Wei intended to remain in Malaysia to complete his academic programme and would adhere to reporting requirements, including passport surrender and regular police check-ins. The defence also disclosed that the accused suffers from bipolar disorder and is currently receiving medical treatment for the condition. Sessions judge Norazlin Othman granted bail set at RM20,000 with two guarantors. The court imposed additional conditions prohibiting contact with the victim and other witnesses, mandating passport surrender, and requiring monthly police station visits. The case has been scheduled for mention on September 17.
