Girl, 11, beaten and scalded, parents in custody

ARAU: A couple has been remanded in connection with the alleged abuse of their 11-year-old daughter, police said. Doctors found signs the girl was beaten with blunt objects and scalded, with injuries to her head, chest, and limbs. Arau district police chief, Superintendent Ahmad Mohsin Md Rodi, said the arrests were made following a report lodged by a child protection officer from the state Welfare Department (JKM), who visited the family's home in Taman Desa Saujana, Arau. "The officer went to the house in Taman Desa Saujana, Arau, Perlis, after receiving a public complaint regarding a young girl suspected of being physically abused by her mother. "JKM then rescued the child and placed her in a safe location at the Arau Children's Home in Perlis. A police report was subsequently lodged regarding the incident," he said in a statement today. Initial investigations revealed the child, who attends a Chinese vernacular school in Kangar, could have been abused over the past two years. The most recent incident was reported yesterday at approximately 12.30pm, when the child was caned on her back by her father for allegedly misbehaving. "Investigations revealed that the victim sustained injuries to her head, body, legs, and arms. She was taken to the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital in Kangar for treatment and further examination," he said. He added that medical officers at the hospital found injuries to the girl's head, lips, chest, ribs, back, arms, and calves, believed to be the result of being struck with blunt objects and scalded with hot water. "The injuries were found to be a combination of both old and new wounds, and the child was referred to the Paediatric Unit at the hospital for further treatment," he said. The child is placed under the care of the Perlis State Social Welfare Department.
