British actor 'tipped to become next James Bond' after bosses narrow shortlist

Metro5 days ago
A new name has entered the fray in the search for the next James Bond, with actor Callum Turner 'tipped' to take the role.
The 35-year-old model-turned-actor – and fiancée of pop icon Dua Lipa – starred in the Apple TV+ drama Masters of the Air as Major 'Bucky' Egan.
He also appeared in the Harry Potter spin-off films as Theseus Scamander in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and The Secrets of Dumbledore.
Last month, it was confirmed that the Bond franchise had found its next director in Dune helmsman Denis Villeneuve.
This led to speculation that his Lisan al Gaib Timothée Chalamet might take on the role – but the iconic spy's shoes remain unfilled for now.
With Bond's Amazon bosses reportedly circling just a handful of names, British actor Callum may yet fit the bill.
According to a report from Heart Bingo, it's believed that Callum would be Amazon bosses' best pick for the role.
Sarah Caskie, Head of Brand for online website told The Daily Mail: 'With the rumour mill surrounding the next continuing to turn following the announcement Amazon will be taking the reins with the franchise, we've turned to public opinion to find the best fit for the 007 role.
'The masses have spoken on X and we've collated the data to find that Callum Turner is the people's choice to replace Daniel Craig, with 63% of posts concerning his potential role in the next film being positive, while 0% were negative.'
As of April, Callum's odds for the role were at 20/1.
Outside of his acting work, Callum may best be known as Dua Lipa's husband-to-be.
The Levitating singer confirmed that she and boyfriend Callum had gotten engaged, months after flashing a chunky engagement ring on social media.
'Yeah, we're engaged,' she told British Vogue.
'It's very exciting. This decision to grow old together, to see a life and just, I don't know, be best friends forever – it's a really special feeling.'
Should Callum take on the license to kill – or even if he misses out – bosses could do far worse than hit up Dua Lipa for the next theme tune.
Callum joins a list of names which include current frontrunner Aaron Taylor-Johnson, James Norton and Theo James.
Last month, producers were said to be facing a choice between three big names.
This list consisted of Babygirl's Harris Dickinson, Saltburn star Jacob Elordi and Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland.
However, with the position still vacant, BBC actor Scott Rose-Marsh has also emerged as a potential candidate.
The 37-year-old thespian, who appeared in movies Wolves of War and Code of Silence, is currently eighth-favourite for the part, according to Oddschecker.
This makes him something of an underdog in the fight, especially when compared to bigger names like Henry Cavill and Tom Hardy.
The search for the next Bond follows the news that Dune director Denis will helm the franchise's next instalment. More Trending
'Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007,' he said in a statement released soon after the news broke.
'I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory.
He described the opportunity 'a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honour.'

True story of socialite Claus von Bulow accused of trying to murder his heiress wife as scandal becomes TV series

Apple is working on a limited series about late socialite Claus von Bulow, who was famously accused of trying to murder his wife Sunny in the early '80s. According to Deadline, the prestige streamer already has British playwright Jack Thorne attached to the project. Thorne was most recently behind Netflix 's psychological crime drama Adolescence, which won universal acclaim from critics and became one of the most-watched Netflix shows of all time. The Danish-born Bulow was found guilty of the attempted murder of his heiress wife in a 1982 trial before being acquitted in 1985 following a second trial. The second trial was televised, making it the first major criminal trial in the United States to be broadcast live on television. He was accused of using insulin injections to try to kill the heiress so that he could get his hands on her $100million fortune, which she had inherited from her Pittsburgh utilities magnate father George Crawford, who died when she was just three. Mrs Bulow was first found unresponsive in one of the many bathrooms at their Rhode Island home while celebrating Christmas with her family in 1979. She slipped into a coma and was rushed to hospital, where she was miraculously revived. Doctors determined that the coma was the result of low blood sugar and diagnosed her as hypoglycemic. The following Christmas she was found unconscious again, but this time she had suffered severe enough brain injury to fall into a persistent vegetative state. The socialite ended up in a coma that lasted for the rest of her life, up until her death in 2008. In a sensational trial, her husband was accused of trying to murder her - being first found guilty, then dramatically cleared. Mrs Bulow's children from her first marriage to Prince Alfred von Auersperg hired private investigators to find out if Mr Bulow was behind what happened to their mother. He was charged in 1982, but released on $1million bail. Mr Bulow was found guilty in 1982 and sentenced to 30 years in jail. Just three years later, the verdict was thrown out and a retrial took place. Mr Bulow hired celebrity attorney Alan Dershowitz, who would later defend O.J. Simpson and Jeffrey Epstein, to get his conviction overturned. Celebrities took the stand to speak in Mr Bulow's defense, including writer Truman Capote, and a media firestorm ensued. According to Dershowitz, one prosecutor on the case said, 'This case has everything. It has money, sex, drugs; it has Newport, New York and Europe; it has nobility; it has maids, butlers, a gardener.' After being freed, Mrs Bulow's children had Mr Bulow removed from their mother's will and left him without a penny. Only the couple's biological daughter, Cosima, stood by him and he denounced any entitlements in favor of her being able to equally share assets with her half siblings. Mr Bulow was able to divorce Mrs Bulow in 1988, while she was still comatose. Their Manhattan apartment and Newport mansion were turned over to the von Auersperg children from her previous marriage. Dershowitz went on to write a book about the trial which was turned into 1990 film Reversal Of Fortune, starring Jeremy Irons as Mr Bulow and Glenn Close as his wife. The film was enormous hit, earning rave reviews from critics and winning Irons the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1991. After his acquittal, Mr Bulow moved to London and became a fixture on the social scene. He died in his London home in 2019 at age 92.

Criminally good crime: The Red Shore by William Shaw, The Inside Man by Trevor Wood, Gunner by Alan Parks

The Red Shore is available now from the Mail Bookshop The Red Shore by William Shaw (Hemlock £18.99, 384pp) A confirmed bachelor, Met detective Eden Driscoll never wanted a child. But then his estranged sister, Apple, who lives on the Devon coast, disappears while out on her sailing boat. Eden and Apple have not spoken in years – he doesn't even know that she has a nine-year-old son, Finn. But he knows that she was a good enough sailor never to neglect to wear a life jacket. So he decides to investigate, and as he does so, it emerges that he is Finn's only living relative. The relationship between Eden and the stubborn boy are at the heart of this exceptional crime story. Shaw was always a fine writer, but this is his best work. It's my finest crime novel of the year – so far. The Inside Man by Trevor Wood (Quercus £20, 448pp) DCI Jack Parker, who is only 53 and suffers from early- onset dementia but hasn't told his colleagues in Newcastle about it, returns for a second compelling story. Still haunted by the death of his DS, and desperate to track down the hit-and-run driver who killed her, he sends her replacement, Emma Steel, on an undercover mission to get close to the local gangster who Parker believes may have had a hand in the killing. He is then called in to investigate the disappearance of a mother and her young son. Meanwhile, Parker is taking part in the trial of a new dementia drug and debating whether to move back in with his wife and son. This is stunning storytelling, with a hero to cherish. Gunner by Alan Parks (Baskerville £16.99, 288pp) Set against the bleak backdrop of the German bombing of Glasgow and the Clyde shipyards during the Second World War, this compelling story introduces Joe Gunner, a former police detective. He has returned to his native Scottish city as a war veteran – with a dependence on morphine because of a damaged left leg and one eye covered by a patch. He is barely off the train from London when he is dragged into an investigation to identify a body – a man with almost no face and the tips of his fingers cut off. Add in Glasgow's warring gangsters and MI5 espionage and you have the ingredients of a striking drama that is destined for a series and, possibly, for television – Foyle's War, but with a sharper, darker edge.
