Paris Saint-Germain left no doubt it was Europe's top club with a historic victory in the Champions League.
Now, PSG is intent on conquering the world.
Les Rouge-et-Bleu turned in a dominating performance at the Club World Cup on Sunday, brushing aside Lionel Messi and Inter Miami with a first-half blitz that resulted in a 4-0 victory.
While the European powerhouses complained mightily about having to play in the newly expanded tournament at the end of a grueling season, PSG is taking the 32-team competition seriously.
Outside of a 1-0 loss to Brazilian club Botafogo in group play, PSG has won three games by a cumulative 10-0 since arriving in the United States.
'It's clear that this is a historic season for us. We intend to continue making history with this competition," PSG coach Luis Enrique said through an interpreter. "We're fighting to claim silverware. This season is very long for all the teams. But we're excited to be here.'
PSG advanced to the quarterfinals, where it will face either Bayern Munich or Brazilian club Flamengo next Saturday in Atlanta.
There was a huge buildup to the game against Messi, who played two seasons at PSG before making the move to South Florida in the twilight of his brilliant career and was facing his former coach at Barcelona.
But even with an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner leading the way, the club from Major League Soccer was simply no match for a deep, talented squad that routed Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final a month ago.
João Neves scored a pair of goals for PSG, setting the tone with a header off a free kick just six minutes into the match.
He scored again in the 39th, and Inter Miami totally fell apart in the closing minutes of the opening half. Tomás Avilés gave up an own-goal on a cross in front of the net, and Achraf Hakimi added to his brilliant campaign with another tally in stoppage time.
With a four-goal cushion at the break, PSG could start looking ahead to its next match.
'We will play our game no matter who is against us," Neves said. "We are confident.'
Messi barely touched the ball in the first half as the Herons struggled mightily just to get across the just to get across the halfway line.
The pink-clad fans in the crowd of 65,574 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium tried to stir the underdogs with occasional chants of 'Messi! Messi! Messi!' but it did little good.
PSG was simply too good.
'With their youthful players and high caliber and an amazing coach, they didn't let us relax for one second,' Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said through an interpreter. 'I feel like this is a team that will be remembered.'
In another encouraging sign for PSG, French star Ousmane Dembélé got his first action of the tournament after sustaining a left quadriceps injury while on duty with the national team. He came on a substitute for Neves in the 62nd minute.
'It is very important for us to have injured players come back into the fold,' Enrique said. 'We have to focus on our goals and get our players back.'
Especially when there's another trophy within reach.

PSG rolls past Lionel Messi and Inter Miami to reach Club World Cup quarterfinals

Paris Saint-Germain steamrolled Lionel Messi's Inter Miami 4-0 on Sunday to reach the Club World Cup quarterfinals, where it will face Bayern Munich, which overcame a spirited challenge from Flamengo. Bayern defeated the Brazilians 4-2 in Sunday's other last 16 clash behind a brace from Harry Kane. Miami hoped Messi's magic could help it produce an unlikely result against the Argentine star's former club, but the Major League Soccer side was dismantled by Luis Enrique's team. Messi and his former Barcelona teammates Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba did well to reach the last 16, but the gulf in quality between the teams was laid bare in Atlanta. Joao Neves netted twice for PSG, which benefited from a Tomas Aviles own goal, while Achraf Hakimi was also on target for the French treble-winner. "Clearly, we are experiencing a historic season for our club, we aim to go far in this competition," Luis Enrique said. Messi was the main draw, as fans chanted his name, and most of the 66,000 in the crowd were clad in Miami's hot pink, interspersed with Argentina shirts. PSG dominated from the start and took the lead when Neves nodded in unmarked at the back post from a free kick. With the Ligue 1 champion pressing high and keeping possession, Javier Mascherano's Miami found it hard to get Messi involved. The 38-year-old's intermittent interventions were not enough to hold back the Parisian tide. PSG doubled its lead in the 39th minute when veteran holding midfielder Busquets got his footwork wrong, with Ruiz stealing the ball and combining with Bradley Barcola to set up Neves again. "He played a very good game ... in this team everyone can score and make decisive contributions," Osumane Dembele said. Aviles then deflected Desire Doue's cross into his own net, and Hakimi netted the fourth before halftime to put PSG out of sight. Messi, an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, produced a brilliant pass for Suarez early in the second half, but the Uruguayan could not finish to offer Miami a lifeline. Despite the impossibility of a comeback Messi seemed determined to bow out with a bang. When Suarez was fouled on the edge of the box, Messi had the chance to repeat his free kick winner against Porto in the group stage, but his effort hit the wall. Luis Enrique sent on winger Dembele for his first appearance at the tournament after a hamstring injury, but the Frenchman looked rusty, and PSG could not extend its advantage. Miami's second-half performance was respectable, and the defeat was by a lesser margin than the French side's 5-0 thrashing of Inter Milan in the Champions League final. "I think we were above the expectations people had for us (at the tournament) ... obviously we were facing the best team in the world playing football right now, so it was difficult," Alba said. Kane produced two lethal finishes as Bayern beat out Filipe Luis' Flamengo side, which was backed by a passionate following at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. "It's going to be another tough game — PSG have had an amazing season," Kane said. "We played them earlier in the year, and we came out on top. "We know it's going to be difficult, but we can beat anyone when we're at our level, we've shown that in the tournament so far." Erick Pulgar headed Joshua Kimmich's corner into his own net, and Kane's deflected drive flew into the bottom corner as Bayern took a two-goal lead. The three-time Copa Libertadores champion battled back as Gerson smashed a shot past Manuel Neuer to delight most of the crowd of 61,000. Leon Goretzka restored Bayern's lead, but former Chelsea midfielder Jorginho reeled in the German club once more from the penalty spot. Kane settled the contest with a fine touch and finish to set up the quarterfinal clash against PSG. "We have to rest now, recover from this game, use every single day we've got to rebuild our energy," Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said. "Then what more do you want? Top top sides playing each other on the biggest stage — we'll be ready for that."

Chelsea downs Benfica to reach Club World Cup quarters after weather chaos

Chelsea defeated Benfica 4-1 in extra time in a chaotic weather-disrupted last-16 clash to book their place in the Club World Cup quarterfinals on Saturday. Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored in extra time to send Premier League side into a quarterfinal clash against Brazil's Palmeiras. Chelsea's late burst of scoring settled a game that took four hours, 39 minutes to complete at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, after a near two-hour weather delay. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca was left satisfied with his team's victory but slammed the delay that turned the tilt into a near five-hour marathon. "I think it's a joke, it's not football," Maresca said. "For 85 minutes we were in control of the game. We created enough chances to win the game. Then after the break, the game changed — for me personally, it's not football." Earlier, Chelsea had been seemingly poised for victory after Reece James' opportunistic second-half free-kick had left it 1-0 up with four minutes of regulation time remaining. But just as Chelsea began to think about a quarterfinal assignment, the arrival of a storm over Charlotte triggered local safety protocols, which required the game to be halted. It marked the sixth occasion during the Club World Cup that a game has been disrupted by a weather warning. "If you are already suspending, six, seven, eight games it probably means there is something that is not working well," Maresca said. "Because in a football game, it's not normal to suspend the game." When play resumed just under two hours later, a revitalized Benfica grabbed an injury-time equalizer after Chelsea substitute Malo Gusto was adjudged to have handled in the penalty area following an intervention by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). Benfica's Argentine veteran Angel Di Maria stepped up to roll in an ice-cold penalty, sending the game into extra time. An end-to-end first half of extra time saw Benfica, reduced to 10 men following Gianluca Prestianni's second yellow card at the end of regulation, threaten to take the lead as it chased an improbable victory. But instead it was Nkunku who fired Chelsea back in front, with the French international bundling in from close range after Moises Caicedo's low shot squirted underneath Benfica goalkeeper Antoliy Trubin. As the game opened up, Benfica was increasingly vulnerable on the counterattack and Chelsea pounced. Neto made it 3-1 with a nerveless finish after going clean through on goal in the 114th minute, and three minutes later Dewsbury-Hall completed the rout to send Chelsea through to the last eight.
