Candlelight vigil for missing teen Pheobe Bishop after police discover human remains

News.com.au07-06-2025
A candlelight vigil will be held in honour of Queensland teenager Pheobe Bishop, after police revealed they had uncovered human remains.
Queensland Police discovered the remains, believed to be the missing 17-year-old, about 2.30pm on Friday near the Good Night Scrub National Park.
Ms Bishop was last seen near Bundaberg airport on May 15, with her roommates James Wood, 34, and Tanika Bromley, 33, being charged over her death.
On Sunday, members of the community in Gin Gin, where the teen was residing, will gather from 4pm at the Kolan Community Park for a candlelight vigil.
Attendees have been encouraged to wear bright colours and 'butterflies' in honour of the teen.
News of the event triggered an outpouring of support from an already shattered community.
'May the love and light of the community surround Pheobe's family and friends during this difficult time,' one person said on Facebook.
Another added: 'Words cannot describe the pain and suffering that your family would be feeling right now'.
It comes after police on Friday charged Ms Bishop's roommates with one count each of murder overt the teens death, as well as interfering with a corpse.
Police will allege the pair moved the teen's body more than once.
In a major breakthrough, police on Friday revealed they had discovered human remains after scouring 'unforgiving' terrain.
Detective Inspector Craig Mansfield said the remains had been tested and 'identified as being human remains'.
'We have been in contact with Pheobe's family and advised them of this development,' he said.
'Understandably, this has caused great distress to them.'
Inspector Mansfield said technological analysis and on-ground mapping prompted officers to expand their search into a new area.
He confirmed the remains were located in bushland and had not been buried.

Police investigating alleged assault on young boy in Cairns childcare centre

Queensland police are investigating after a child was allegedly injured at a Cairns childcare centre last week. Police said initial information suggested a child "sustained minor injuries" at the Mayfield Early Education centre on Fretwell Road in the Cairns suburb of White Rock last Thursday. It is alleged the boy was struck with a mop. A Mayfield Early Education spokesperson said a worker at the centre was stood down after the alleged incident on Thursday and the employee was fired on Friday. "We ran our investigation and interviewed the educator on Friday which resulted in termination of their employment," they said in a statement. The spokesperson said it was working with the Queensland Police Service and other authorities. "On Monday morning we reached out to the family involved to offer support through this situation," they said. "Given the need to protect the privacy of those involved we will not be making any further public comment on the matter." The child's family has declined to comment. A spokesman for the Queensland Department of Education said the Early Childhood Regulatory Authority was undertaking an investigation and had referred the allegation to Queensland police. "The safety and protection of all children in Queensland early childhood education and care services is our number one priority," the spokesman said. "Where steps are inadequate to ensure the health and safety of children, the Queensland Early Childhood Regulatory Authority does not hesitate to take robust and appropriate action, including prohibition and prosecution."

Ex-beauty queen shot dead in front of baby daughter and her partner while in Ecuador

An ex-beauty queen has been shot dead while travelling with her young daughter and partner in Ecuador amid the country's ongoing struggle with drug cartel violence. Esther Gabriela Murillo Cruz, 25, was ambushed by two men on a motorbike who sprayed the vehicle she was travelling in with bullets. The model was rushed to a local hospital in Manta just after 3am on Saturday where she was treated for gunshot wounds to her vital organs. But despite medics' best efforts, she was soon pronounced dead. Her 30-year-old partner and one-year-old baby are also believed to have been hospitalised in the attack, local reports said. The ex-beauty queen had been travelling on the Circunvalación highway, in Manabí – one of Ecuador's hardest hit cities by organised crime. Authorities have since launched an urgent investigation into the attack to determine the perpetrators and their motive. Esther won three local beauty competitions and became the 'Queen of Marabi province' in 2018. News of her death has left her tens of thousands social media followers devastated – with many calling on leaders to do more to combat crime in the area. One distraught commenter said: 'How sad! And such a girl, with a whole life ahead of her!' While another wrote: 'Comfort and strength to your family'. The embattled country has seen its murder rate rise eight-fold as brutal gangs battle to control the cocaine trade. Earlier this year, a man believed to be a British national was lynched and burnt alive in a popular eco-tourism area on the country's border with Colombia. A mob stormed a police station in Sucumbios Province where he was being held in custody for an alleged shooting, before dragging him out and setting him alight in front of police officers too terrified to intervene. The shocking scenes are all too common for a nation whose murder rates now rank among the highest in the world, with civilians regularly caught in the crossfire and streets turning lawless as cops struggle to keep up with criminality and violence. In 2023 alone, the country saw more than 8,000 deaths, an eightfold rise compared to 2018, putting it above other nations famed for their cartel violence such as Mexico and Colombia. And a new record for the most killings in a single month was broken in January, with 781 killings. After a series of riots saw the gangs take control of prisons, rival factions have waged bitter warfare against each other, carrying out brutal medieval-style executions and hanging bodies from bridges to mark their territory and terrify rivals. Despite attempts by the country's government and armed forces to crack down on the cartels, Ecuador remains the world's number one exporter of cocaine. Televised takeover The most dramatic example of the escalating violence occurred in January last year, when masked gunmen broke into a television studio, threatening the presenter while live on air and trying to force him to read out a warning to police. 'They were kids – kids with guns,' the presenter, Luis Calderón, later told the Guardian. 'They seemed proud of what they were doing … it was as if they were playing a game – only with extremely dangerous and lethal weapons,' he recalled. Police successfully made 13 arrests following the attack, which also happened in the port city of Gauyaquil. Then in May, a further eight were killed after a bar was sprayed with bullets where people had gathered to celebrate a birthday in the coastal province of Santa Elena. Many of the shootings are carried out in a display of dominance, terrifying rivals and keeping local residents subdued. Gangs such as Los Tiguerones, Los Lobos, and Los Choneros have even resorted to gruesome tactics such as cutting out the hearts of captured rivals and showing off the killings on social media. Other victims may find themselves being hanged from bridges, their limp bodies serving as a warning to anyone entering the cartel's territory. While South America has long been associated with drug-related violence, Ecuador for years remained relatively peaceful and free from any serious gang violence.

Trial for accused baby murderers Reinhardt Albert Bosch, wife Noemi Kondacs delayed after ‘competent counsel' issue

A new delay has rocked the case of a married couple charged with the murder of their infant son, after lawyers for one of the accused killers told a court he was unable to find 'competent counsel' ahead of a planned trial. Reinhardt Albert Bosch and his wife, Noemi Kondacs, are both charged with the murder of their infant son Rhuan Immanuel Bosch in 2022. The seven-month-old baby was found dead with 'significant' injuries at the couple's house in Yugar – north of Brisbane – on November 3 that year. Mr Bosch has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and torture – which relates to allegations he tortured Rhuan on dates between April 11 and November 3, 2022. During a prior arraignment, Ms Kondacs chose not to enter pleas to charges of murder and failing to supply the necessaries of life. Supreme Court Justice Peter Callaghan entered pleas of not guilty on her behalf. On Tuesday, during a case review at Brisbane Supreme Court, Ms Kondacs was brought into the courtroom dressed in the same white blouse with a floral pattern worn during previous appearances. Ashkan Tai, representing Mr Bosch, requested an adjournment as he revealed he had not been able to find counsel who would be able to represent him for a planned 10-day trial beginning in September. He said further matters concerning Mr Bosch's case needed to be addressed prior to any trial proceeding. 'Unfortunately, the difficulty that I am faced with is I am unable to find competent counsel to really be available to take on a matter such as this, in that time,' Mr Tai said. Crown prosecutor Elizabeth Kelso said the Crown was ready to proceed, but it was important Mr Bosch was 'properly and competently' represented, due to the seriousness of the charges. Asked if she had anything to say about the adjournment, Ms Kondacs – who is self-represented – told the court: 'Your Honour, it doesn't make a difference to me.' Supreme Court Justice Lincoln Crowley granted the adjournment, noting he found it 'very hard to see there's no competent counsel that could be retained in the matter'. 'I accept what the Crown says, in the circumstances it is in everyone's interest that counsel is retained, given the seriousness of the charges and noting there is a co-accused,' he said. The matter will return for a further pre-trial hearing on September 16 and 17. Ms Kondacs has refused to seek legal representation during prior mentions before the court, despite being urged by Justice Callaghan to consider any legal advice During a previous appearance in April last year, Justice Callaghan asked: 'I'm intrigued … because for a charge of this seriousness I wonder why you wouldn't get legal advice?'
