82 people guised as saints arrested in Dehradun under 'Operation Kalanemi'

Under 'Operation Kalanemi', launched by the Uttarakhand government, police here on Sunday arrested 34 more people, guised as sadhus and saints, to allegedly cheat people, officials said.
With this, a total of 82 fake babas have been arrested under the operation in Dehradun, officials said.
Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Singh said the drive was launched on Thursday following Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami's instructions to take strict action against those exploiting public faith under the guise of religion.
"Multiple teams have been formed, and action is being taken at locations where inputs are received about such impostors playing with people's sentiments," Singh said.
He added that among the 34 arrested on Sunday, 23 were residents of other states.
In the last three days, 82 such individuals have been arrested from different areas of the district, and legal action is being taken against them under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the SSP said.
Among those arrested is a Bangladeshi national, Rukn Rakam alias Shah Alam, who was apprehended on Friday from the Sahaspur area of Dehradun district.
The SSP said the campaign would continue, especially in light of the ongoing Char Dham Yatra and Kanwar Yatra, during which such fake babas are reportedly becoming more active.
Launching the campaign on Thursday, the chief minister said, "Just as the 'asur' (demon) Kalanemi tried to mislead people by appearing as a saint, there are many such 'Kalanemis' in today's society who are committing crimes in the name of religion.

Although not named in Foysal's case, Shamin's alleged TTP links emerged during interrogation. With a long history of militancy cases, arms training, and reported efforts to set up extremist camps in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, Shamin is also known for his connections with separatist groups like the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF). He had been out on bail since October 2024.

Teen files defamation complaint after nude photos leaked on Instagram
Surat: A 19-year-old woman from Dindoli has filed a defamation complaint against a Mumbai resident, Sahil Patel, for allegedly taking her nude photos without consent and circulating them on Instagram. After she moved to Surat in Dec 2024 following her father's retirement, Patel continued to harass her and eventually shared the explicit photos online when she refused to comply with his demands. The woman, who works as a receptionist at a commercial establishment in Dindoli, had stopped communicating with Patel in 2023. In retaliation, he began stalking her and her sister. In April 2023, the victim's sister filed a complaint with Andheri police after Patel allegedly made a video of her. A similar incident followed in June 2023, when Patel created a disturbance during the victim's tuition class, prompting her to approach the Vile Parle police. He later apologized, and the victim resumed contact with him, which eventually led to a relationship. While residing in Surat, the victim stayed in touch with Patel over video calls. During one such call, he allegedly coerced her into appearing nude and secretly took screenshots. When she refused to repeat the act, Patel began threatening to leak the images. Police said Patel created a fake Instagram account through which he shared the victim's nude pictures and reels with her cousin, and later circulated them to several of her friends in Mumbai. Following the incident, the victim approached Dindoli police and filed a complaint under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act.

BSF team foils infiltration bid by 26 B'deshis
Shillong: A total of 26 Bangladeshi nationals and four Indian touts were apprehended by the 22 Battalion of the BSF, Meghalaya, successfully foiled an infiltration bid along the bordering area of West Garo Hills district. "Acting on specific intelligence inputs, BSF personnel at Matchokpara on Hill Road observed three vehicles travelling from the Purakhasia side towards Barengapara along SH-12. The team swiftly intercepted the vehicles and discovered that 26 Bangladeshi nationals were being facilitated by four Indian touts in an attempt to illegally enter India. All individuals involved in the infiltration attempt have been apprehended," a statement issued by the BSF said on Tuesday. "This successful operation stands as a testament to the unwavering vigilance, operational efficiency, and dedication of BSF Meghalaya in safeguarding national security. The operation underscores the critical role of BSF in combating trans-border crimes and thwarting illegal infiltration attempts along the Indo-Bangladesh border," the note further read. The BSF regularly conducts such operations, highlighting its consistent efforts to maintain border security and prevent illegal activities across the India-Bangladesh frontier.
