Leighton Meester opens up about Michelle Trachtenberg's death for first time
The 39-year-old died at the end of February, after being found 'unconscious and unresponsive' by police in New York.
Her official cause of death was revealed last month as complications from diabetes mellitus.
Following the tragic news, many of the late actress' colleagues and close friends shared tributes on social media, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Sarah Michelle Gellar and Gossip Girl's Blake Lively and Ed Westwick.
In a new interview, Meester – who played Blair Waldorf opposite Trachtenberg's Georgia Sparks – described the loss as 'devastating'.
'It's devastating,' she told Flaunt Magazine. 'She was a wonderful, talented person, and everyone loved her. It's very, very sad for everyone who knew her.
'Now, I can see that [the show's legacy] continues – in some ways, even more so than back then – to live on, which is incredible.'
Gossip Girl originally ran for six seasons between 2007 and 2012, with Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford, Taylor Momsen, Kelly Rutherford, Matthew Settle and Jessica Szohr also in the cast.
Trachtenberg became a firm fan favorite thanks to her role of a young socialite, who would regularly stir up trouble for her pals.
Unpacking the role in a 2009 interview, the late star revealed how much fun she had stepping into Georgina's villainous heels.
'It's kind of easy to be evil when you're saying evil things,' she told Seventeen Magazine. 'It's definitely a lot more fun than playing the good girl. I love the reaction you get.
'I never understood why some actors don't want to play villains or evil characters.'
Trachtenberg's Gossip Girl colleagues were among the first to publicly pay tribute after her death earlier this year.
'Everything she did, she did 200%,' Lively posted on Instagram.
'She laughed the fullest at someone's joke, she faced authority head on when she felt something was wrong, she cared deeply about her work, she was proud to be a part of this community and industry as painful as it could be sometimes, she was fiercely loyal to her friends and brave for those she loved, she was big and bold and distinctly herself.

Crawford added: 'Michelle was one of a kind. I remember her coming on set for the first time and just absolutely owning it.
'She was a force of nature and just so so unapologetically funny and magnetic… remembering those years with a big smile. Just a terrible loss. Love you.'

The private testimony, which may remain under seal, took place behind closed doors with only legal representatives, a court reporter, and a videographer present. The deposition marks a dramatic milestone in the escalating legal saga between the two stars. Despite the dismissed suits, tensions remain high — and public. Back in May, Baldoni's attorney, Bryan Freedman, made headlines with a provocative suggestion: that Lively's deposition be held live at Madison Square Garden, with proceeds going to organizations supporting victims of domestic abuse. 'Since Ms. Lively is open to testifying, let's make it count,' he said at the time. Though the MSG event never happened, Freedman confirmed this week that Baldoni was determined to be physically present for Lively's deposition – a clear signal that he intends to keep the pressure on ahead of their scheduled trial in March 2026. ITV Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway opens up on 'traumatic' ordeal after being mugged
The presenter revealed the horrific ordeal on Good Morning Britain. Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway has disclosed a shocking experience where her mobile phone was stolen. During a chat with Strictly Come Dancing star Michelle Tsiakkas, who had her own device grabbed from her grasp just weeks earlier, Kate disclosed she had endured a similar ordeal. Michelle posted on social media that she was heading to the dentist when she pulled out her phone to check directions, only to have it snatched from her hand. "Within about five to ten seconds of me taking it out, it was grabbed, gone," she disclosed on Thursday's Good Morning Britain. "I'm generally quite aware as a person, I look around me, but you just can't predict these things," reports the Daily Mirror. Elsewhere in the interview, which also included a police officer explaining what to do if someone does have their phone snatched in London, Kate opened up about her ordeal and felt the police weren't very helpful. She said, "That has not been my experience. Is there something different if things are swiped off you physically? "I've had phones stolen in London in a bag, I've tried to report it, and they've said, 'Do you want the insurance code number?' There was no sense that police were going to come, look at the area, see where it might be." Speaking about how she felt at the time, Michelle went on: 'I was quite traumatised, because it's a shock, you don't expect it, it's an invasion of your personal space.' 'When it happened, I felt like I lost the strength in my legs,' she explained. Her initial thoughts were to cancel her bank accounts and SIM and let her worried mum know what had happened before rushing to her appointment rather than calling the police. She also didn't think it would be worth the time reporting the incident, having heard friends in similar situations who hadn't had their phones recovered after telling the police. The Strictly star had previously revealed she had been left 'scared and helpless'. 'This was a couple of days ago, and I've just about mentally recovered from that. It was quite traumatising on the day,' she said on Instagram after the incident. 'It wasted my whole day and made me feel awful, scared, helpless, and I don't want the same to happen to you.' She added, 'My phone got stolen. I mean I see it happening all the time but it's just one of those things that you just never think it's gonna happen to you and then it does.' Wondering if maybe she was an 'easy target', she went on: 'My heart just sank. I tried to like reach for it and that made me fall on my knees on the floor and graze my knee.
