Leighton Meester opens up about Michelle Trachtenberg's death for first time
The 39-year-old died at the end of February, after being found 'unconscious and unresponsive' by police in New York.
Her official cause of death was revealed last month as complications from diabetes mellitus.
Following the tragic news, many of the late actress' colleagues and close friends shared tributes on social media, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Sarah Michelle Gellar and Gossip Girl's Blake Lively and Ed Westwick.
In a new interview, Meester – who played Blair Waldorf opposite Trachtenberg's Georgia Sparks – described the loss as 'devastating'.
'It's devastating,' she told Flaunt Magazine. 'She was a wonderful, talented person, and everyone loved her. It's very, very sad for everyone who knew her.
'Now, I can see that [the show's legacy] continues – in some ways, even more so than back then – to live on, which is incredible.'
Gossip Girl originally ran for six seasons between 2007 and 2012, with Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford, Taylor Momsen, Kelly Rutherford, Matthew Settle and Jessica Szohr also in the cast.
Trachtenberg became a firm fan favorite thanks to her role of a young socialite, who would regularly stir up trouble for her pals.
Unpacking the role in a 2009 interview, the late star revealed how much fun she had stepping into Georgina's villainous heels.
'It's kind of easy to be evil when you're saying evil things,' she told Seventeen Magazine. 'It's definitely a lot more fun than playing the good girl. I love the reaction you get.
'I never understood why some actors don't want to play villains or evil characters.'
Trachtenberg's Gossip Girl colleagues were among the first to publicly pay tribute after her death earlier this year.
'Everything she did, she did 200%,' Lively posted on Instagram.
'She laughed the fullest at someone's joke, she faced authority head on when she felt something was wrong, she cared deeply about her work, she was proud to be a part of this community and industry as painful as it could be sometimes, she was fiercely loyal to her friends and brave for those she loved, she was big and bold and distinctly herself.
'Time passes. You take for granted that you get the chance to see an old friend. To paraphrase, the real tragedies in life are the ones that blindside you on an idle Tuesday. Hold those you love and have loved dear. More Trending
'The world lost a deeply sensitive and good person in Michelle. May her work and her huge heart be remembered by those who were lucky enough to experience her fire.'
'So sad to hear of the passing of @MichelleTrachtenberg. Sending prayers,' Westwick said on his own page.
Crawford added: 'Michelle was one of a kind. I remember her coming on set for the first time and just absolutely owning it.
'She was a force of nature and just so so unapologetically funny and magnetic… remembering those years with a big smile. Just a terrible loss. Love you.'

Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni 'come face-to-face' for first time since feud
In a development worthy of a courtroom drama script, Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni came face-to-face today for the first time since their public fallout. The tense reunion took place inside a law office in Manhattan for Lively's deposition as part of her case against Baldoni, following drama during the filming of It Ends With Us. The pair, who starred in the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel of the same name last year, have been embroiled in a bitter feud in recent months. In December, the Gossip Girl actress, 37, launched legal proceedings against the 41-year-old – who also served as director – over claims she suffered 'severe emotional distress and pain, humiliation, embarrassment, belittlement, frustration and mental anguish'. He denied all claims and filed a countersuit against her, husband Ryan Reynolds and their publicist, Leslie Sloane – alleging extortion and defamation – as well as separate documents against the New York Times. According to People Magazine, Judge Lewis J Liman granted a motional to dismiss the $400m countersuit, as well as the defamation filing against the publication. Now, according to reports from TMZ and ABC News, Baldoni made the decision to attend Lively's deposition in person today at her legal team's office in New York. The private testimony, which may remain under seal, took place behind closed doors with only legal representatives, a court reporter, and a videographer present. The deposition marks a dramatic milestone in the escalating legal saga between the two stars. Despite the dismissed suits, tensions remain high — and public. Back in May, Baldoni's attorney, Bryan Freedman, made headlines with a provocative suggestion: that Lively's deposition be held live at Madison Square Garden, with proceeds going to organizations supporting victims of domestic abuse. 'Since Ms. Lively is open to testifying, let's make it count,' he said at the time. Though the MSG event never happened, Freedman confirmed this week that Baldoni was determined to be physically present for Lively's deposition – a clear signal that he intends to keep the pressure on ahead of their scheduled trial in March 2026. More Trending Cameras will not be allowed in the courtroom, but both Lively and Baldoni have committed to taking the stand. Lively's attorney, Mike Gottlieb, previously confirmed that Lively intends to testify when the case finally goes to trial. While today's deposition was closed to the public, the symbolic weight of Baldoni's in-person attendance hasn't gone unnoticed. Representatives for Lively, Baldoni, and Reynolds have yet to comment on today's proceedings. Got a story? ITV Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway opens up on 'traumatic' ordeal after being mugged
The presenter revealed the horrific ordeal on Good Morning Britain. Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway has disclosed a shocking experience where her mobile phone was stolen. During a chat with Strictly Come Dancing star Michelle Tsiakkas, who had her own device grabbed from her grasp just weeks earlier, Kate disclosed she had endured a similar ordeal. Michelle posted on social media that she was heading to the dentist when she pulled out her phone to check directions, only to have it snatched from her hand. "Within about five to ten seconds of me taking it out, it was grabbed, gone," she disclosed on Thursday's Good Morning Britain. "I'm generally quite aware as a person, I look around me, but you just can't predict these things," reports the Daily Mirror. Elsewhere in the interview, which also included a police officer explaining what to do if someone does have their phone snatched in London, Kate opened up about her ordeal and felt the police weren't very helpful. She said, "That has not been my experience. Is there something different if things are swiped off you physically? "I've had phones stolen in London in a bag, I've tried to report it, and they've said, 'Do you want the insurance code number?' There was no sense that police were going to come, look at the area, see where it might be." Speaking about how she felt at the time, Michelle went on: 'I was quite traumatised, because it's a shock, you don't expect it, it's an invasion of your personal space.' 'When it happened, I felt like I lost the strength in my legs,' she explained. Her initial thoughts were to cancel her bank accounts and SIM and let her worried mum know what had happened before rushing to her appointment rather than calling the police. She also didn't think it would be worth the time reporting the incident, having heard friends in similar situations who hadn't had their phones recovered after telling the police. The Strictly star had previously revealed she had been left 'scared and helpless'. 'This was a couple of days ago, and I've just about mentally recovered from that. It was quite traumatising on the day,' she said on Instagram after the incident. 'It wasted my whole day and made me feel awful, scared, helpless, and I don't want the same to happen to you.' She added, 'My phone got stolen. I mean I see it happening all the time but it's just one of those things that you just never think it's gonna happen to you and then it does.' Wondering if maybe she was an 'easy target', she went on: 'My heart just sank. I tried to like reach for it and that made me fall on my knees on the floor and graze my knee. 'I think my reflex was just to swear and then scream give me back my phone and clearly you know that didn't work. He just left.' Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.

Lioness champion Michelle Agyemang's signature style is inspiring a new football trend
From an Essex pitch to now a Euros champ - Michelle Agyemang's rise has inspired many girls at her old club, but not only in her football skills but down to her iconic sock look. Michelle Agyemang's influence both on and off the pitch continues to expand, but prior to her triumph at the Euros, the young striker has been setting a trend at the very club where she began her journey. Michelle has been named UEFA's Young Player of the Tournament following England Women's Euro 2025 success, with the 19-year-old striker earning recognition not only for her crucial strikes, but for motivating countless young girls across the nation. On two occasions during the Euros, she delivered when it mattered most for the Lionesses, initially by netting the equaliser in the quarter-final clash with Sweden, before producing a 96th-minute goal in the semi-final against Italy. Each time, she celebrated in her distinctive fashion - socks pulled down to her ankles, shin pads barely visible, leaving opposing defences utterly stunned. Now, back in South Ockendon, Essex, where her journey commenced, that identical style is rapidly gaining popularity. Brandon Groves FC, where Michelle previously featured for the boys' side, has witnessed an influx of girls embracing football, with many adopting her approach, not only in ability but in appearance. For more stories like this subscribe to our weekly newsletter, The Weekly Gulp, for a curated roundup of trending stories, poignant interviews, and viral lifestyle picks from The Mirror's Audience U35 team delivered straight to your inbox. "A few of them play with the socks down quite low with the small shin pads," Roy Enright, vice-chair and coach at the club, told The I Paper. "A lot of players are doing it at the moment, it seems to be the fashion. The girls are loving it - we have our own little team chat and it was going mad when she scored." Her success is only accelerating the growth of Roy's team after seeing someone from who started from their own team reach the Euro's and score on the big pitch has shown the team that with hard work, dedication and of course, ability you can achieve big. Michelle's rise has been a source of inspiration for many. Prior to the Euros, she had only one England appearance under her belt, a debut where she scored within 41 seconds. Before jetting off to Switzerland for the final tournament, she made a point of visiting her old club's current players at St George's Park. And when she arrived, it was far from a fleeting visit. She made sure every player felt seen - chatting with them, answering questions as well as signing kits and footballs - giving each of them her full attention. Brandon Groves now has over 200 players, with more than 50 girls following in Michelle's footsteps starting with her sock style. Many of the players at Brandon Groves have only picked up football in the last couple of years - a shift that's exploded since the Lionesses' 2022 Euros win. With a once empty squad, they're now excelling with over 200 players and new enquiries landing all the time and notes its clear the Arsenal striker "will be a catalyst for even more growth." This year, the club even clinched their first piece of silverware - the Washington Trophy and they'll all be gathering in the clubhouse to celebrate Michelle's impact and the Lionesses' win.
