Rainy weather, heavy vehicles main causes of damaged roads in Malaysia
BACHOK: The Public Works Ministry (KKR) has identified prolonged rainy weather and overloaded heavy vehicles as the primary reasons for deteriorating road conditions nationwide. Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan disclosed that RM4 billion is needed for road repairs, but only RM2 billion has been allocated due to government budget constraints.
Speaking to reporters after officiating the Bachok UMNO division delegates' meeting, Ahmad Maslan emphasised the ministry's ongoing request for increased annual allocations. 'We hope for more funds each year to address ageing roads that require re-tarring,' he said.
The ministry had previously proposed redirecting Road Transport Department (JPJ) collections—such as road tax and speeding fines—toward road maintenance. However, the suggestion received no response. Ahmad Maslan added, 'If new taxes for heavy vehicles are introduced, they should be managed by the Finance or Transport Ministry.'

Jenne's articles about STAR president Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan speaking about his experience while detained under ISA won her RM2,500. Elton's article about an NGO's efforts to save turtles and sharks also won him the top prize of RM2,500. The merit prizes were won by See Hua Daily News' Yong Ted Phen, James Tseu and Ho Yin Yin as well as Utusan Borneo's Siti Aisyah Narudin, Yap Siong Han, Vivi Oliviana Najurus and Hamzah Sanudin. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor in his speech at the event called on media practitioners to carry out their duties with full integrity, guided by principles of professional and responsible journalism. He said the success and communication of government policies also depend greatly on the vital role of the media in delivering information clearly and effectively to the people. In the context of the state's development, he said the government remains committed to implementing various initiatives that benefit the people and accelerate Sabah's progress through the Sabah Maju Jaya Development Plan. 'As a partner that maintains close cooperation and strong ties with the government, the media also plays a key role in disseminating information related to the state government's development policies, particularly under the Sabah Maju Jaya Development Plan. 'Therefore, I hope this strategic cooperation will continue to be strengthened and our good relationship will be further enhanced to help the government spread important information to the people about the state's development agenda and direction. 'Media reports also help the government understand what is happening at the grassroots level and the concerns of the people. Certainly, the government always welcomes such reports and coverage from media practitioners acting as a bridge between the government and the people,' he said. ECERDC hits RM6.4bil investments in first half of 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) has achieved RM6.4 billion in realised investments in the first six months of 2025. In a statement, ECERDC said these realised investments are part of a broader pipeline of RM10.4 billion in committed investments, enabling ECERDC to exceed its annual investment target of RM10 billion for 2025. According to the council, the strong performance is expected to create 2,844 job opportunities across the region. It said the manufacturing sector is the main contributor, accounting for 59 per cent of total investments. Pahang led with realised investments worth RM4 billion, followed by Terengganu with RM1.3 billion and Kelantan with RM1.1 billion, while Johor saw investments in agriculture amounting to RM13.3 million from the development of a biocompost facility in Mersing. Key realised investments in the first six months of 2025 include a RM1 billion integrated oil refinery plant, a RM950 million tourism development, and a RM667 million facility to produce maleic anhydride in Pahang. In Kelantan, an RM1 billion 84-megawatt mini hydroelectric plant is being developed, while Terengganu secured an RM638 million investment for the processing of pulverised quartz. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said ECERDC continues to play a vital role in accelerating inclusive growth across the east coast region. "The investments secured signal that ECER remains a high-potential growth corridor for Malaysia. "These efforts are aligned with our national commitment to balanced regional development, ensuring that all Malaysians benefit from economic progress," he said after chairing the first ECER Council Meeting for 2025 in Putrajaya today. In tandem with its investment success, ECERDC said it is completing eight strategic and impactful projects in 2025, in line with the strategic thrusts outlined under the ECER Development Plan. Under the development plan, to enhance food security, ECERDC said it has completed the Goat Milk Collection Centres in Ketereh and Pasir Puteh, Kelantan (April 2025) and is undertaking the final stages of the Jemaluang Dairy Valley in Johor to strengthen the region's agro-based value chains. Supporting the development of new tourism destinations, the council said several projects are on track for delivery, including the Cherating Turtle Information and Conservation Centre in Pahang (April 2025), the Kuala Terengganu City Centre (KTCC) Promenade Phase 1, the Pulau Pemanggil Jetty in Mersing, and upgrading works on the access road to Johor's Endau Rompin National Park from Kahang to Sungai Emas. This includes the construction of the Palekbang–Kota Bharu Bridge, a catalytic project aimed at improving cross-river connectivity and unlocking economic opportunities in Kelantan, which began earlier this year and is progressing well. Under the high-value manufacturing and hard-to-abate thrust, ECERDC said it is strengthening the industrial ecosystem through the expansion of Kerteh Biopolymer Park (KBP) in Terengganu, supporting industries such as biopolymer, petrochemical, and advanced materials. It said the Phase 4A Package 1 was completed in 2024, while the SME Complex Phase 1B is nearing completion by mid-2025, and Phase 4A Package 2 is currently underway. ECERDC said the project is expected to attract RM4.4 billion in investments by 2029. In enhancing regional connectivity, the Kuala Terengganu Airport Road (Package 2) is under development to improve access and support the region's tourism and logistics ecosystems. ECERDC chief executive officer Datuk Baidzawi Che Mat said these strategic developments are laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth across ECER. "By strengthening key industrial ecosystems, improving accessibility, and supporting community-focused initiatives, we are enhancing the region's appeal to investors while delivering meaningful improvements to local communities," it added.

Anwar urges civil servants to back Kota Madani plan
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged civil servants to support the Kota Madani housing initiative. "Recently, we launched Kota Madani and as usual, the issue has become the target of political attacks. "I truly do not understand why it cannot be supported, especially when it does not place a direct burden on the government. "This is why I ask civil servants to consider this carefully and support the concept, as many are uncomfortable with it, perhaps representing other contractors or other interests," he said in his speech during the monthly assembly. Last week Anwar launched the Kota Madani development project in Precinct 19. It is a mega initiative conceptualised as a smart city that is both people-friendly and environmentally conscious. The RM4 billion project will be developed by Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd (PjH) through a public-private partnership model based on the build, lease, maintain and transfer (BLMT) concept, without involving any government allocation in the initial phase. Kota Madani will feature 10,000 high-density residential quarters capable of housing more than 30,000 residents, vertical schools, and a variety of public amenities. Present were both Deputy Prime Ministers, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, as well as Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. The project, however, had received several criticisms, with opposition questioning its branding and long-term value due to its name reflecting the current administration. Following this, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the name Kota Madani chosen for the development of government quarters in Precinct 19 will be retained as the main identity for modern housing and urban development, in line with the current government's aspirations. Meanwhile, on the issue of damaged government quarters which have long plagued civil servants, Anwar said such problems have been addressed seriously by the government.
