Shankland pleased to be off the mark with a double

Lawrence Shankland hit the post in the build-up to James Wilson's opening goal after three minutes and then netted with two second-half penalties inside three minutes as Hearts beat Dunfermline Athletic 4-1 at Tynecastle in the Jambos first outing in the Premier Sports Cup, Group E.
The second is against Hamilton Academical on Tuesday (kick-off 19.45) at Cumbernauld, and the skipper argued you cannot be too critical of players at this stage of the season.
First and foremost, he told the media after Saturday's game, that it was good to get off to a winning start in the group.
He added: 'It was a good day for us in that heat. It was the first game and it was competitive, but it is still pre-season season and the boys are still trying to find that match sharpness so these games can be over analysed.
'I believe we will get there and we had a good response on the bounce back (after Dunfermline levelled at 1-1). They (The Pars) had a good travelling support, and credit to them, and it had the feel of a cup tie and that helped.'
Neil Lennon's men committed a few bodies forward during the second half and that is when Hearts were awarded two penalties (76 and 79 minutes) which swung the game in their favour but, sportingly, Shankland said: 'The scoreline was a wee bit harsh in how it reads, but it was good for us.'
He acknowledged that the Premier Sports Cup, also known as the Scottish League Cup, allows players to get games and goals 'under their belt' and he added: 'When the penalties came about I thankfully put them away.'
It was he said, instinct, which dictated where he was going to place the ball from the spot for the second award and he revealed: 'I took two steps towards the ball and thought: 'where am I going here'. I think when you are on a second penalty there is a bit of a mind game between you and the keeper.
'The guy knows me (Deniz Mehmet was a team-mate with Shankland at Dundee United) and he has obviously gambled. I even considered should I change and let somebody else take it (the second penalty), but the opportunity was too good to get a second (goal) and I was delighted to see it hit the back of the net.'
Shankland reflected that it could have been his first penalties for the club after missing against Belgian outfit Cercle Brugge in the UEFA Europa Conference League in late November last year – Brugge won 2-0 – and he said: 'My brain reminded me of that when I put the ball down (for the first spot kick) so I was probably concentrating on keeping the ball down so much and I did not quite catch it right. It was in the corner and when they hit the net you are always happy.'
Overall, Shankland said he was happy with his fitness and revealed that the newcomers, including Portugese-born forward Claudio Braga, were settling into the environment at Hearts.
He added: 'It has been a bright start and, hopefully, they keep getting stronger.'
For the record, Hamilton also got off to a winning start at the weekend, beating Stirling Albion 2-0 on the road at Forthbank Stadium with goals from Connor Smith and Kyle MacDonald after 52 and 59 minutes. Hearts are at Forthbank on Saturday (July 19, kick-off 17.15)

But the third consecutive League Cup win was marred by shocking scenes after full-time. Both clubs have confirmed that Police Scotland are dealing with an incident which left the young supporter injured. It's being widely suggested online that young Queen of the South fans were targeted and had their drum nicked by Thistle supporters. It's claimed one of the Queen of the South fans sustained a head injury in the altercation. The individual was treated by Partick Thistle's medical team inside the stadium and the club have since admitted that players and staff were shocked by the incident. A statement read: "Players and officials of Partick Thistle were appalled at the incident that occurred after the final whistle in last night's game with Queen of the South at The Wyre Stadium at Firhill. "We thank the group of home and away fans that came to the assistance of the young visiting supporter in the aftermath and also thank our first team medical staff who applied treatment in the club's physio department. Dundee boss Steven Pressley trolled by Scots football club as they blast ‘the only thing getting rattled is your club'

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) STEVEN PRESSLEY might have his first win as Dundee boss under his belt but the pressure hasn't gone away. Although this time around, it's another Scottish football CLUB who are attempting to pile it on. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 Dundee appointed Steve Pressley as manager at the beginning of June Credit: Kenny Ramsay 3 Pressley's endured a difficult start as Dee boss Credit: Michael Schofield Former Scotland star Pressley, 51, was a shock appointment as Dundee manager last month. The ex-Celtic, Hearts and Rangers defender was confirmed as Tony Docherty's replacement after the latter's shock sacking after the end of last season. There's been a big turnaround in players at Dundee with key men Lyall Cameron and Josh Mulligan among those to have moved on. Pressley might've been hoping the Premier Sports Cup would've given him the chance to make a strong start to his time in charge. But a 1-0 home defeat to Championship side Airdrieonians in the opening group match instantly piled the pressure on. And that only intensified when Pressley's side were defeated 1-0 again in their second game, this time by third tier Alloa. The back-to-back defeats ended Dundee's hopes of progression and they are OUT of the competition at the first hurdle. Last night, Pressley and his side took on Bonnyrigg Rose in an away clash and for periods, it looked like another horror result could be on the cards. Clark Robertson had given Dee the lead before Cameron Ross levelled things up for the non-league outfit, who were relegated out of the SPFL last season. Emile Acquah and Billy Koumetio both struck inside the final five minutes of the game to spare their team's blushes and give Pressley a first win in charge. Scottish Premiership club enlist Hollywood superstar to sell their £95M new stadium and hotel plans With Bonnyrigg having just replaced their pitch, the game was held at Whitehill Welfare's Ferguson Park home. But Pressley wasn't happy with THEIR surface in the aftermath of the game. After the 3-1 win, he said: "It certainly wasn't vintage. The pitch made it a very difficult night's work. "Credit to our players, they showed a really good mentality. "We found ourselves 1-1 with the clock running down and we kept pushing and going at it and in the end got a very much deserved in. "But as I said, it was a difficult evening, a real leveller the pitch. "When you come here on the back of a couple of disappointing results and the pitch being how it is, it was a real banana skin for us so as I said, well done to the players." Those comments didn't go down well at all with Whitehill Welfare. The East of Scotland League club's official X account responded directly to Dundee's post containing Pressley's post match thoughts. The club blasted: "I think our pitch is the least of your worries Steven. "Good luck for the rest of your time in charge." A Dundee fan bit back, telling Whitehill Welfare they had been "rattled" by the manager's comments. The club weren't done there, and fired back at the support. They said: "The only thing getting rattled is your club on a weekly basis. Airdrie, Alloa etc etc." Dundee close out their Premier Sports Cup group stage campaign - and indeed campaign as a whole - with a home clash with Montrose on Saturday afternoon. They then begin the Premiership season by taking on Hibs at Dens Park before a trip to face Rangers at Ibrox. 3 Whitehill Welfare weren't happy with Steven Pressley's comments Credit: X/@WHITEHILWELFARE Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Max Verstappen issues statement ahead of Belgian GP as new Red Bull F1 boss faces debut

Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing head into the Belgian Grand Prix without Christian Horner steering the ship for the first time ever, as new boss Laurent Mekies makes his competitive debut in the role Max Verstappen says he is looking forward to striking up a close working relationship with new boss Laurent Mekies. The Dutchman was speaking ahead of this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix, the first race since the bombshell news of Christian Horner being removed from his positions as team principal and CEO. ‌ The Spa-Francorchamps race is always a milestone moment for Verstappen, who is half-Belgian and sees it as one of his two home races alongside the Dutch Grand Prix. And he will be hoping to get back to winning ways at a venue which means to much to him on a personal level. ‌ But he must do so after two weeks of significant upheaval which saw Horner ousted and also plenty of intense speculation about his own future. But for now he will, like his colleagues, adjust to life under new boss Laurent Mekies, who was called up from sister team Racing Bulls to take on the top job. ‌ "I was back at the factory last week to spend some time in the sim with the team," said Verstappen as he previewed the trip to the Ardennes Forest. "I'm looking forward to working closely with Laurent." He added: "Spa is a classic and always my favourite track on the calendar, a very old school circuit where you have to do everything right to get a good lap. I enjoy the high-speed corners such as Eau Rouge, the layout which is different to other circuits and elevation changes that make the track more of a challenge to drive." Claims that Verstappen could hold a press conference in Belgium this weekend to make an announcement about his future are understood to be unfounded. But he continues to be strongly linked with a switch to Mercedes. In the immediate future, though, he and team-mate Yuki Tsunoda will get a first taste of life under a new boss in Belgium. The latter in particular will be hoping that Mekies' methods can help inspire a change in his fortunes on track, having scored just seven points since be was elevated to the seat in April. ‌ "We are coming into this race in a new era for the team and it will be good to link up again with Laurent," Tsunoda said of his former Racing Bulls boss. "We worked really well together at Racing Bulls. I know how he likes to work and our full focus is on pushing forward and for me personally to start delivering the performance we need. "Spa is a fun circuit and one that could suit us well. The Sprint always makes things tricky but the work and preparation we have done in this off time should set us up nicely. "I have spent the time off racing mixed between training very hard and using the break to mentally reset. I wanted to be the best prepared I could be coming into Spa and in better condition, mentally and physically. I am feeling strong and sharp and looking forward to these next two races before summer break."
