Punjab Pollution Control Board issues ultimatum to Ludhiana's scattered dyeing units to adopt zero-liquid-discharge technology or shift out of city.

Time of India21-05-2025
Ludhiana: The
Punjab Pollution Control Board
(PPCB) has issued a final ultimatum to nearly four-dozen scattered local dyeing units — adopt zero liquid discharge (ZLD) technology by the end of the year or shift operations outside the city.
The directive is part of an intensified crackdown to prevent
untreated industrial effluents
from contaminating the Buddha Dariya, a heavily polluted urban drain in the heart of the city that joins the Satluj. While cleaning efforts outside Ludhiana have shown significant progress, authorities are struggling to curb wastewater inflows within city limits, from small-scale dyeing units particularly.
R K Ratra, chief engineer at the PPCB, said: "Operators of these units must either install ZLD systems or relocate to designated industrial hubs.
The deadline for infrastructure setup is Sept 2025, with full compliance expected by Dec." Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal, a noted environmental activist, is spearheading efforts to restore the Buddha Dariya through community-driven 'kar sewa' (voluntary service).
Despite these efforts, several units operating in pockets such as Industrial Area, Jalandhar Bypass, and Samrala Chowk continue discharging untreated wastewater into municipal sewers, undermining the broader cleanup mission.

The owners of a few units have submitted compliance proposals to the PPCB. While a few are adopting ZLD, others prepare to move their operations outside city limits, where treated water will be repurposed for irrigation. Larger textile manufacturers, meanwhile, are opting to outsource dyeing to third-party fabricators or cease in-house processing altogether.
Notably, while the PPCB urged Ludhiana's municipal corporation to disconnect sewer lines of non-compliant units more than two years ago, no action has been taken. Officials cite pending decisions from the state govt as the reason for inaction. As the Dec 2025 deadline looms, PPCB officials have claimed that monitoring and enforcement will intensify to ensure Ludhiana's waterways are no longer used as industrial dumping grounds.

Digital India: Using tech to eliminate gap between haves and have-nots

Ten years ago, we embarked on a bold journey into uncharted territory with great conviction. While decades were spent doubting the ability of Indians to use technology, we changed this approach and trusted the ability of Indians to use technology. While decades were spent thinking that use of technology will deepen the gap between the haves and the have-nots, we changed this mindset and used technology to eliminate the gap between the haves and the have-nots. When the intent is right, innovation empowers the less empowered. When the approach is inclusive, technology brings change in the lives of those on the margins. This belief laid the foundation for Digital India : a mission to democratise access, build inclusive digital infrastructure, and opportunities for all. In 2014, internet penetration was limited, digital literacy was low, and online access to govt services was scarce. Many doubted whether a country as vast and diverse as India could truly go digital. Today, that question has been answered not just in data and dashboards, but in the lives of 140 crore Indians. From how we govern, to how we learn, transact and build, Digital India is everywhere. Bridging the Digital Divide In 2014, India had around 25 crore internet connections. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Today, that number has grown to over 97 crore. Over 42 lakh km of optical fibre cable equivalent to 11 times the distance between Earth and the Moon now connects even the most remote villages. India's 5G rollout is among the fastest in the world, with 4.8 lakh base stations installed in just two years. High-speed internet now reaches urban hubs and forward military posts alike including Galwan, Siachen and Ladakh. India Stack, which is our digital backbone, has enabled platforms like UPI, which now handles 100+ billion transactions a year. Around half of all real-time digital transactions happen in India. Through Direct Benefit Transfer, over Rs 44 lakh crore has been transferred directly to citizens, cutting out middlemen and saving Rs 3.5 lakh crore in leakages. Schemes like Svamitva have issued 2.4 crore+ property cards and mapped 6.4 lakh villages, ending years of land-related uncertainty. Democratising Opportunity for All India's digital economy is empowering MSMEs and small entrepreneurs like never before. ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce) is a revolutionary platform which opens a new window of opportunity by providing a seamless connection between huge market of buyers and sellers. GeM (Govt E-Marketplace) enables the common man to sell goods and services to all arms of govt. This not only empowers the common man with a huge market but also saves money for the govt. ONDC recently crossed 200 million transactions, with the last 100 million in just six months. From Banarasi weavers to bamboo artisans in Nagaland, sellers are now reaching customers nationwide, without middlemen or digital monopolies. GeM has also crossed Rs 1 lakh crore GMV in 50 days, with 22 lakh sellers including 1.8 lakh+ women-led MSMEs, who have fulfilled orders worth Rs 46,000 crore. Digital Public Infrastructure: India's Global Offering India's Digital Public Infrastructure - from Aadhaar , CoWIN, DigiLocker and FASTag to PM-WANI and One Nation One Subscription - is now studied and adopted globally. CoWIN enabled the world's largest vaccination drive, issuing 220 crore QR-verifiable certificates. DigiLocker, with 54 crore users, hosts 775 crore+ documents, securely and seamlessly. Through our G20 presidency, India launched the Global DPI Repository and a $25 million Social Impact Fund, helping nations across Africa and South Asia adopt inclusive digital ecosystems. Startup Power Meets Aatmanir bhar Bharat India now ranks among the top three startup ecosystems in the world, with over 1.8 lakh startups. But this is more than a startup movement, it is a tech renaissance. India is doing extremely well when it comes to AI skill penetration and AI talent concentration among our youth. Through the $1.2 billion India AI Mission, India has enabled access to 34,000 GPUs at globally unmatched prices at less than $1/GPU hour making India not just the most affordable internet economy, but also the most affordable compute destination. India has championed humanity-first AI. The New Delhi Declaration on AI promotes innovation with responsibility. We are establishing AI Centres of Excellence across the country. The Road Ahead The next decade will be even more transformative. We are moving from digital governance to global digital leadership, from India-first to India-for-the-world. Digital India has not remained a mere govt programne, it has become a people's movement. It is central to building an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, and to making India a trusted innovation partner to the world. To all innovators, entrepreneurs, and dreamers: the world is looking at India for the next digital breakthrough. Let us build what empowers. Let us solve what truly matters. Let us lead with technology that unites, includes and uplifts. (This is the full text of the PM's LinkedIn post on 10 years of Digital India)

VTU to revamp first-year engineering curriculum from 2025-26

Belagavi: The Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), one of India's largest technical universities, is set to revamp the curriculum for first-year engineering students across all its affiliated colleges starting from the academic year 2025–26, with a stronger emphasis on skill development and emerging technologies. Addressing a press conference in Belagavi on Tuesday, VTU vice-chancellor Prof S Vidyashankar said the new curriculum will be aligned with industry requirements, with inputs taken from a wide academic base. "We are implementing a skill-based curriculum that meets the expectations of the industrial sector. We consulted over 1,350 faculty members and 3,000 students to gather feedback on the proposed changes," he stated. One of the major highlights of the revised curriculum is the mandatory inclusion of artificial intelligence (AI) in all branches of engineering from the first semester. "This will equip students early on with tools relevant to the future of engineering and technology," the vice-chancellor added. Addressing the progress of VTU's earlier initiative to host 50 IT companies in its administrative building on the Belagavi campus, Prof Vidyashankar admitted that the university did not receive the anticipated response from the industry. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo "So far, only five companies set up their operations in the space provided. While the goal remains unchanged, industry participation is slower than expected," he noted. The project is part of the university's long-term effort to enhance industry-academia collaboration and foster a startup-friendly ecosystem on campus. VTU constituent college likely in Gokak The VC also hinted at the likely establishment of a constituent engineering college in Gokak town, following a proposal made by Belagavi district minister Satish Jarkiholi. "The minister assured us of land and a building in Gokak. The university will need to sanction teaching and administrative staff. I will place a proposal before the executive council shortly and a formal decision will follow," he said. Registrar (evaluation) Prof TN Sreenivasa was present. DC directs officials to expedite crop survey, promote schemes for farmers

Mandya: Deputy commissioner Kumara has directed agriculture department officials to accelerate and ensure accuracy in the ongoing crop survey. He said that crucial estimates for agricultural and horticultural crop areas, disaster compensation under the NDRF, and crop loss reports are all based on this data. Speaking at a review meeting on Tuesday, Kumara instructed that Private Residents (PRs) who have not met crop survey targets be replaced with efficient personnel. He noted encouraging progress in the 2024–25 crop survey cycle, with area coverage reaching 91.5% for the pre-monsoon season, 96.4% in monsoon, 97.7% post-monsoon, and 95.8% for summer crops. Highlighting the achievements under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), he said Rs 39.09 crore in compensation was disbursed to farmers during the 2023-24 season. For the current year, 3,708 farmers have already submitted applications, and he urged officials to launch awareness drives to expand enrolment. To spread awareness about crop insurance, jingles are being played through Raitha Sanjeevini vehicles, autorickshaws, garbage collection vans, and at KSRTC bus stands. Direct outreach is also being conducted at milk dairies, farmer societies, marketplaces, and other rural gathering points. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esta nueva alarma con cámara es casi regalada en Rafael Castillo (ver precio) Verisure Más información Undo Under the PM Formalisation of Micro food processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme, loans totalling Rs 65.4 crore and subsidies worth Rs 21.7 crore have been sanctioned to 258 farmer-entrepreneurs in the district.
