(PPCB) has issued a final ultimatum to nearly four-dozen scattered local dyeing units — adopt zero liquid discharge (ZLD) technology by the end of the year or shift operations outside the city.
The directive is part of an intensified crackdown to prevent
untreated industrial effluents
from contaminating the Buddha Dariya, a heavily polluted urban drain in the heart of the city that joins the Satluj. While cleaning efforts outside Ludhiana have shown significant progress, authorities are struggling to curb wastewater inflows within city limits, from small-scale dyeing units particularly.
R K Ratra, chief engineer at the PPCB, said: "Operators of these units must either install ZLD systems or relocate to designated industrial hubs.
The deadline for infrastructure setup is Sept 2025, with full compliance expected by Dec." Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal, a noted environmental activist, is spearheading efforts to restore the Buddha Dariya through community-driven 'kar sewa' (voluntary service).
Despite these efforts, several units operating in pockets such as Industrial Area, Jalandhar Bypass, and Samrala Chowk continue discharging untreated wastewater into municipal sewers, undermining the broader cleanup mission.

The owners of a few units have submitted compliance proposals to the PPCB. While a few are adopting ZLD, others prepare to move their operations outside city limits, where treated water will be repurposed for irrigation. Larger textile manufacturers, meanwhile, are opting to outsource dyeing to third-party fabricators or cease in-house processing altogether.
Notably, while the PPCB urged Ludhiana's municipal corporation to disconnect sewer lines of non-compliant units more than two years ago, no action has been taken. Officials cite pending decisions from the state govt as the reason for inaction. As the Dec 2025 deadline looms, PPCB officials have claimed that monitoring and enforcement will intensify to ensure Ludhiana's waterways are no longer used as industrial dumping grounds.

VTU to revamp first-year engineering curriculum from 2025-26
Belagavi: The Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), one of India's largest technical universities, is set to revamp the curriculum for first-year engineering students across all its affiliated colleges starting from the academic year 2025–26, with a stronger emphasis on skill development and emerging technologies. Addressing a press conference in Belagavi on Tuesday, VTU vice-chancellor Prof S Vidyashankar said the new curriculum will be aligned with industry requirements, with inputs taken from a wide academic base. "We are implementing a skill-based curriculum that meets the expectations of the industrial sector. We consulted over 1,350 faculty members and 3,000 students to gather feedback on the proposed changes," he stated. One of the major highlights of the revised curriculum is the mandatory inclusion of artificial intelligence (AI) in all branches of engineering from the first semester. "This will equip students early on with tools relevant to the future of engineering and technology," the vice-chancellor added. DC directs officials to expedite crop survey, promote schemes for farmers
Mandya: Deputy commissioner Kumara has directed agriculture department officials to accelerate and ensure accuracy in the ongoing crop survey. He said that crucial estimates for agricultural and horticultural crop areas, disaster compensation under the NDRF, and crop loss reports are all based on this data. Speaking at a review meeting on Tuesday, Kumara instructed that Private Residents (PRs) who have not met crop survey targets be replaced with efficient personnel. He noted encouraging progress in the 2024–25 crop survey cycle, with area coverage reaching 91.5% for the pre-monsoon season, 96.4% in monsoon, 97.7% post-monsoon, and 95.8% for summer crops. Highlighting the achievements under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), he said Rs 39.09 crore in compensation was disbursed to farmers during the 2023-24 season. For the current year, 3,708 farmers have already submitted applications, and he urged officials to launch awareness drives to expand enrolment. To spread awareness about crop insurance, jingles are being played through Raitha Sanjeevini vehicles, autorickshaws, garbage collection vans, and at KSRTC bus stands.
