Pooram row: Kerala government awaits crime branch report to take a call on Ajith Kumar

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After State Police Chief Shaik Darvesh Saheb filed his report on former Law and Order ADGP M R Ajith Kumar's alleged lapses during the 2024 Thrissur Pooram, all eyes are now on the outcome of the crime branch investigation on the conspiracy behind the Pooram fiasco.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had announced a three-tier probe -- one by Shaik, one by the crime branch headed by ADGP H Venkatesh and another by DGP Manoj Abraham -- after the high-level team headed by Shaik had reported lapses from the part of Ajith in Pooram handling.
Manoj, who probed the lapses of officials from various departments fielded for Pooram duty, had earlier filed a report with the government.
The crime branch investigation, sources said, is nearing completion and a report is expected soon. The State Police Chief's report filed with the government on Monday reportedly carried critical remarks on Ajith acknowledging lapses from him.
Despite being in Thrissur, he did not attend the calls of minister K Rajan when the pooram was disrupted. The officer was not present during the night when the untoward incidents unfurled and the report mentioned that the officer did not perform his responsibility. The state government, it's been learnt, will decide on further course of action against Ajith only after perusing the crime branch report.
The UDF has been pushing the allegation that the Pooram was sabotaged to give electoral mileage to NDA Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency candidate Suresh Gopi.
That the fiasco occurred only days prior to the Lok Sabha poll and Suresh's comfortable win lend further weight to the allegation.
Ajith, who was in Thrissur when the unsavoury episode unravelled, was accused of turning a blind eye to the incident.

In Tamil Nadu, a temple guard's death after police questioning snowballs into political row, demands for Stalin's resignation

The death of a 27-year-old temple security guard following police questioning in Tamil Nadu's Sivaganga district has triggered a political row, with opposition leaders demanding a judicial inquiry, the arrest of police personnel, and the resignation of Chief Minister M K Stalin. B Ajith Kumar, who worked as a temporary guard at the Madapuram Badrakaliamman Temple near Tiruppuvanam, was picked up on Saturday by a special police team investigating a complaint of gold jewellery theft. The complaint had been filed by a devotee from Madurai, who alleged that 9.5 sovereigns of gold kept in her car went missing during her visit to the temple. Ajith, who briefly had access to the car key since he was helping her with parking, was questioned and released, but later detained again for further questioning. During the second round of questioning, Ajith reportedly complained of discomfort. Police took him to a hospital, where he was declared 'brought dead'. His family has alleged that he was tortured in custody. His younger brother, B Naveenkumar, claimed both of them were tied up and beaten during transport in a police vehicle. The incident prompted the immediate suspension of six police personnel attached to the Manamadurai sub-division. Superintendent of Police Ashish Rawat announced the suspensions on Sunday and promised a fair inquiry. Meanwhile, R Venkadesh Prasanth, the District Munsif-cum-Judicial Magistrate of Tiruppuvanam, has begun an inquest into the death. Police officials said a case has been registered under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. As news of the death spread, residents of Madapuram, along with AIADMK workers led by local MLA Senthilnathan, staged a road blockade demanding justice and that Ajith's family be allowed to travel in a government vehicle to retrieve the body. Tensions subsided only after district officials arranged for government transportation and assured compensation. AIADMK general secretary and Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami demanded a judicial magistrate-led probe and compensation for Ajith's family. 'Even if police suspect someone of a crime, they must follow due legal process. Custodial torture is unacceptable,' he said in a statement, accusing the DMK government of failing to rein in police excesses. BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran echoed similar concerns, alleging that Ajith was 'beaten over two days by seven policemen'. He referred to an earlier incident in which women, including a pregnant complainant, were allegedly assaulted at a police station. 'This points to a disturbing pattern of police brutality. The DMK government has failed to make police stations safe for the poor and the marginalised,' he said. PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss took direct aim at Chief Minister Stalin, citing 28 alleged custodial deaths in the past four years under the DMK regime. 'As opposition leader, Stalin had demanded the resignation of then-CM Palaniswami during the Sathankulam custodial deaths. If he has a conscience, he should now step down himself,' he said. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) demanded the arrest of all officers involved, calling the death a 'custodial murder'. NTK leader Seeman said suspensions were insufficient and demanded that a murder case be registered. DMDK's Premalatha Vijayakant called for systemic reforms to prevent further such deaths.

Ravada A. Chandrasekhar is new Kerala State Police Chief

The Kerala Cabinet, which met virtually on Monday (June 30, 2025) under the chairmanship of Chief Minster Pinarayi Vijayan, decided to appoint Director General of Police (DGP) Ravada A. Chandrasekhar as the new State Police Chief (SPC). The decision ends weeks of speculation over the successor to incumbent SPC Shaik Darvesh Saheb, who retires today (June 30). #Kerala#DGP Sheikh Darvesh Sahib during his farewell parade at SAP ground in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday 📸 @ — The Hindu - Kerala (@THKerala) June 30, 2025 A 1991-batch officer of the Kerala cadre, Mr. Chandrasekhar currently serves as the Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau. He has been asked to return to Kerala from New Delhi to assume charge at the earliest. In the interim, sources indicate that a senior officer may temporarily head the force until his arrival. Key posts Mr. Chandrasekhar, a native of West Godavari in Andhra Pradesh, began his career in Kerala as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Thalassery. Over the years, he has held key posts, including Deputy Inspector General of Thrissur and Kochi Ranges, and the Commissioner of Police, Thiruvananthapuram City. He also served a stint with the United Nations on deputation, before his repatriation to the post of Inspector General, State Crime Records Bureau. Koothuparamba incident The CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) apparently chose to disregard the potential fallout of appointing Mr. Chandrasekhar, whose involvement in the Koothuparamba firing incident of November 25, 1994, as the then ASP, had made him an adversary of CPI(M) workers. Despite being implicated in the case, the officer and others had been acquitted by the Kerala High Court in 2012. Five Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) workers were killed, and six others were injured after the police opened fire on a protest against the then United Democratic Front (UDF) government's educational policy. Mr. Chandrasekhar, who was second in the shortlist recommended by the Union Public Service Commission, pipped DGPs Nitin Agrawal and Yogesh Gupta to the top post. The State government also reportedly considered DGP Manoj Abraham and Additional DGP M.R. Ajith Kumar, who faced criticism over the Thrissur Pooram fiasco, for the role.

Tamil Nadu Guard Dies Allegedly In Police Custody, Opposition Demands Probe

Chennai: A 28-year-old security guard of a temple in Sivaganga district allegedly died when he was being questioned by police in connection with a theft case, and the main opposition AIADMK has demanded a comprehensive probe and legal action against those responsible for his death. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami strongly condemned what he called "the doll chief minister" and alleged Mr Stalin could not even administer the police department that is under his direct control. In order to facilitate a comprehensive investigation, to bring out the whole truth, a committee headed by the district judge should be set up, and action must be taken against those responsible. Also, due compensation must be extended to the kin of the deceased, Mr Palaniswami said in a statement. CPI(M), an ally of the ruling DMK, demanded the dismissal of police personnel responsible and strongly condemned the death. A murder case must be registered, and the policemen who perpetrated the crime must be brought to book. The Marxist party also demanded a government job for a family member of the deceased and due compensation. Tamil Nadu BJP alleged that the DMK government has been transforming Tamil Nadu into "the motherland of lockup deaths," and that 24 custodial deaths have happened under the DMK regime. Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary TTV Dhinakaran hit out at Chief Minister Stalin, alleging he had shed "fake tears" over custodial deaths after watching films on that subject. Now, what answer is he going to give for police violence under his rule against the common people, Dhinakaran asked. PMK top leader Anbumani Ramadoss alleged 28 custodial deaths in the past 4 years during the DMK regime and said there could be no worse violation of human rights. When custodial deaths happened at Sathankulam during the AIADMK regime, Mr Stalin had demanded the resignation of then Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami. If the chief minister has a conscience, he should quit his post, Anbumani said. Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi chief Panruti T Velmurugan, an ally of the ruling DMK, said a murder case should be registered against the police personnel responsible for it, and action must be taken to legally secure appropriate punishment for them. Allegedly, 28-year-old Ajith Kumar, who worked as a security guard in a temple in Sivaganga district, died while he was in custody at the Tirubuvanam police station on June 28. He was taken to the police station as part of a probe over the disappearance of gold and some cash from inside the car of a devotee. Reportedly, the devotee had requested Ajith to park the vehicle, and since he did not know driving, he had requested another person to park the vehicle. Six police personnel have been suspended in this connection. According to the CPI(M), Ajith worked as a temporary guard.
