Fadnavis Greenlights Massive Recruitment in Public Univs, 100% Hiring in Govt-Aided Engineering Colleges
The move is expected to significantly boost the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) and enhance the overall quality of higher education in the state.
Chairing a high-level review meeting at the state legislature on Monday, Fadnavis directed that all sanctioned faculty and staff positions in non-agricultural public universities be filled immediately. He also approved the recruitment of 5,012 assistant professors in unaided grant-in-aid colleges under the directorate of higher education.
Additionally, he sanctioned 788 teaching and 2,242 non-teaching posts across public universities. The newly established Laxminarayan Innovation Technological University (LITU) has been allotted 105 faculty positions and one equivalent teaching post. An allocation of ₹8 crore has also been approved for the university's administrative and daily operations, on par with other universities.
"The recruitment process will directly impact the quality of higher education and must be expedited without delay," Fadnavis emphasized.
He also announced full-scale recruitment in all government-aided engineering colleges, including VJTI Mumbai and Guru Gobindsingh Engineering College, Nanded.
A revised staffing plan for 603 posts at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University (BATU) was also approved. "The number of technological universities in Maharashtra is low, and we must run them at full capacity to offer more opportunities and improve standards," Fadnavis said.
In a boost to public libraries, the CM approved a 40% hike in library grants and instructed that the proposal be sent to the finance department without delay. Libraries completing 50, 75, or 100 years of service will now be eligible for special incentive grants. Fadnavis also directed the officials to consider recognizing new libraries in place of the 1,706 whose approvals were recently withdrawn.
He further proposed the establishment of a dedicated Department of Science and Technology in Maharashtra.
"With increasing technological integration across sectors, we need to study working models in other states and draft a framework for setting up such a department here," he said.
The review meeting was attended by higher and technical education minister Chandrakant Patil, additional chief secretaries Venugopal Reddy (Higher education), OP Gupta (Finance), Rajgopal Deora (Planning), Saurabh (unnamed department), LITU vice-chancellor Dr Atul Vaidya, higher education director Shailendra Deolankar, and technical education director Vinod Mohitkar, among others.

Carnac bridge renamed after Operation Sindoor, to be reopened tomorrow
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to reopen the new Carnac bridge on Thursday after rechristening it as 'Sindoor bridge', in honour of Operation Sindoor — the military operation launched against terror sites in Pakistan. A senior BMC official told The Indian Express Tuesday that the proposal to rename the bridge was put forth by Maharashtra Speaker Rahul Narvekar. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is set to inaugurate the bridge at 10 am on Thursday and the inauguration ceremony will also be attended by Deputy CMs Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, and Narvekar. A key east-west connector linking Masjid in south Mumbai with P D Mello Road, the 154-year-old bridge was razed in a four-day operation in 2022, after a structural audit deemed it unfit for use. It was following this that the BMC, along with the railways, launched the reconstruction of the British-era bridge at a cost of over Rs 60 crore over a period of three years. While the civic body had completed works on the bridge and load testing by June 13, its opening had been delayed owing to the procurement of a No-Objection Certificate from Central Railway as well as final touches such as installation of signages. The delayed opening had also become the grounds for the joint protest launched by the Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS on July 2. 'The bridge has been renamed after Operation Sindoor. On Tuesday, we received the letter from Rahul Narwekar suggesting the new name, following which the name was finalised,' the official said. A direct response to the terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, Operation Sindoor was launched between May 6 and 7 by India against terrorist infrastructure at nine locations in Pakistan. Built in 1868, Carnac bridge is one of the oldest bridges of the city and is named after Sir James Rivett-Carnac, who served as Governor of Bombay from 1839 to 1841. The new Sindoor bridge has a total length of 328 metres, of which nearly 70 metres within the railway jurisdiction. While the old bridge catered to two-lane traffic, the new bridge will consist of four vehicular lanes, facilitating twice the vehicular flow and smoother movement. Once opened for vehicular movement, the connector will ease traffic along the Yusuf Mehrally road, Mohammad Ali road, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel road among others.

Delhi govt sanctions Rs 900 crore to install smart classrooms and blackboards
The Delhi Cabinet on Tuesday approved over Rs 900 crore to install 2,446 smart blackboards across 75 CM Shri Schools and set up 18,966 additional smart classrooms for students of classes 9 to 12. With this, the number of smart classrooms is set to increase to 21,412 by 2029-30, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 recommendations, Education Minister Ashish Sood said. Tender for the same have already been invited, he added. In a dig at the previous AAP regime, Sood said, 'You will be surprised to know that Delhi has 37,778 classrooms in government schools, yet between 2014 and 2024, only 799 of these were equipped with smart blackboards, and even those came through CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) donations, not government funding…' He added that this was the first major step in the BJP government's mission to make Delhi's government schools better than private schools. During the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta approved Rs 33 crore for the District Project Fund, while Rs 20 crore was allotted for the Integrated District Project Fund. The funds will be utilised for all the 11 administrative districts of Delhi, with every district receiving Rs 3 crore for local projects. According to the CM, the funds will help support projects on infrastructure, community amenities, and social welfare. These projects will include repairs in schools dispensaries, public toilets, and parks; maintenance of cow shelters, installation of street lights and CCTV cameras; upkeep of drains, pond rejuvenation, and flood control works. 'Implementation of these projects will be carried out through departments like PWD, Irrigation and Flood Control, MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi), among others,' Gupta added.

Maharashtra Sets Sail For Maritime Jobs: Rs 120 Cr Foreign Investment To Train 7,000 Youths Annually
Last Updated: Chief minister Fadnavis said this landmark collaboration will help Maharashtra build a global identity in port sector skill development Maharashtra has taken a major step towards creating thousands of new jobs in the maritime and logistics sectors by signing a significant memorandum of understanding (MoU) worth Rs 120 crore with foreign partners. The MoU brings together the skill development department, ports department, Atal Solutions, International BV Netherlands, and MD Rural Group to modernise six Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in Mumbai, Pune, Baramati, Sindhudurg, Nagpur, and Nashik. With participation from international credit agencies from the Netherlands, Denmark, and Poland, the project aims to provide world-class training to 5,000 to 7,000 youths every year, preparing them for emerging opportunities in the port and logistics industry. The signing took place in the chief minister's chamber at Mumbai Vidhan Bhavan, in the presence of CM Devendra Fadnavis, his deputies Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, ports minister Nitesh Rane, and skill development minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha. Chief minister Fadnavis said this landmark collaboration will help Maharashtra build a global identity in port sector skill development. 'Projects like Vadhavan Port will generate large-scale jobs. This partnership will ensure our youth are equipped with the skills needed for the maritime industry of the future," he said. Under this initiative, selected ITIs will be upgraded with modern simulation labs, international curricula, maritime transport courses, and training by global experts. The goal is to build India's first export-ready vocational training model, ensuring that Maharashtra's workforce is not only ready for local projects like JNPT and Vadhavan but can also compete globally. The €12 million (~Rs 120 crore) investment will be managed through an ECA-based financing model, with risk insurance to cover political and financial uncertainties. The project will be implemented by the Rural Enhancer Group, with support from JNPT and the Maharashtra Maritime Board. Officials believe this model will set an example for other states to follow, giving Maharashtra's youth access to high-quality skill development and steady employment in one of the world's fastest-growing sectors.
