Pete Alonso crushes two homers, Griffin Canning twirls six strong innings in Mets' 6-1 win over Dodgers

The Mets' offense generated plenty of traffic against Tony Gonsolin and the Dodgers bullpen over the next few innings, but they weren't able to come up with the big hit needed until Alonso struck again in the eighth -- crushing a monstrous 447-foot three-run homer to deep right field.
The big man is now tied with Seiya Suzuki for the NL lead with 53 RBI on the season. He's also tied with Darryl Strawberry for the most multi-homer games in franchise history (22) and is just two long balls behind David Wright for the second-most in franchise history (241).
- On the mound, Griffin Canning delivered a much-needed bounce back outing. The right-hander was magnificent as he limited the high-powered Dodgers lineup to just three hits and a walk while striking out seven across six scoreless innings of work.
Canning's best frame of the night was the bottom of the fifth inning, when he worked around a one out Dalton Rushing single by punching out both Kiké Hernández and Shohei Ohtani -- the latter of which was on a nasty painted 3-2 changeup.

After his best showing of the season, the California-native is now down to an impressive 2.90 ERA.
- José Castillo had to work around a bit of a scare before the Mets tacked on their insurance in the eighth. The left-hander allowed a single and a hit-by-pitch, but bounced back to strike out the next two batters with the tying run at the plate and the top of the order looming.
Castillo returned for a easy bottom of the eighth, giving him 6.0 scoreless innings since joining the Mets.
- Los Angeles was able to break up the shutout with a solo shot off the bat of Andy Pages in the bottom of the ninth. It was the first home run Ryne Stanek allowed this season -- but it was no harm no foul, as he quickly put the finishing touches on this one to secure the win and clinch the season series.

- Juan Soto saw his five-game hitting and extra-base streak come to an end, but the star outfielder continues showing signs that's he's rounding back into form -- breaking out the Soto Shuffle at times as he drew three walks across four plate appearances.
- Brandon Nimmo enjoyed another strong showing back in the two-spot against the righty -- picking up another hit and scoring two runs. He's now reached base in eight of his last nine appearances and has scored six runs over that span.
- Jeff McNeil pushed his hitting streak to six with a one out single in the second.
- Ronny Mauricio is still looking for his first big-league knock this season. The 24-year-old was back in the lineup batting seventh and playing third base, but he was held hitless and struck out twice across four at-bats.

What to do? Dive in and enjoy it: Saffie Joseph is bringing White Abarrio and Skippylongstocking back, Steve Asmussen has entered Disarm. The Whitney bench of talent is unquestionably deep, so that there are multiple ways for whatever Todd Pletcher (Fierceness) and Chad Brown (Sierra Leone) have in mind to be wrecked as their athletes go head to head against each other. But before we get into what Irad Ortiz Jr. can do aboard White Abarrio to ruin Todd Pletcher's and Chad Brown's day, here's the refresher on the field. Sierra Leone rather snatched the lion's share of the $7-million purse last time out. There are as many who would favor Sierra Leone to bring another majestic close, but neither horse has had the best 2025 thus far, and that has led to some doubts in the oddsmaking hivemind, namely, right in front of us in the morning line. The (decisive) Breeders' Cup Classic victor has been seated on the second-favorite rung, at 2-1, while at 9-5 Fierceness, who has had a narrowly better 2025, has been touted the race favorite. It's rare for a Breeders' Cup Classic winner to be slotted second to anybody, but them's the breaks, and that's the reality of the view of Sierra Leone's current mental and physical fitness. In the take-no-prisoners view of the NYRA oddsmakers, the gap between the two horses grows more clear when we look at the morning line's implied probabilities. At 9-5, Fierceness comes into race day with a 37.5% implied probability of winning the race. Sierra Leone's flat 2-1 odds mean that he carries a 33.3% chance of winning, or 4.2% less than Fierceness. At this stratospheric level of equine talent, that 4.2 percentage point difference is a big gap. As ever, the running of the 98th Whitney will bear out the numbers or it won't. Their top-favorite status noted, there's still quite a laundry list of things to do for John Velasquez and Fierceness to beat off any sort of huge Sierra Leone close, whenever he brings it. One way to put this is to reduce their many complex tasks to two words: fuel management. They can ill afford too much pace, and they certainly don't want to get drawn into skirmishes up the backstretch with the likes of White Abarrio, who will be gunning for them. Similarly, one way to reduce Sierra Leone's and Flavien Prat's work to a phrase would be to say: They have a furlong less in which to get it done today. And as he does for Fierceness, White Abarrio looms as an especially distracting nightmare alongside Highland Falls and Skippylongstocking. These three have the moxie not just to distract but to occupy the full attention of the two favorites. In their thriller of a finish in the Classic, Sierra Leone and Flavien Prat didn't have just a little more the tank at Del Mar last November 2, they had a lot. As a result, the victor looked like he was out for a breeze as he overtook Fierceness and put a length-and-a-half between himself and the place horse by the time they got to the wire. But back then, Prat and Sierra Leone had that one downright luxurious extra furlong with which to play than they have this afternoon.

Dodgers 2-way star Shohei Ohtani to start on mound Wednesday. Team goes to 6-man rotation
BOSTON (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani is expected to start on the mound Wednesday as he continues his buildup from elbow surgery that kept him from pitching all last season. Manager Dave Roberts said Sunday before the Dodgers faced the Boston Red Sox in the finale of their three-game series that the plan is for Ohtani to work four innings at Cincinnati, with an off day to recover before hitting in a game. With the Japanese superstar working his way back along with left-hander Blake Snell, who pitched 4 2/3 innings on Saturday in his fourth rehab start for Triple-A Oklahoma City, the Dodgers will be using a six-man rotation. They currently have Clayton Kershaw, Tyler Glasnow, Dustin May, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Emmet Sheehan in the rotation. 'Shohei is going to go on Wednesday and then he'll probably pitch the following Wednesday, so that probably lends itself to the six-man,' Roberts said. In Ohtani's last start, he allowed one run and four hits in three innings against Minnesota on July 22. He struck out three and walked one, throwing 46 pitches, 30 for strikes. Roberts feels like this season is sort of a rehab year in the big leagues and doesn't foresee the team extending Ohtani's workload deep into games for a while. 'I think this whole year on the pitching side is sort of rehab, maintenance,' he said. 'We're not going to have the reins off where we're going to say: 'Hey you can go 110 pitches.' I don't see that happening for quite some time. I think that staying at four (innings) for a bit, then build up to five and we'll see where we can go from there.' Also Sunday, the club activated right-handed reliever Blake Treinen from the injured list and recalled left-hander Justin Wrobleski. The 37-year-old Treinen was a big part of last season's run to the World Series title, picking up two victories in the Series against the New York Yankees. He has been sidelined since April 19 because of forearm tightness. 'I think the only thing I'm going to be mindful of is the up-down,' Roberts said on Treinen's usage. 'To come into an inning of leverage, I have no problem.' Wrobleski, 25, is with the Dodgers for the fourth time this season. He's a starter now, but Roberts said he'll work out of the bullpen. 'Just trying to get a quality arm, get some length, potentially using him in two-inning stints, three-inning stints is going to be helpful for our 'pen," Roberts said. 'The goal is to get the best pitchers on your roster in whatever role.'
